Another Murakami which puzzled me and yet kept me engrossed in a weird little tale of a man with an ear fetish and his girlfriend with a magical ear traversing the mountains in Japan to look for a sheep with a star on its back that may or may not be controlling the world & a friend named the Rat, on the bidding of a right-wing political giant‘s secretary. It was a strange ride alright, but the vibes were pretty good

A Wild Sheep Chase was my first Murakami listen. I had read Kafka On The Shore before and found that listening to Murakami was significantly better.

This book was quite hilarious. Some parts were a little ramble-y, as is Murakami‘s style. But overall, this book was very funny and entertaining.

The narrator, David, has done a fine job and brings the protagonist to life in all his disenchanted stupor. 😄

Finished my last Murakami for #AuthoraMonth with 40 minutes of March to go. Have to say I left the best to last, I really enjoyed the book, but I wonder what Murakami was smoking when he wrote this one 😂 Quite surreal in places, but held my attention throughout. Some big surprises towards the end of the book. I certainly would recommend this one to others, but do suspend a bit of disbelief. Glad I persevered with him this month, this was my 7th!

Eloquent prose! This is the third in a series (Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball 1973) about the unnamed protagonist, his friend “Rat”, the bartender pal “J”, and the oddly named women who waltz in and out of the MC‘s life. Next in the series is Dance, Dance, Dance, which I hope to read soon. 4.4 🌟. Would have been 5 except for certain comments made in reference to female bodies

Eh. I need to stop giving Murakami more chances. Same as I‘ve said before, fascinating complex magic realism happening to a pervy divorced guy as usual with a younger manic pixie dream girl girlfriend as usual, with a pile of random extra sexism thrown in like staring at the ‘large breasted receptionist‘ over the road. A big yikes.

Cathythoughts I read my first Murakami this year .... Killing Commendatore.. and really liked it ! Then I went on to Wind Up Bird ... & yes , very very similar themes. I think one was enough for me .... I‘m not inclined to read anymore... I really did enjoy that first one though & glad to have read him 5y
Emilymdxn @Cathythoughts I felt the same at first, I loved Norwegian Wood and liked 1Q84, then the more I read the more I noticed the creepy elements and the more it all blended together. Every single book is so similar and contains the same pervy stuff, I wish I‘d just read those first two and kept the good memory of them. 5y

A Wild Sheep Chase is my first Murakami! The synopsis cannot do it justice, but an ad executive in 1978 uses a postcard image of sheep in an ad and suddenly finds himself (and his psychic ear-modeling girlfriend) on a literal wild sheep chase under pressure from a powerful right wing boss. This book runs on dream logic, but it‘s more vivid, strange, & real than any dream I‘ve ever had. I feel kind of hypnotized! What Murakami would you recommend?

DrexEdit I loved The Wind-up Bird Chronicle and the chunker 1Q84. 5y
Billypar Wind-Up is my favorite, but I would also recommend the follow-up to Wild Sheep Chase, Dance Dance Dance. I liked it even more than WSC, but it's in the same vein, another dark and bizarre mystery. 5y

This is my second Murakami and I am now hooked. The narrator and his girlfriend with perfectly formed ears are forced by a head of the Japanese far right to search for a mysterious sheep spirit , a journey which will lead to the mountains of Hokkaido, an abandoned farm, an encounter with an old friend and the sheepman. I take it as a metaphor for Japan‘s history and its experience with right wing politics. But then again I may be completely wrong.

zezeki This is the first Murakami I read, and I absolutely loved it. Been meaning to reread it for ages. 6y

This one was a little harder to get through. That said, the last quarter of the book was great. This #Murakami finishes clean rounds off the story so well. I felt fulfilled after the last page.

I knew then and there right after reaching almost the end part of the book, I got to give it a 5 ⭐. Well every singe book written by Haruki Murakami deserves all the stars. Started out with an unnamed character embarked on a journey that would set to change his whole life ahead if he failed to do the task as the chosen individual. So the story went by so as the Man's adventure searching for a sheep with a star on the back. It was a great read. 👌

An excellent work of art that gives the reader an atmospheric and dreamlike world to explore. Every page seems like you are reading straight out of the author‘s mind, making it seem like a highly personal journey through Murakami‘s imagination and view on life. It‘s a very fun read, but not for everyone. The author allows the reader to interpret the meaning behind a lot of the strange occurrences in the book. Highly recommend if you like Murakami.

An early Murakami which I had not read... It has all the elements: a passive male narrator, quirky girlfriend and a mysterious stranger who persuades him to go on a quest. Not my favourite of his works but i love how the protagonist is so normal ('mediocre' he says), cooking, reading & listening to music; it's like spending time w a laid-back friend, as the story becomes psychedelic, with otherworldly Hokkaido setting & a talking 'Sheep Man'.

There were sheep. And the metaphysical. Shady characters, bizarre conversations, and spot on observations. But overall, there was Murakami's always elegant, fluent, witty, tasty, succulent prose.

And even though I can't be sure I even understood it all, I definitely recommend it.

OhNoMersault Where would you recommend trying to restart with Murakami? I've read Kafka and Wind-Up Bird to mixed results. I tried to listen to IQ84 but definitely don't think audio is the solution. I refuse to believe that I'm incapable of enjoying his writing. (edited) 8y
cathysaid @OhNoMersault I definitely have to be in the "mood" to read Murakami in order to enjoy it. Tried 1Q84 several times before I suddenly liked it. Norwegian Wood is pretty good. And Wind/Pinball might be a good place to start. As for audio, I don't think I could follow a Murakami plot that way! 8y
