Following Tyrion Lannister's famous summary of himself, "That's what I do, I drink, and I know things."

That quote never gets old. ?

Naomi had a settling in session at nursery so obviously I popped into the cafe over the road and started a new book 💛

The blurb describes this as “mystery horror,“ and I don't think it's a spoiler to say that it struck me as more one than the other. The writing often feels stilted and overly simplistic, but it's difficult to know if that's how the author writes or how the translator translates. I do really enjoy the premise, and it's a quick read with some fun puzzle-solving elements, although it reads to me more like a sketch of an idea than a novel. #BuddyRead

ImperfectCJ I finished the book last night, and I'm a little underwhelmed. I think the description of the book as "mystery horror" threw me off. It doesn't seem like horror really to me. And after reading Butter, I can't help seeing the plot as at least a little misogynistic. I agree with the comment earlier wondering if there was something off with the translation, although I do like the sentence that describes rocks the size of rabbits on the trail. 13h
julesG @ImperfectCJ misogyny unfortunately seems to still be part of Japanese culture. Maybe the descriptions of the murders is considered horror? I'd just call it a mystery. 8h

I just started this very weird Japanese mystery. So many layers and clues and I feel like everything is important while I have no idea why! Fun!
You can still join our #buddyread. @julesG has been posting about each of the four chapters.

julesG Everything seems to be a clue, but you need to continue for it to make sense. When you read the next chapter, you see the puzzle pieces slotting together, but still there's no final picture to admire. 17h

Lots of books read since my last Litsy post!!
I‘ve been off the internet for a few months…
I‘ve loved the Japanese crime genre, Conclave by Robert Harris which I read just before the recent Conclave. Brooklyn, Long Island and The Safe Keep were also favourites!

BarbaraBB Good you‘re back! And I live this author but haven‘t heard of this title! Stacking! 19h
CarolynM Hi Sally 👋 Always good to see you. I just read and loved this one by Robert Harris 17h

This series is comforting to me, even though my emotions run the spectrum! Very thought provoking…would you go back to the past or into the future if you could?

Yes, I've just finished the third chapter. It's a very compelling read. Also, it's hot outside and I am hiding inside with cool drinks and books.

julesG It's turned into a murder mystery. I had some ideas at the beginning of the chapter - who/how/why, but thought them too far fetched. At the end of the chapter I was astonished that I only got the why wrong. 😳 2d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag We have opposite weather at the moment - super chilly in Melbourne (I prefer this to summer) 2d
julesG @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'm definitely not a summer person. I'd rather keep warm than be (too) warm 1d
