Wizard
Wizard: The Life And Times Of Nikola Tesla | Marc Seifer
11 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 20 to read
The story of one of the most prolific, independent, and iconoclastic inventors of this century . . . fascinating.Scientific American Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), credited as the inspiration for radio, robots, and even radar, has been called the patron saint of modern electricity. Based on original material and previously unavailable documents, this acclaimed book is the definitive biography of the man considered by many to be the founding father of modern electrical technology. Among Teslas creations were the channeling of alternating current, fluorescent and neon lighting, wireless telegraphy, and the giant turbines that harnessed the power of Niagara Falls. This essential biography is illustrated with sixteen pages of photographs, including the July 20, 1931, Time magazine cover for an issue celebrating the inventors career. Wizard is a truly remarkable biography of a remarkable man. The expression ahead of his time is used too loosely and too often today but in the case of Nikola Tesla ahead of his time barely describes the genius of this man. Marc Seifer makes us understand not only the man but the times in which he lived.Nelson DeMille A deep and comprehensive biography of a great engineer of early electrical sciencelikely to become the definitive biography. Highly recommended.American Association for the Advancement of Science Vivid, revelatory . . . the fullest account yet of Tesla as an entrepreneur, experimental physicist and inventor.Publishers Weekly

Mehso-so

I saw the “Nikola Tesla: Mind from the Future“ exhibition in Budapest about two years ago, and it was interesting, but it left me with more questions than answers. So I was really glad to pick up a comprehensive biography about this fascinating man.
Unfortunately, while I respect the effort the author had put in his research, I have to say I was bored by all the tiny details he dumped on me on every page. I think less would have been more here. ⬇️

eeclayton Also, I would have been happier with fewer exhaustive technical descriptions, although I admit these can be appreciated by someone more into physics and technology than myself.
All in all, I don't regret reading this book, as I have learned a lot about Tesla. But it was a struggle.

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! And I think it can be hard to find a biography with the right balance of details - sometimes it feels like an author wants to wedge in every single interesting thing they discovered, and that just doesn't always work. 4y
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks Thanks 😊 I couldn't agree more! 4y

Pickpick

This is a bit dry and very technical, but totally fascinating! Tesla‘s life spanned 86 years and witnessed some amazing discoveries, many his own. He was an eccentric with an astonishing mind, living decades in NYC hotels, developing a penchant for pigeons, and was a self-described celibate. We can thank Nikola Tesla for many of our modern conveniences. And he was friends with Mark Twain which is pretty cool in my book.

Crazeedi I have a different bio of Tesla on my shelf, this one looks good. I read some, his childhood was crazy! As you know. 7y
britt_brooke @Crazeedi Have you read the novel The Last Days of Night? It‘s what got me interested in Tesla. I didn‘t know much about him prior to that. Such a fascinating person! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Ooooh. I found this on Scribd and now it‘s on my TBR. Thanks! 😎📚😍 7y

britt_brooke @kspenmoll He‘s very interesting! I highly recommend the novel The Last Days of Night which is about the electricity battle between Edison and Westinghouse. Tesla is a key part of it. Very good read! 7y
kspenmoll @britt_brooke Will read that - I am familiar with the author! Thanks! 7y

"I don't care that they stole my idea; I care that they don't have any of their own." Happy Birthday Nikola Tesla!
