Half Bad (Bound for Schools and Librarie)
Half Bad (Bound for Schools and Librarie) | Sally Green
"Highly entertaining and dangerously addictive"-- "Time "magazine "A bewitching new thriller." --" The Wall Street Journal" In modern-day England, witches live alongside humans: White witches, who are good; Black witches, who are evil; and sixteen-year-old Nathan, who is both. Nathan's father is the world's most powerful and cruel Black witch, and his mother is dead. He is hunted from all sides. Trapped in a cage, beaten and handcuffed, Nathan must escape before his seventeenth birthday, at which point he will receive three gifts from his father and come into his own as a witch--or else he will die. But how can Nathan find his father when his every action is tracked, when there is no one safe to trust--not even family, not even the girl he loves? In the tradition of Patrick Ness and Markus Zusak, "Half Bad" is a gripping tale of alienation and the indomitable will to survive, a story that will grab hold of you and not let go until the very last page.

Littens!!! I was tonight old—this very night old—when I realized that Green‘s Half Bad trilogy is now a Netflix show. Dark, intense from the opening chapters, & populated with complex, flawed, & interesting characters, I really liked all three books when I read them—it might just be time for a reread. My “watch list” doesn‘t yet rival my TBR stack(s) but it is definitely getting longer…and just in time for the cold weather which is perfect!

This very exciting news comes to us from Twitter.

I really liked this YA trilogy—it starts dark. I mean really, really dark and then…it goes places. The author made some really great, gutsy choices, never taking the easy road or easy out, throughout the story. Surprising and always interesting. Can‘t wait to see this on the small screen. 🤞

Soo I‘m currently reading Half Bad by Sally Green. The way is written is not the way I expected. I‘m not sure how I feel about it yet, at first I was really dissatisfied, but I‘m starting to like it more and more. The story is about a boy that is half white witch and half black witch.

Well well... It wasn't a bad book. I mean, I've liked the plot and the characters but I felt like nothing was happening in most of the book. Anyway, i liked the background behind Nathan's story and I am sure I will read the next book soon 🙊

This was a pleasant surprise. Nathan's father is a murdering Black Witch and his mom is a White Witch. He was forced to live in a cage because the council was not sure if he would be a Black Witch or a White Witch.

Starting a new physical copy today as part of the N.E.W.T. Readathon! I do have a copy of the English version on my kindle, so if I struggle too much reading in Dutch again I'm definitely switching. 😅😆😂 This paperback copy is so pretty though. I love the foiled details and the back with the white background is gorgeous! 😍

RadicalReader @yvo_about_books wonderful username what does it stand for? How do you know Dutch? 6y
yvo_about_books @RadicalReader I was actually born in Holland! Although I've been living in Argentina for years now, so my Dutch is pretty rusty. 😆 I'm trying to read at least one or two books in Dutch every year to try and keep up with the language, although I prefer reading in English. 6y
RadicalReader @yvo_about_books can you write and speak Dutch too or just read it? 6y

I LOVED this book.
Smooth and convincing world-building, great characterization, excellent storytelling — none of it flashy, all of it happening without a glitch.
Flashbacks feature prominently in the narrative, and this usually makes me hyper-aware of having to switch gears when the narrative does; not so here — past and present narrative blend seamlessly, and the story takes shape seemingly effortlessly.
I need the next book IMMEDIATELY!

I think...I think I liked this book. It's just written very oddly. There's a lot of physical abuse too which made it difficult to read sometimes. I am curious about the politics and structure of this world with it's prejudism against half people

Mariposa_Bookworm I just picked this one up from the library. I‘ll be honest, I was mostly intrigued by the cover. 7y

I love this book! The alternative England is so interesting and the new take on witches I loved. It has such a sprawling story line and you really get into the characters heads ❤️❤️❤️ Good if you like Books like Sorcerer to the Crown :) P.S please forgive the unappealing background of trains and the BFIs back entrance 😂😂

pppooraikul Loved it! The second book is a bit messy, though. But you need to get to the last book. The ending is nothing like I've ever expected! 👍🏼 Read on! 😁 7y

I read this as an audiobook.

The world in this book is really interesting. All the characters were done really well! I liked that this book shows that the 'good guys' aren't always good. They just appear that way on the outside. I recommend this audiobook too! The voice is really good and suits it! Something about the voice fitted the book so well.

Have you read this book? If so what did you think?!

I absolutely loved this book. The magical world of witches is split into white and black. Neither side really likes each other so imagine if you were half white and half black. That is the situation Nathan is in. His father is the most powerful black and that makes him not accepted in a predominately white witch community. I devoured this book. This series is simply amazing.

I just love the covers on this trilogy. But that's #PenguinCovers for you! The cover on the first book is equally lovely, but I no longer have it. The whole series is going to a 16 y/o family member. I'm just uh.. quality checking the books first. I mean... you got to know what you send to teens, right? In this case gore, killing, torture, PTSD, and fluidity of sexual orientation. And how good and evil are not as straightforward as they can seem.

I tend to stay clear of YA, but I am very glad a friend persuaded me to read this. It's fairly A for YA. I also tend to not like books written in the present tense, but here the story pulled me in so quickly and thoroughly that I hardly noticed the tense. Very well written! Protagonist is tough as nails and fragile as a kitten. Good and evil is not as black and white as it first seems. Now excuse me while I order the next book in the trilogy.

I started reading this book this evening and all of a sudden I'm on page 222 and it's 2:30am. It's the first book in a trilogy and I don't have the other two, so I guess I might as well pace myself. Go to bed. Order the other books in the morning with next day delivery (same day?) and then finish this book. Good plan. Or maybe one more chapter first...

I loved the premise of this book: our hero is half white witch, half black witch and suffers persecution and prejudice. Those themes are well demonstrated but this book was somehow lacking. It took a while to get into and I wanted to care more about the characters. Is it worth continuing with the series? I'd be interested to hear from those who have read further.

Dragon I just read Half Wild and found it violent and rated it soso another Litten says the last book is good. 8y
CaitlinSiem I liked the first book more than book two, which never gripped me at all. I've also heard the final book is better, and I will read it just to see how it ends but I'm not chomping at the bit to do so. 8y
pppooraikul The second book is even worse. But the last one, especially the ending, is worth it. (At least in my opinion. 😂) 8y

A strange book but intriguing. Set in a Europe full of black and white witches, filled with strife and prejudices, following a boy who is half black and half white witch. Recommended by @Waterstones 😊

TheLondonBookworm @abby_r oh no are they not as good? That's such a shame :( 8y
SusanInTiburon I love your photo! 8y
Abby_r It's not that they aren't good, but the atmosphere of the story just changes so drastically! It takes a much darker turn at the end of the second book, and the narrative changes quite a bit... I would still recommend it though as it is very satisfying once you finish them, and they are also relatively short so... 8y

I'm on the fence between pick and so-so. The general idea of judging people is good. The plot is okay. The female-dominated feels is strong and awesome. The narration is ...unusual. It's raw, hurt, a bit scared and real. It could be a turnoff for some but works fine for me. I was drawn to the end.

pppooraikul I'm currently halfway through the second book, Half Wild. It's not living up to the first book so far. And the writer annoys me by using 'cos' instead of 'because' and I'm not a native English speaker! (That didn't happen in the first book, though.) 8y
BookishFeminist Thanks for tagging me so I can see your review. :) Your thoughts are about the same as what I've heard about it so far. (And for the second book, I am a native English and using "cos" would drive me nuts!) 8y
