This is a cute enough story, but it doesn't hold together as tightly as it might have. There are a couple of scenes that just kind of stop, as though the author didn't know how to end them so just moved on. It left me craving resolution. Also, the children are sometimes inconsistent in how they act compared to their ages. In particular, some of their conversations with one another seem too much like how grownups speak (manner, not content).

I loved this middle grade book that takes place in the depression era and tackles issues like the KKK and voting rights. Would recommend for 3rd grade and up. For an in-depth understanding of the Brown v Board ruling I recommend Simple Justice. #integrateyourshelf

Cant wait to reread this book with my almost 8-year old. Stella is an 11yo black girl in depression era North Carolina.Issues like the klan, segregation, poll taxes, and intimidation are dealt with an age appropriate manner but one that does not shirk from reality. Stella wants to write and keeps at it despite her difficulty with it. Her parents are wonderful characters and show her her value as a person. Rec the audio on hoopla. #1streadof2020

This historical fiction book is good because uses the authentic language of back then and accurately portrays the ongoing thoughts and actions someone might've made. The subject of touching on KKK and other segregated issues are never easy, and its brought in with some much light and hope that things will get better. The details of it are authentic to its actions and you can tell correct research has been made!

This book is something that can be new and interesting to a child. Although he holds a hard touching subject, it is portrayed well and gives a good detail of what conflicts went on back then. It also lets these children to start holding their own opinions and knowing what is right and wrong within the world of how to treat people correctly!

The theme of this book may be dark for some ages, but the issues covered are very important. Using this book to use along with writing activities is a great idea! Draper is another favorite middle grade author. Her books are wonderful.

Just finished this one last night. Great read! Stella is an ordinary girl who acts heroically at multiple points in the story. Draper does a beautiful job of balancing painful historical events with the joy of a loving, close knit community.

This book is wonderful. It introduces the concept of segregation and the KKK to middle graders in a way that is heartfelt and touching and powerful. I loved this one. Had me on the edge of my seat with worry and fear at times, but I loved it.

Very good middle grade novel for teaching the awful truth about the Klu Klux Klan without being terrifying for children. Audiobook was excellent.

Sharon Draper is best known for her middle grade novel Out of My Mind, which was excellent. This middle grade novel (based on her grandmother's childhood) was suggested specifically as an #audiobook and Heather Simms' narration is so very good so far. #currentread #currentlyreading

This HF book was amazing! I loved Sharon M. Draper‘s writing style. Set in 1930‘s North Carolina, during the time of segregation and the KKK, a young girl named Stella inspires to become a writer, and turns to writing to help her deal with the world around her. Stella, her family, and friends are put to the test, and must face their fears and show true strength to fight for their right to vote! Great for an LC in 4-8 grade. #UCFLAE3414SP18

I love Sharon M Draper, but the plot of this book felt so unresolved at the end, and it was unsatisfying.

“Stella's father hesitated. "Georgia supports me, but she was a mite trembly this morning. I brought Stella though." He squeezed her shoulders affectionately. "I don't want to just tell her about bravery--I want to show her what it looks like.”

This book focused on the south in the 30's and the crazy, misguided way some people thought and behaved. But it also showed the main character revising her work while writing. Two wonderful lessons for students, but also a fantastic story. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This was also my first #LitsyAtoZ!

This is for young readers but I still am at a standstill at what level I would have students read this to really understand the struggles of African Americans in 1932. It really shows the way that blacks were treated and of the ignorance of the KKK. The actions of the KKK make this book very real. Who in there right mind takes part in a group as such???

This book is about and African American communion and their daily struggles with the white community and The Klu Klux Klan. Stella is a girl who is very adventurous in a way that has gotten her into some trouble but also solved a major issue going on with it the Bumblebee community. #dbc middlegrade pick for the September topic of race.
I need to read more diversely so joining in on the reading of the diverse picks is wonderful. This book was bittersweet. I hated reading about the racial oppression but it happened and how the black community in the town looked after their own was uplighting and lovely, even though they didnt deserve the way they were all treated. Great middle grade discussion book! 4 stars.

A beautiful book that I can't wait to share with my daughter. Stella's family and friends are role models in the way they handled themselves in the face of such disturbing behavior. They were calm, peaceful, and kind. They didn't match hate for hate and never lashed out. I'm anticipating lots of worthwhile conversations with my daughter after she finishes reading this one.

This is the middle grade Sept pick for the Diverse Books Club. The writing is excellent and the characters are so fleshed-out and three-dimensional. This book is thought-provoking and heartbreaking, but also hopeful. I marked so many quotes to write in my book journal, I had to stop and give my hand a break! Highly recommended for kids and adults.

Solid book for younger readers about the segregated south in the 1930's. Draper does she good job keeping the perspective realistic for a children's understanding of the situations they are seeing in their everyday lives.

I've read three more books nominated for the William Allen White Book Award for 6th through 8th grades. I just have five more books to go on this list.

This excellent middle grade novel deals with the heavy topic of the Klan attacking African Americans in 1930s North Carolina. It ends on a hopeful note. My only complaint is that the ending leaves things unresolved. I guess that's better than it being unrealistically positive. The narration of the audiobook is also excellent.

So begins the RoscoeBooks middle grade book club pick for February. Unfortunately timely in its discussions about the KKK and racism, I'm so glad this book exists for younger readers.

Amping up my school reading. Middle grade book takes place in early 20th century. Young girl finding her writing voice while dealing with racial tensions and the KKK in her small town. Great historical view with strong protagonist. I love Sharon Draper.
