That was a fun puzzle. More about working out the how than the who. My third Higashino (after Malice and Devotion of Suspect X) and I‘ll definitely be reading more. Really enjoy his style.

Mandoul Totally agree - I really enjoy Higashino's style, which makes for a fun read. 2y

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one of the oldest selections on my TBR list - Originally added November 11, 2017.

I love these cozy Japanese mysteries. In this, Book 2 of the Detective Galileo series, someone has poisoned a newly wed man‘s coffee. His wife? His girlfriend? The maid? The butler? And why? Thus begins an investigation worthy of Hercule Poirot.

BarbaraBB I too love his books, they are really comfort reading for me and I love the Japanese setting! 4y

I loved this Japanese crime novel where the primary suspect is a famous quilter. I‘ve really liked the other books I‘ve read by this author too. And if you‘ve never seen any Japanese patchwork, it‘s usually exquisite, not to mention extremely intricate (and usually sewn by hand).

ValerieAndBooks I‘ll have to check this out! Since I‘m a quilter (but not famous 😂)! 4y
BarbaraBB I love his books! 4y
arubabookwoman @ValerieAndBooks I'm a quilter too, which is why this struck me! 4y

ValerieAndBooks @arubabookwoman awesome. I started quilting 30 years ago but in the last few years kind of stopped. Now, I‘ve picked it up again (2019) but focusing on finishing UFOs and/or using my existing stash (which I had not added to in 10 years)! How about you? 4y
arubabookwoman @ValerieAndBooks Sorry for the delay in answeing. Life has a way...I started quilting about 1990, and have kept it up. At 1st I made bed quilts for the kids etc, but for the last 15 yrs or so I mostly do art quilts (maybe not even quilts b/c they often don't have a 3rd layer. ) They're all by hand, heavily embroidered/stitched and usually abstract. Recently I've started making bed quilts again for grandkids👇👇 (edited) 4y
arubabookwoman For bed quilts I love scrappy quilts, as well as wonky African-American patterns and piecing. How about you? 4y
ValerieAndBooks 1990 is the year I started :-) ! That was before kids. Lap quilts, bedquilts, wall hangings, with hand quilting (with machine piecing mostly). When they got older and I got a newer sewing machine I started doing machine quilting more but physically struggled with it for bigger quilts. So I started doing more “art quilts“ but then after yet another move due to husband's career and having to pay for kids' activities (and later college), just (cont) 4y
ValerieAndBooks sort of stopped doing anything quilt-related at all for a few years. I started up again a couple years ago, but back to traditional roots, and for the most part only pulling from my fabric stash. I recently finished a Christmas quilt for the guest bedroom with this very simple pattern :-) . https://cluckclucksew.com/2013/06/finished-scrappy-summer-and-pattern.html Machine quilting (straight lines) it was tough! Hope in a few years can pay (cont) 4y
ValerieAndBooks people to do it professionally for me. After my last kid is done with college, maybe :-). My mom is also a quilter (totally traditional) and I have many of hers too :-) .

Sorry that got long...no need to reply to all that :-) .

For me the focus on the arson was a bit too narrow - too little actually happened to my taste - but still a more than decent thriller.

The Devotion of Suspect X remains my favorite but I‘m eager to read another Higashino.

Cathythoughts I agree Suspect X still my fave 👍🏻❤️ 5y
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts My next one will be Malice. You read that one didn‘t you? How would you rank it among these two? 5y

Malice still remains my favourite book from this author because of the sleuthing & mind games. But this book was far superior when it came to heart of a story & depth. I am not sure if it's as memorable as the rest of the author's stories, but I would love to see this adapted into a movie (has it been adapted?) . I won't reread it but it's definitely a one time read book. Go for it, it's a quick read as well.

Cathythoughts Love this author ... I‘ve read 3 .. & I want more. This one is not my fave , Devotion of Suspect X still the best , Malice comes in 2d .... 👍🏻❤️ 5y
rrkreads @Cathythoughts I got spoiled to the plot of devotion of suspect x hence I liked malice better than that. But u r right this author is just too good, I have finished 4 books of his & all of them r way above all the other thrillers I hv read till date. 5y
Cathythoughts It‘s so good to find a decent thriller 👍🏻❤️ 5y

I did think this was very good ! Cleverly done. Maybe a little too complicated & too precise ... for my liking. I liked The Devotion of Suspect X the best ( so far )
still a pick 👍🏻

gradcat I liked these books, too, but I agree with you about the complicated plotting. These books remind me very much of James Church‘s “Inspector O” series (I‘m reading one of them now). They are set in N. Korea. If you‘re interested, the first one is 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Too ‘precise‘ perhaps is the word 😉. 6y

gradcat You‘re very welcome, my dear. And, by the way, I just posted my review of the second book in the series, if you care to read it. There will be a bit more info on the protagonist and his thankless job there: 6y

This police procedural will have you wanting to finish it in one sitting. Det. Kusanagi, his partner, and physicist Yukawa dubbed ‘Det. Galileo‘ once again work together to solve a crime. The plot is simple, the crime is brilliant..an almost perfect crime. From earlier on, we are led to suspect a character, but that doesn‘t take away the suspense and will still keep us hooked on. An absorbing ‘howdunnit‘. I liked this better than the first book.👍

Cinfhen Do you need to read the first book to appreciate this one??? It sounds really good!!! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @Cinfhen they can be read as stand-alone. Both deal with Detective Kusanagi and his unconventional, genius physics professor friend, Yukawa. 6y

A procedural worthy of Sherlock. The mystery is not so much who committed the murder but how and why. It was interesting change from most western crime novels. #InTranslation #2018christyread

“Kusanagi had met plenty of good, admirable people who‘d been turned into murderers by circumstance. There was something about them he always seemed to sense, an aura that they shared. Somehow, their transgressions freed them from the confines of a mortal existence, allowing them to perceive the great truths of the universe. At the same time...they straddled the line between sanity and madness.”
