Is there a word for the feeling you get when you finish (or step away from) a really good book... and the real world doesn't seem quite so real? Where you're still so caught up in the story that everything feels slightly muted and far away? I don't think there's one in English, but there has to be one...
(The tagged book was great. Not as much science as Crouch's newer books, but the same edge-of-your-seat story.)
The entire town of Abandon vanished Christmas Day, 1893. In 2009, a group hikes up to the town to explore and look for clues, but things suddenly go in a different direction. Crouch builds the tension of both storylines side by side in this horror/thriller. I enjoyed it and had a true jaw-dropping moment near the end.
I'm so excited about this Crouch novel. I loved Recursion and Dark Matter by him, so I hope this one lives up to the hype.
I was a bit disappointed with this one, mainly because from the synopsis I was expecting a spooky horror whereas it is more a historical mystery. 3⭐️
Content: strong language, violence (some of it is graphic), & scenes of prolonged death.
I read Blake Crouch's Abandon via Kindle Unlimited based on my recent experiences with his books Dark Matter and Recursion (which I LOOOOVED). Abandon gains its title from the town in which it's set, and the book alternates between 1893, when it's a small but functioning gold-mining town, and 2009, when a small group returns to the town for a multitude of purposes. (continued in comments)
In 1893 a whole town disappeared leaving no trace of what happened. In 2009, a group of travelers will visit this town called "Abandon" each person has a different motive to visit it. Secrets, deception, treason, very graphic in violent scenes & if claustrophobia is your trigger I will not recommend this to you.End was from so-so to meh but I still enjoyed it, "ambition can take out the worse in people".3.75⭐️thanks @BookwormAHN #ScreamathonSwap
Although a good read I was disappointed that the plot wasn't what I thought. More of an action packed thriller than horror.
Tis the season for 🎃 bread even though Florida is still unbearably hot ☀️
A story set in the “Wild West” of how greed warps and twists human behavior and morality. The story takes place in the same town (Abandon) but flips back and forth from 1893 to 2009. I really liked how the plot and characters paralleled between the two periods, finding themselves in similar situations while also in the same geographic location.
I think this quote quite easily sums up the theme of this book so far...
Trying this one next for my fiction read. I‘m a little intimidated by the page count 😖
I‘m not a huge fan of some of the language and the body count in this book, but it was a good read. After reading some reviews both on Amazon and Litsy, I was nervous about the book itself - and the fact that it was over 500 pages. I was interested all the way through. There‘s nothing like history and a ghost town to spark my imagination - and Blake Crouch‘s too, apparently!
Well, this did turn out to be a little long, but it was also a very entertaining story, going back and forth from 1893 to 2009, telling similar stories about a ghost town called Abandon. Not really a thriller- I would say more horror, and quite a bit of gore if you‘re squeamish. But I have to say- I really liked it!
I started reading this because it‘s on my kindle app and I could read it in the dark. I‘m to the point where you think everything‘s about to wrap up. It has that “almost over” feel. I looked down at the page number and I‘m only a bit past halfway! What on earth can happen for another 250 pages?! It‘s been really good so far, but not sure it can drag on for that much more!
I didn't like this as much as Dark Matter but it was still a fast paced & entertaining read. I liked the two storylines & that few of the characters were wholly good or bad. Even the various villains had redeeming qualities- although pretty faintly in Isaiah's case. But it was more violent than I expected & I found it wearying. Still, overall, it's a pick for me.
Like last week I've only managed 1 book this week. New job takes up lots of time.
Horror!
Either if someone else makes them
Journals and pens and bags
Sweets
Spooky and cooky
Hair pins I guess?
Spooky journal!
Ok, #screamsbymail peeps: If everyone‘s doing it, I am too. 😉 Which of these would you have be pick? Any favourites? @ephemeralwaltz @kamoorephoto @Reggie @danibolahood @GatheringBooks @BookishTrish
Fast paced, creepy, thrilling stories both past and present about secrets and greed and the madness it inspires. A real pager unfolding what happened to a town that disappeared in the 1800s and the current quest today. A pretty violent account in the wilderness of Colorado‘s mountains.
On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote gold-mining town disappeared, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins—and not a single bone was ever found. two history professors and his journalist daughter are hired to lead them to the abandoned mining town so they can learn what happened. Recently, a similar party had also attempted to enxplore the town and was never heard from again. Now the area is believed to be haunted.
