Ballad of Black Tom
Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle
People move to New York looking for magic and nothing will convince them it isn't there.Charles Thomas Tester hustles to put food on the table, keep the roof over his father's head, from Harlem to Flushing Meadows to Red Hook. He knows what magic a suit can cast, the invisibility a guitar case can provide, and the curse written on his skin that attracts the eye of wealthy white folks and their cops. But when he delivers an occult tome to a reclusive sorceress in the heart of Queens, Tom opens a door to a deeper realm of magic, and earns the attention of things best left sleeping.A storm that might swallow the world is building in Brooklyn. Will Black Tom live to see it break?"LaValle's novella of sorcery and skullduggery in Jazz Age New York is a magnificent example of what weird fiction can and should do." Laird Barron, author of "The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All""[LaValle] reinvents outmoded literary conventions, particularly the ghettos of genre and ethnicity that long divided serious literature from popular fiction." Praise for "The Devil in Silver" from Elizabeth Hand, author of "Radiant Days"

Now THAT is what I wanted out of a Halloween read. As I gather this is a response to the racism rampant in an HP Lovecraft novella, it's not a surprise that there are strong themes of racism, xenophobia, alienation and the abuse of power. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? You get a sweeping sense of dark power, bloody vengeance, tempered by the inevitable lesson that revenge is always destructive, to all involved. Impressive how a strong a vision of a particular time, place and fantasy elements is built into a world in such a short book. I was invested in and worried for Tommy immediately, as much as I hoped his rapscallion hustling might provide a better future rather than more trouble. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? LaValle ensures you feel Tommy's loss, and understand his choice that leads down a grimmer path. The switch to Malone's perspective was a little jarring, but it does make the climax that much more intense, and adds to the mystery in how much you don't see the minutiae of how Tommy became Black Tom and his first evil/morally gray deeds. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 The implication that his work to summon the Sleeping King explains our present day struggle with climate change is the cherry on top. The writing overall is superb. Definitely need to pick up more horror from this author.

⚠️racism, xenophobia, slurs

The last book I finished in June also happened to be one of my #roll100 picks for the month (which is great, since I haven't been doing so well with those!).

This was a low pick for me -- but mostly because it's a blend of two genres that aren't my faves (horror and historical fiction). That said, I think it was well-done, and being a short, quick read didn't hurt either!

LaValle is a black author and his novella is a modern take on Lovecraftian, cosmic horror. It‘s a decent reimagining which he dedicates to Lovecraft, “with all my conflicted feelings”. The sentiment is profound: for any sensible reader, Lovecraft‘s work is wildly imaginative but his jarring tone exposes some bonkers & racist attitudes. LaValle does a good job of subverting HP‘s racism and putting a black (anti)hero into the Cthulhu mythos

Readergrrl I really enjoyed this novella. LaValle is one of my favorite authors. The Changeling may be my favorite psychological/horror/mythopoeic novels ever! 1y

🎧 1920‘s NYC. Tommy couldn‘t carry a tune in a bucket but he transports items across town using a guitar case.

One day it‘s an occult book & suddenly the book has taken off on a Lovecraft/occult tangent.

Racism, police brutality & what happens when you are forced to become the monster …

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie Yayyyy, glad you liked it. I really don‘t do audio because the first audiobook I ever did had a horrible narrator. But with the past 3 I‘ve been pretty lucky. 2y

This is my first Lavalle and shame on me. He‘s really good. In 1920s Harlem, 20yo Charles Timothy Tester keeps going out of his neighborhood with his guitar case and no music talent doing errands for folks of the occult/arcane. It‘s a cosmic story on a grand scale that wraps itself around a person who is pushed into becoming a monster. So effing good!

THE BALLAD OF BLACK TOM by Victor LaValle

In 1924 NYC, Tommy discreetly transports items for people. Often strange items. One item, a mysterious book, leads him into a terrifying conspiracy—a COSMIC conspiracy that could reveal the realm of Almighty Cthulhu—and a chance to literally remake the world.

Part social commentary on racism, part existential horror, Tommy‘s tragic story is both riveting and enraging—and full of real-life monsters.

My #DoubleSpin pick for September. I probably would have enjoyed this more if I was familiar with H.P. Lovecraft‘s work, but as it was, I thought it was interesting and worth the hour or so it took to read it. @TheAromaofBooks 3⭐️

PatriciaU I‘ve been away from Litsy for a bit so have to ask - what does #doublespin mean? 3y
candority @PatriciaU It‘s a monthly challenge/game that @TheAromaofBooks hosts! Each month, you make a list of 20 books you want to read and she pulls out a #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin number. If you read those books, you‘re entered for a prize at the end of the year. She also does #BookSpinBingo where you make a bingo card with all your books (and 5 free spaces) and try to read as many as possible each month. It‘s fun and a great way to tackle your TBR! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @PatriciaU - Brooke did a great job explaining the challenge. If you're interested in more details, I have a master post here - https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 - I draw each month's numbers on the 2nd of the month, so September's posts drawing the numbers & bingo card are towards the top of my page if you want to look through them & see some more about the challenge. Anyone is welcome to join so just let me know if have questions!! 3y

This was a fun and fast read by one of my favorite authors, Victor LaValle. I think I would have liked to see the story more fleshed out, but, as a novella, I quite enjoyed the experience. I loved the HBO series, Lovecraft Country, and this novella felt the same. Overall, I‘ll give this a 4/5 ⭐️ because it was just what I was looking for: escapist, dark, fast, and fun! ☠️🐙🎸🔪

This was a nice little jab at Lovecraft, among other things, that is best listened to. The audiobook is short and the narrator does a great job.

Readergrrl I just started reading this last night! I love Victor Lavalle! 3y
Leniverse I've got this on my Kindle. Might check what it will cost to whispersync it. 3y
night_shift @Readergrrl my first read of his! I'm pretty interested in checking out the changeling. @Leniverse does it cost to whispersync? I barely use the kindle app, mostly get books through my library lol 3y
Leniverse @UnidragonFrag When you buy a Kindle book, you get a huge discount on the Audio. Actually, you might get the discount even if it hasn't been set up for the whispersync function. Not sure. I just know that since I don't have an Audible subscription it's always cheaper to get the e-book/audio combo than to buy just the Audio! (It works with KU as well, so I can borrow the ebook and just pay for the discounted audio.) 3y
Readergrrl is one of my favorites! So dark and multidimensional. I especially liked the mythopoeic element to it (yes, I had to look that genre title up the first time I heard it said about this novel…it‘s now my favorite genre!). 3y

I‘ve read just enough Lovecraft to be underwhelmed & disgusted (by the author, not the stories), but I ❤️ Lovecraft Country & have had this book on my kindle for ages.

Very well-written, accessible horror that does not back down from the horror of racism while it‘s at it. A quick, tightly-wound novella that packs a punch & left me both wanting more & slightly depressed.

QOTD- Best cosmic horror?

The Ballad of Black Tom is a novella released a few years ago and is part lovecraftian horror and part historical drama.

The supporting characters and the conflict were somewhat underbaked, but that doesn't take away from the resonant ending to this story about anger, grief, and our own insignificance.
