Glad I gave her another go. This was her first book and I have really enjoyed it. The characters are very real. Looking forward to reading more with the detective Cormac.

If you‘re looking for an excellent mystery with suspense, betrayal, and corruption, I highly recommend The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan. It‘s the first installment of the Cormac Reilly Mystery series. I purchased the audiobook from Audible. I loved the beautiful narration by Aoife McMahon. I could listen to her all day!

The reader was great in this book! DI Cormac Reilly has transferred to Galway because of his girlfriends work. The atmosphere at the Garda is strange. He's assigned a cold case that he witnessed 20 years ago. Aisling's boyfriend Jack has committed suicide, his long lost sister Maude returns convinced it was murder. And the cold case revolves around Maude's mothers death.
A really good start to this series! I'll definitely read the next one!

This was the first official book in the Reilly Cormac series. I really enjoyed it but found it a little slow and slightly predictable. It gave a lot of good insight on who the characters are. I am looking forward to the next book tho. 🤓
Cormac Reilly was new to the Garda when he first met 15 year old Maude and her 5 year old brother Jack. Twenty years later, he is newly transferred to Galway and stuck working cold cases when the past resurfaces in unexpected ways. A tense, atmospheric police procedural, and a painful look at the fate of children left unprotected by society.
Couldn't put it down.
I am that person who has to read the last page first...not with this one.
The characters are so compelling and the twists and turns of the story kept me hooked on the next sentence and the next chapter and I just couldn't look away for even a moment.
Went in with low expectations as I downloaded it at Heathrow Airport desperately seeking something to keep me awake. Murder mystery set in and around Galway. Exciting enough with twists and turns. Many TW‘s. Did the job though. Impressive narrator considering the plethora of accents.
I finished a book 🎉. And thoroughly enjoyed it too!
This is set in Galway. A detective returning home, reopens one of his earliest cases following the apparent suicide of one of the children he found that day. But why do the team around him seem to be working against him? And who can he trust?
Not too graphic/gory, but content warnings in comments.
This was a fantastic read, and a gift from Cathy backalong. Thank you @Cathythoughts 🤗
Train reading. Yes, that is a scraggy little palm tree outside the window. I seem to be on a crime thing at the moment- really enjoying this so far.
Following a probable suicide, Cormac Reilly, working on cold cases after a move back to Galway, is asked to reopen one of his earliest cases. But why?
Three bingos this month for #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks
New, exciting author for me with the tagged book!
My first completed book of October isn‘t even on my #BookSpin list. (Yay for free spaces). I read this series out of order which made me know more about the storyline about why Cormac doesn‘t fit in with his new police colleagues than I should have if I‘d read this first book first. I did still like the main mystery, and agree that this is a good series for people who enjoy Tana French. The audiobook narrator is great.
My first read for September #BookSpinBingo. And what a read. I‘m mesmerized by mystery thrillers these days and this one is TERRIFIC. And it was my #BookSpin! Atmospheric police procedural, set in Galway, first in a series. I‘ve got the second on hold at the library already!
The pic is from Tuesday morning, after the hot weather broke. The view is from the front of the house, looking East. So lovely. Happy Labor Day weekend, littens!
LOVED this on audio! This was an audible freebie I downloaded on a whim.
I totally agree with the comparisons to Tana French, and I actually think this series is a great alternative to those who struggle with the DMS books and French's standalones. Seems like McTiernan traded French's world building and atmosphere for a faster pace and more action. Both are great storytellers overall, and this was a win!
The narrator of this book is fantastic! I found a lot of it interesting, but as a whole it left me feeling flat. There‘s a lot happening in this book, and I feel like it‘s almost too much. There are too many threads unraveling, and the ending wasn‘t satisfying. I may or may not listen to the sequel. Probably moving on to something else. #audible #audiobook
This is a good read, if you can handle the claustrophobia of the antagonist being in a position of quite a bit of power, with a conspiracy to back them up. I am going into the sequel hoping that it won‘t perpetuate the cliffhanger, but I‘m iffy about it.
What a great read. Set in Galway, this is the first book in the Cormac Reilly series. A really solid thriller/police procedural with intertwining mysteries and plenty of potential villains. If you enjoyed Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series, you will like this one! 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
Starting this tonight, the first in a series! Apparently her work is similar to Tana French, which definitely piqued my interest!
Here is a series that I‘ve started and still need to get to the second book. I really enjoyed the Ruin at least! #top20series #20series20days
The wonderful Dervla McTiernan has these fascinating, down-to-earth short webinars on writing.
And I love her accent.
And I love her bookshelf.
Dervla and Karin Slaughter had a hilarious booktalk as well recently.