This is a creepy, constant action story set in a Colorado ghost town. It has danger, terror, tragedy, madness, survival, greed, and a fast moving story that will keep you guessing. What is does not have is good character development or strong motivations, but I was able to mostly overlook this and just enjoy the ride of the story. I didn‘t love the end. It seemed a bit rushed and not as well thought out as I would have liked. A fun read overall.
This book was not what I was expecting at all! I thought it was going to be more of a ghost story but it ended up being about very alive people and their destructive greed. I did enjoy the two timelines and how they are connected by the search for the same gold bars. Many chapters ended on cliffhangers which kept me listening to the audiobook. The narrator was good at altering his voice between the many different characters. 🌟🌟🌟
Right up my alley! Thanks again, @emilyhaldi ! #HalloweenGoesPostal #FallBookExchange
And my #Allhallowsreadbookexchange box!! 🙌🏽
Linda: LOVE LOVE LOVE. Great books and I'm a tea junkie - so this is so perfect and thoughtful! I don't see your handle listed anywhere on the card or box so please do give a shout-out so I can follow you 😄
Side note: great minds think alike bc This House is Haunted was in both of my boxes. I take full responsibility, I was probably overzealous in the questionnaire on my newfound love for Boyne 😂
Blake Crouch knows how to write a gripping thriller! I raced through this spooky tale an abandoned mining town and the #quest of two different generations to find a missing fortune in gold. I love how he was able to weave together two different stories taking place over 100 years apart.

After reading Dark Matter, I knew I needed more from Blake Crouch. This one fit the bill. An entire Californian gold mining town disappears on Christmas in 1893. Christmas feasts are left on the table, but every sign of life is gone. No bodies, no sign of any ailment or attack. It is a true mystery. As is typical for Crouch, this novel sets off at a fast clip, despite being almost 500 pages. #junetunz #gold
I'm so behind on my reviews! Been so busy lately. This was my first Blake Crouch; snagged it from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. Boy, was it intense! Interesting characters. It alternated between present day and 1893. I enjoyed the historical storyline more than the present day. I was expecting more of a supernatural vibe. But overall I liked it. #koll 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Abandon is the name of an - ahem - abandoned mining down deep in the mountains of Colorado. The story goes back and forth between 1893, leading up to when the town's residents disappeared; and 2009, telling the story of the expedition group exploring what remains of the town to figure out what happened. The parallels between the stories are wonderful, and there are several twists you won't expect. A seriously creepy, fun read. 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Starting this tonight. I really enjoyed Dark Matter, I have high hopes for this one!
Ok, it's official, I'm jumping on the Blake Crouch bandwagon! This being my second book of his, I think his books are solid thrillers that are thought provoking and very layered. This was a great story that involved an abandoned ghost town and also a modern day story line. It has mixed reviews on GR, and while I think it went quickly (427 pages in three days is fast for me), it could have been condensed a little bit. Great story.
When your 2 year old refuses to nap and crashes at 5pm. 😂😂 I just started this Blake Crouch. I wanted to try another one of his books after enjoying Dark Matter so much and an abandoned mining town from 1893 sounded appealing. Any other Crouch suggestions? Or if you've read this, please share your thoughts!
I am not sure what to rate this, I powered through because I wanted to see what happened which is good but the blurb on the back was a little misleadingly to the point where once I finished I wondered how I had missed something the blurb referenced. I really enjoyed the stories of the two timelines but was a little disappointed in the ending and realizing the book wasn't going to be what I thought. Unorganized thoughts, but there you are.
I lost a lot of sleep because of this book. It's a good thing I read it over a weekend. This chilling cat-and-mouse thriller gives new meaning to the phrase "history repeats itself". Abandon is a wild ride through the streets of an abandoned mining town and, once you start it, I dare you to put it down.
I really, really enjoyed Dark Matter so I'm on a quest to read more from Blake Crouch ... starting with this one.
I really liked this. I breezed right through it. The story is heartbreaking when you learn what happened to everyone.
Has anyone read this? Sounds interesting!
On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote gold mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left in vacant cabins - and not a single bone was ever found. 113 years later, two backcountry guides are hired by a history professor and his journalist daughter to lead them into the abandoned town. With them is a psychic and a paranormal photographer, as a party that explored the town, was never heard from again.
