Tale of Genji | Murasaki Shikibu

Today I finished an audio reread of The Tale of Genji. I did not listen nearly as carefully as I read the first time a few years ago, but I found it interesting how some scenes were so familiar from the previous read. It is still a beautifully written but infuriating story.

I just loved this. So many beautiful lessons, a bit of found family, lots of lovely sounding food. I kept picturing the gorgeous cherry trees in my head. Thanks to @Soubhiville for reminding me I had this on Kindle - plus it fits for #TBRtarot, so yay!

There‘s a little coffee shop where the patrons can sit & come to terms w/ huge changes in their lives like loss or a first love.

This was sweet, but I went into it expecting a little more. There are only three parts, & I did appreciate the open ended qualities of each, but I wish each had had a little more time, & I definitely wish that the coffee shop itself had played a bigger role.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

The poignancy of this book snuck up on me. Ogawa did such a wonderful job of writing through the eyes of a child, capturing the way the world seems at that age. And using the snapshot nature of the story to portray the way that life is - you are immersed in powerful moments and then things continue on, and try as you might, you can‘t get back there. I loved this.

This gorgeous story gives us a glimpse into the lives of 3 people, each arrive after their deaths at a photo studio run by Hirasaka. They select a photo from each year of their lives to add to the lantern that will be their "life flashing before their eyes". We get to know a nursery teacher, a yakuza enforcer & a young abused girl. The ending was so satisfying it made my heart hurt & I'll be thinking about these characters for a long time.

This historical fiction novel is essential a narrative memoir of the author's grandmother who moved from Korea to Japan in the 1930s to pursue an education. But rampant racism and anti-Korean sentiment in Japan made her dreams of becoming a teacher and later a nurse incredibly difficult to achieve without sacrificing her ideals and identity. It was also my #bookspin for #bookspinbingo this month

tpixie Her second book I believe is going to be a continuation of this one so I‘m waiting for it to be published. I saw her in February in San Diego at Adventures By The Book Superbook event. She was a very lovely lady. ( unfortunately they are not going to have a super book event again this year.) 2w

I don't love a locked room mystery - it feels like they're so focused on the puzzle and being clever, that the characterization seems to suffer? All brain and no heart which is not my bag. So I mostly only read them when prompted by something like the #christmascrimechallenge 😅. After reading this one, my feelings haven't changed. It's more than competent, if not entirely satisfying. A begrudging pick @Ruthiella @RaeLovesToRead

Ruthiella I agree with you. I am often perplexed by the technicality of a closed room mystery. I prefer psychological mysteries with character-focus. But I am trying at least to read the most famous of them. 🎅🏻💀🎄🔪 3w
