Doctor De Soto | William Steig
post image
Pickpick

For my author study glog, I did William Steig and I checked out this book for my presentation. A great read written and illustrated by William about a mouse dentist who treats all kinds of animals. Very cute and entertaining! Teacher resource: http://www.scholastic.com/browse/collateral.jsp?id=32413 #UCFLAE3414sp17

CaraM This is a really cute animal fantasy and will be great for young students when reading aloud. 8y
DrSpalding Scholastic is a high-quality resource and Steig is a classic author. This is one of the rare picture books that won the Newbery! Good choice. 8y

New Shoes | Susan Lynn Meyer
post image

A realistic fiction picture book, this is a great text to go along with your future unit plans about the civil rights era. Ella Mae, when faced with the harsh reality of discrimination, finds a way to show the world in a unique way how she responds to being treated unfairly. Teacher resource:https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&tid=41885 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding Sharing historical time periods like the civil rights movement with young children aligns with social studies standards. These books often times broach controversial subjects in a sensitive way. Wonderful selection. 8y

Mehso-so

A wonderful collection of poems and illustrations by Shel Silverstein full of emotions. Very engaging for all readers, but discretion should be advised. Some of the poems may not be appropriate for the classroom, but as a teacher you can pick and chose what to use. I liked this poem "Needles and Pins" and thought I would share it here. Teacher resource: https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?a=1&tid=2258 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This poet and these poems are wonderful selections for choral poetry or echo poetry or simply poetry read aloud's in your classroom. Use them! 8y

The City of Ember | Jeanne DuPrau

"What you need to learn, children, is the difference between right and wrong in every area of life. And once you learn the difference, you must always choose the right." Teacher resource: https://www.varsitytutors.com/englishteacher/duprau #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding While the movie was somewhat disappointing, this quartet of books about the city of Ember, is awesome. If you have yet to read the series, I highly recommend them. 8y

Rapunzel | Paul O. Zelinsky
post image
Pickpick

Written and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, this traditional price of literature tells the tale for children through beautiful artwork of Rapunzel and the Prince. I read this to my pre-schoolers and they loved the pictures and the tale! A great read for elementary and visual learners. Teacher resource: https://www.teachervision.com/childrens-book/rapunzel-literature-guide #UCFLAE3414sp17

AlexandriaJ I love this book! I used it for one of my reading response project and really enjoyed the story line because I only know the Rapunzel from Disney movies! 8y
DrSpalding So many young children have seen this only in the movie form. Sharing high-quality traditional literature is vital in the primary grades. Especially award winning books like this one. 8y

Finding Winnie | Lindsay Mattick

"There is something you must always remember," Harry said. "It's the most important thing really. Even if we're apart, I'll always love you. You'll always be my bear." Teacher resource http://media.hdp.hbgusa.com/titles/assets/reading_group_guide/9780316324908/EG_9... #UCFLAE3414sp17

PriscillaD After professor Spalding introduced this book to the class I've been wanting to read it! It sounds great! I think students would enjoy reading it 8y
AlexandriaJ While I was in Barnes and Noble I took the time to read this book and absolutely adored it! Children will love to hear the story behind Winnie the Pooh! 8y
DrSpalding Your peers enjoyed this title as well. There are few people that don't like Winnie the Pooh and knowing where the story came from, is awesome. 8y

Charlotte's Web | E. B. White
post image
Pickpick

After I read the first few chapters of White's Trumpet of the Swan, I was more than thrilled to find out he also wrote one Charlottes Web. Loved the movie as a child, so I was excited to read this book. Truly a fantastic read for the classroom (animal lovers of course) and touches your heart in a special way. Teacher resource: scholastic.com/teachers/unit-plans/teaching-content/charlottes-web-teachers-guide/ #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding You could perform an author study on White. These are classic stories that third and fourth graders should read! Stuart Little is my favorite. And author with the last name of Sweet, recently published a very long picture book about his life. Check it out. https://www.amazon.com/Some-Writer-Notable-Childrens-Books/dp/0544319591 8y

Lincoln: A Photobiography | Russell Freedman
post image
Pickpick

This photo-biography is an excellent resource for kids without "dumbing" down the content. It is very well-written for both children and adults and also a winner of the Newberry award. It provides a look into his life in a personal and unique way through black and white photographs. Truly a great read I will use this in my class for sure. Teacher resource: teaching books.net/to.cgi?a=1&tid=4025 #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This is an excellent addition to your classroom library in regards to teaching about historical figures namely Lincoln. Good choice. Amazing photographs. 8y

DrSpalding With your selections, you could do a book pass with his books and have different literature circles reading different titles by the same author. 8y

This book was sentimental, and I look forward to reading it for my teach live. I liked the fact that it is a true story (non-fiction), based on the actual events of Phillipe. Reading this, I thought of how frightening it would be if I walked between the twin towers. It leads the reader to learn more about what happened to the towers (for the younger generations) teacher resource: teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=4345&a=1 #UCFLAE3414sp17

KaylaC This book sounds very intense! I would have never though that was what the book was about if I just read the title. It seems like it is captivating and I definitely want to read more about it! 8y
Mlegg This was the other book I thought about reading for teach live. It seems like a very informational book and is put in a way that children will understand. 8y
DrSpalding Wonderful post. This is a powerful story in light of what occurred in 2001. 8y

http://www.glencoe.com/sec/literature/litlibrary/pdf/where_the_red_fern_grows.pd... The story outlines the tale of a boy and his two hunting dogs (paid for by himself through two years of hard work) and their journey in hunting. The bond between a boy and his two dogs is one that cannot be broken. Amazing read and would recommend this novel to anyone who is able to read a chapter book. #UCFLAE3414sp17

DrSpalding This would be an excellent selection for a literature circle in the intermediate grades. 8y
