A fascinating history which I know nothing. I had to watch the miniseries twice with captions in order not to confuse the characters. I decided to listen to the novel, and I am having the same trouble, but this time, I have a character map. The narrator has the best voice.

What intrigues me the most, that I think the adaptation misses, is the different definitions of bravery that the three different cultures have.

Informative. Disturbing. Sometimes funny. How do you describe this book? It sucks you in with a premise of a ridiculous “infomercial” for American Beef exports, and unwraps layers of things we don‘t like to think about. I don‘t eat factory-farmed meat but if I did before this book would have made me stop. Not preachy, but gets the message through loud and clear.

Melismatic This really was so so good! 2d

This really hit my sweet spot, a real mystery lovers mystery. I've had mixed luck with Japanese detective novels, I've always liked that they really go for intricate puzzle type mysteries but sometimes I have found that has been to the detriment of the characterisation. This was very strong on both. Probably best to go in as cold as possible and just let it unfold.

On #Holocaust Remembrance Day as well as the week that Lunar New Year begins, I am starting this very important book by Iris Chang which details the massacre of Nanking by Japanese forces during #WWII. Much less well-known than the genocide in Europe, but no less horrifying.

It feels really weird to have red this in the current social and political climate of today. Finishing this I could see a couple of different ways to interpret this book but I think what stands out to me is commentary of the disappearance of truth in regards to memory.
