‘A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed.‘
I‘ve only seen the American version of The Ring. This is slightly different. Not as scary, but does have some creepy moments and an interesting storyline.
Book 1 in Ring series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The first thing to know about Ring the book is that it's really not at all like either the Japanese or US movie versions. The second thing to know is that it's not really scary (but it is weird and a little creepy). It's decently enjoyable, the relationship between the two main characters is well done, and it's an interesting 1990, pre-Internet take on viral media, but there are a couple of twists where I'm just, like...why?
Ear scritches and reading time: Silo is perhaps even happier than I am that I have a rare Saturday off from work.
When the US version of The Ring came out in 2002, I was obsessed! It‘s a movie I‘ve watched repeatedly over the years. I‘m surprised it took me so long to read the book! Really loved the original story and characters. It was a pretty easy read, and the last 1/4 of the book was bone chilling. The two main characters Asakawa and Ryuji are interesting… I found Asakawa more likable overall. Would love to read the rest of the trilogy.
I got an Amazon gift card for my birthday in July and decided to buy The Ring Trilogy by Koji Suzuki. I don‘t know if I‘m going to like it or not. I hope it‘s good. I want to read it because it sounds interesting. This trilogy inspired the movie The Ring. I‘ve never seen The Ring. If I like the books then I can watch the movie after. If not then I can watch the movie anyway.

As I don't subscribe to any streaming service but still watch only classic, old-fashioned TV (that's bad enough, it steals more than enough time) I don't know about all the Netflix etc. series based on books.
There are many interesting ones out there, for sure, but then I've got better things to do with my life than watch TV.

This is the book that started the films. It's a little different from the movie. A journalist and his eccentric friend investigate the death of four teenagers, who appear to have died after a watching a videotape. The plot and creepiness develop from there. At times the translation seems repetitive, using the exact same phrasing, but otherwise the book is a good pick.
A row of condominium buildings, each fourteen stories high, ran along the northern edge of the housing development next to the Sankeien garden.

An understated beginning for a novel and film that brought such terrifying images.
My next read. I haven‘t read anything by Koji Suzuki before, but so far it‘s very interesting.
Pick! Set in 1989, a reporter finds some related deaths including his wife‘s niece and starts investigating with his friend. Videotape located and creepiness ensues. I did not think that this was as scary as the American or Japanese movie versions which stand up today, but the original story is very good, and original. If you enjoyed either Ringu or The Ring, you should enjoy this.
First time read for me, I loved the movie so I hope that I enjoy the book! Best read in daylight hours 🤣
This is definately dated by how attitudes towards women/sex and tech are displayed and it honestly wasn't scary, but I liked it. It's basically Asakawa traveling to beautiful places and researching in the digging through physical files and going to the library kind of way. I already have the 2nd book and I'm pretty curious to see how they break or if they do break the curse later on. Also heard this series gets weirdly scifi, so wanna see that.
I absolutely loved this book, and I am so happy to know there are so many others. 😁 nice and spooky read.
Did you know that the horror movie The Ring is based on a book, and that book is actually the first in a trilogy? It turns goes pretty zanily scifi by the end!
The books are called Ring (リング), Spiral (らせん), and Loop (ループ) and are by Suzuki Koji, who also wrote Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から). All are available in English!

Apparently these are some of the books that will scare the #hell out of you! I don‘t know and have no intention to find out. (Scaredy 🐱 🙈).

Round 14 of our #tenatatime #tbr project. That‘s 140 books knocked off my piles since I started. @Kosugi and I have really enjoyed this method of deciding what to read next. Now I just have to decide which one to read first!

I should be working, but I can‘t stop read Ring. I don‘t know what it is about Japanese horror and mystery that I enjoy so much. This book is definitely different than the American movie. Haha I kind of want to order the trilogy now..
Wow, I definitely didn't remember the plot from those movies. Way less scary than I expected, probably because you don't actually watch the movie and also there's no creepy kid climbing out of a well. More like investigative journalism...Still disturbing. Frequent toddler interruptions likely broke the suspense. And what the heck is up with ryuji?! #mommyreads #horror #japan #ripxii #littensdressedinblood #librarybooks
Me today: oh my gahh i have so much to do and no time to do it!! whoa the toddler is asleep, let's have another cup of coffee and read a chapter. Or two. They're totally short.
Also he just got the Japanese bus and bus book and is in his bus happy place 😂

Amazing!! Couldn‘t put it down. A little different from the movie but in a great way. Gets really in depth with the hows and why sadako is a ghost/demon and how she came that way. Goes into better depth about the mother as well!
I loved both the Japanese and American films, and I was worried how that might effect the books for me. Even knowing what happens this book still sucked me in completely. I can't wait to read the others.
Today I learned that the author of the Ring Trilogy, Koji Suzuki, is a respected authority on childrearing. Hmmmmmmm
#readjanuary #day28 #booksbyasianwriters Just a few of my books with Asian authors, there's a few different nationalities represented here, Japanese, Chinese & a few AsianAmerican. Tess Gerritsen is one of my favourite crime writers, ring is classic horror, Three Dark Crowns is one of my 2016 picks & the Amy Tan & Zen Cho are on my tbr.
#AllHallowsRead #scarybooksintranslation Asakawa, connects the death of his niece to the deaths of three other high school students. During his investigation, he discovers a videotape with a terrible warning: "Those who view these images are fated to die at this exact moment one week from now." ???
I've been reading along with the Overdue podcast all month for their Spooktober. About to start the last book of the month.
This morning's book and breakfast combo...

I read this in one sitting! Very creepy and compelling. Worth reading if you've seen the films or not.
A relatively inventive (for the time) psychological thriller that is occasionally bogged down by clumsy writing, poorly flushed-out characters, and overly-mundane descriptions. However, the good, for the most part, greatly outweighs the bad, and heavily recovers from some fantastic tension and situations that are almost surrealistic in nature. Overall a decent read.
" What do I care if Ryuji ends up dead? Someone who says he wants to watch the extinction of mankind doesn't deserve to live a long life."
About a quarter of the way through, having just finished parts one and two, and I'm already sufficiently creeped out 💩