Nervy, haunting & gripping, the plot is strengthened by the alternating male and female narrations with the author giving the character jus the right dab of depth. Scrubbed with the right dose of perfection and flaws to make him redolent, determined and caring, Det Cormac Reilly is a great character to sink one's teeth into.
If you are looking for an utterly compelling & a standout crime thriller read, pick up The Rúin from your local bookstore.
5 🌟
Picked this up on a whim and wow! It is fantastic. Was engrossed from the first couple of pages on. Grabbed a hold of me and wouldn't let go, so intense and gripping. Am so excited that there's a second in the series out already. Definitely my next book.

#booked2020 #finishinaday Listened to The Sisters - a short audio prequel to Irish mystery/detective series Cormac Reilly. Tagged book The Ruin is #1 in series. I‘m really enjoying this series, the storyline is fresh and smart and audio narration by Irish actress Aoife McMahon is very well done.
My bookclub is reading the second in this series for our Jan book. Who picks the second book in a series?!? So of course, I picked up the first one. Great for fans of Tana French, this one had me turning pages long after I should have put it down. McTiernan was woven quite the tale and it was fascinating to see it unfold.
My book club is reading the second in the series, I decided to prep myself with this first, my first read of McTiernan.
It is a story of two deaths, how they are connected, and how they are solved. It was really slow, but once the action started I could not put it down. I'm now sure if I was to like Aisling Conroy. The ending was half way predictable, but was still interesting.
I would recommend this to any one that likes detective mysteries.
A competent police procedural with a basic storyline. The only sticking point for me lay in the narration rather than the story - a truly dreadful attempt at an Australian accent.
The story meandered a bit and never really hit that ‘edge of your seat‘ pace which would have made for a far more exciting book. Having said that though, the characterization was good and the plot was sufficiently filled with red herrings / twists that I give it 3 stars.
Pretty sure this is why God invented Fridays.
I was too busy reading yesterday to post my #JanuaryTBR but here it is... SO MANY carry-overs from Dec, my #FlaviaBuddyRead, my #GirlyBookClub book (plus the first one in that series - who picks the second book in a series for a book club?!), four more books in my never-ending quest to #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks and the book for #ATreeGrowsInBrooklynBuddyRead. So if you‘ll please excuse me, I need to start reading!
I have joined the Book Cart Brigade!
Toffee supervised while I audiobuilt the trolley (listening to the tagged book) and filled it with some of my TBR pile. I‘m not keen on risking the bottom shelf to those needle-sharp teeth after the sad demise of my Agatha Christie collection.

Well-done detective novel that has a recent case with a connection to an old case. Good lead character, well-paced and good twists. 2019 no. 17
The first in a new series set in Ireland by an author with one of the most wonderful names ever. Cormac Reilly wonders if there might be more to young Jack's suicide. His long absent sister Maude is sure there is. But just how might this tie to Reilly's first case years ago?
I loved this book and am quite ready to start the next in the series.

Really engaged in this audiobook; finding it hard to stop listening & get to my errands!
This was an excellent procedural mystery. There was just the right balance of tension and shock without it getting gory or explicit. I had fun putting the pieces together from the mystery in the past and the current murder, and there were a few reveals that I didn't see coming. I don't think I've read any other mysteries set in Ireland, so that was really interesting as well. The audio version of this is great.
TW: suicide, child abuse
This Audible Original isn‘t in the Litsy database yet, but is a prequel to the tagged book. It is a short listen about sisters Carrie and Aifric, both working in criminal justice in Dublin, and who both get involved in the same case of a boyfriend accused of killing his girlfriend. Aifric is on the boyfriend‘s criminal defense team, and Carrie is an officer who finds some evidence that affects the case. I think I‘ll be reading more of this author.
This review relates to The Sisters (.5 in the series):
Great little (3 hour) pallet cleanser between novels — I just love these Audible Originals. This particular one is an Irish crime novel. It is the beginning of a series and you can be sure I will read the next installment. It was great.
Good detective thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I hadn‘t realised it was the first in a series and I was trying not to start any new series. Oh well.
Another passenger gave us this book. A friend of her goddaughter wrote it. It‘s riveting! This is how I spend my evenings on the cruise. Today we are in Norway. 🇳🇴
A cold case stretching back 20 years brings DI Cormac Reilly full circle.
A good start to a new series, I liked the main character & the plot was intriguing. All in all I enjoyed reading it, & will be checking out the next in the series. 4🌟
Almost gave this a SoSo but decided I‘m not in a good place to be reading just now. I did find it a bit hard to keep track of the characters , and sometimes the plot got the better of me. However it is very well written and author , though Irish , is living here in Perth. @MrsMalaprop
I picked up these 2 today ( buy one / get one half price 🙄) cNt resist it. I‘d love to read them both NOW ... but that‘s not possible.. roll on the Hollidays... ⭐️
