Whisper Man
Whisper Man | Alex North
"The Whisper Man is the most unsettling thriller I have read since Jo Nesbo's The Snowman. Much more than the sum of its parts, it is nightmarish and disturbing and, at the same time, a moving and life-affirming novel about fathers and sons, and grief, loss, and recovery."--Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent PatientIn this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of suspense, as a father and son are caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town. After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank. But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window...

An excellent thriller about a serial killer who targets young boys, that also explores father son relationships. Fast paced, and enthralling.

October is scary month and this read fits right in. Who killed the small boys in this small town? Didn‘t they already find the killer? When children are part of the story it‘s beyond scary…😩. Psychologically scary.

A solid thriller with lots of twists and turns. If I read this again I would skip the audiobook though. The narrator did not differentiate the characters well so it was difficult keeping track of POV‘s. 4⭐️

A brilliant story with a slightly paranormal twist which I loved. I enjoy books involving moving to new towns and starting over, and this one was exceptional. The old crimes restarting 20 years later aspect was intriguing and I enjoyed how the whole story unraveled to its riveting conclusion. A great new author (for me) to watch.

This was a perfect book for the Halloween season! It was a subtle thriller which I liked and was not over the top. After a local boy goes missing is new resident Tom Kennedys son the latest target? I just really liked the slow build to the climax and truly was creeped out in parts. Definitely recommend 🤩

SamAnne I‘ve been trying to get to this one for two Halloweens in a row! Maybe next month…. (edited) 2y
Bec_lectic @SamAnne that is so frustrating especially when the book is almost 3 years old! 2y

Finishing off my holiday reading stack with this very enjoyable chiller/crime novel. As a young boy goes missing it mirrors crime committed 20 yrs earlier whose perpetrator is in prison. The connection brings the original detective back into the investigation while at the same time a widowed father and son move into the local creepy house and strange things start occurring. Really well told story which kept me guessing to the end .

All the stars!
It's a shame it took me 3 years to finally get around to reading this page turner, but I'm just glad I finally did!
A story that examines the relationship between fathers and sons....oh, and serial killers.
There were moments that were truly frightening where I found myself holding my breath! And yet, there were moments that were extremely poignant that had me drying my tears.
A must read!

This was my first Alex North book and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed the twists and turns throughout. There were parts in the plot that made me say “oh come on!?,“ but those were few and far between.

I don't want to say too much out of fear of giving away some of the story. If you like creepy mysteries, you will likely like this!

This was a good one! A fast ride, sufficiently creepy and just a well-done thriller. Loved all of the different POVs and how it kept me guessing and very invested.

Side note: I‘ve had my BOTM copy on my shelf for a couple of years, but 100% listened to the audio instead because it‘s read by the 9th Doctor.😘

You know that feeling when you‘re reading and you get so lost in the story that you forgot you were reading a book? The mental imagery projected so clearly in your minds eye that when you take a break and look up you‘ve forgotten you exist in this reality?

This is that book.

Ooh! This is a good one! Well crafted with little twists along the way, this novel keeps the reader guessing to the end. It's a look at how we deal with trauma and loss and how we listen to others (or not). It's also about the things that haunt us and how sometimes the difference between "real" and "imaginary" isn't all that clear (and maybe doesn't even matter).

ImperfectCJ It could go either way, but I'm calling it a theme read, 5 hrs, 3 readathons = 165 pts for #TeamSlaughter #scarathlon #littenlisten #bookspinbingo #screamathon 3y

This was a rec from one of my coworkers. It was good! I liked the story and the characters. At the beginning I was afraid it was going to spook me too much, but it honestly didn‘t. That doesn‘t detract from the story though - definitely satisfied my true crime interest. It was a pretty easy, enjoyable read

This book reminded me of the reason why I love crime fiction: the thrill. The pacing was great, and I was at the edge of my seat all the time I was reading it.There was even a night where my anxiety kicked in and I had to put this book down for a while because it was beginning to 'feed' it. 😅

North is definitely someone to watch out for! 🧐

Last month, I read The Whisper Man by Alex North—and holy smokes, this was a thrill ride. Might just be my favorite title my eyes have consumed this year, so far.

Father and young son seek a fresh start in a small town, but instead are swept up in the town‘s dark past—a past scarred by a serial killer.

I love scary stories.
I do not scare easily.
This book scared me.

This twisted tale gets 5/5 butterflies.

A drunk cop, a loving father, and a 5-year-old live in a city where a whispering murderer is killing kids. This book had it all! Murder, mystery, ghosts, and even butterflies. The plot had me reading straight through (not only because I was avoiding nightmares) but because I HAD TO KNOW, " Who done it?!" Tom had me wishing that every father cared this much about their child. ❤ Gotta love Jake! I was very pleased with the ending. 1/2/21-1/3/21

Devoured this one pretty quickly- a very good, creepy suspense with some twists that make you realise the book isn't really about the abductions and murders at all.
I love the "sensitive" nature of Jake-the blurring of "reality" and the "supernatural".
There is something about a father and his boy that will always break and mend my heart....

Full disclosure, I only listened to this one because it was read by Christopher Eccleston (while not my favorite doctor, he is still in Doctor Who) 💚.

The narration was a bit stiff and there was no difference between characters/voices. It took me a minute to figure out whose perspective I was getting.

The mystery itself was good and I didn‘t see those twists coming. It was just the right amount of creepy.
