Run LP: A Novel | Ann Patchett
64 posts | 99 read | 52 to read
Since their mother's death, Tip and Teddy Doyle have been raised by their loving, possessive, and ambitious father. As the former mayor of Boston, Bernard Doyle wants to see his sons in politics, a dream the boys have never shared. But when an argument in a blinding New England snowstorm inadvertently causes an accident that involves a stranger and her child, all Bernard Doyle cares about is his ability to keep his childrenall his childrensafe. Set over a period of twenty-four hours, Run shows us how worlds of privilege and poverty can coexist only blocks apart from each other, and how family can include people you've never even met. Suspenseful and stunningly executed, Run is ultimately a novel about secrets, duty, responsibility, and the lengths we will go to protect our children.

This is my 7th Patchett, and I have loved all but one of them (State of Wonder). This one read a bit like an Anne Tyler, another favourite author.
An accident is the catalyst for a story of grief, love and separated family. The novel takes place over 24 hours, with Ann embodying each character at different times to develop the story. Bravo 👏😭❤️

CarolynM Run is my favourite Patchett and State of Wonder my least favourite of the 5 I‘ve read. (edited) 3mo
LeeRHarry State of Wonder is my favourite, I bailed on Bel Canto, The Dutch House was a bit meh, have Tom Lake on my TBR. (edited) 3mo

I love Ann Patchett so much. This one was maybe not my favorite, but only because her others are outstanding. This is a quiet and ordinary book about families and tragedies and is just beautiful. A fast and satisfying read.

My first Ann Patchett! I absolutely loved this and wished it was longer. As others have said, this is a character driven novel - it‘s like you‘re dropped in to a 24 hour period to spend time with a family while they go through a life changing event. You get to know each of them, their worries, their frustrations, their love for each other - but you don‘t get to unpack all the whys and how‘s of how they got to where they are. ⬇️

Centique Instead you feel every moment of those 24 hours and how impactful they are for these characters. Just loved these characters and so enjoyed spending time with them. 2y
TrishB I loved this one too ❤️ 2y

Reggie I love her writing. I love the book with the oranges in the cover. Jeez I can‘t remember the name of it. Hope your‘e doing ok. I read a story about people still without power and looting. I saw in another post that you had power so I‘m glad for that. 2y
Centique @Reggie we‘ve been completely untouched by all of it so we‘re really lucky. The first floods were down the hill from me but only knew deep and only lasted a few hours, the latest storm and floods have hit 3 regions taking out roads and power (northland, Napier, Gisborne) but left Auckland alone. One valley that was full of homes is now like 8 feet deep in mud. Mind blowing! 2y

Ann Patchett's novels are character driven and this one had so many well-developed ones, I'm not even sure who the protagonist was. Behind many of the lives of the characters are secrets that not only made for some plot twists, it makes one wonder if we truly do know even the closest people in our lives.

I‘m always a little bummed when a friend recommends a book, I read it & am disappointed. The good news is in most cases, we still have good discussions. All of which is to say, a friend recommended this book & I didn‘t love it. The story never really seemed to get going & I just didn‘t connect with it. That being said, Patchett‘s writing is, as always, fantastic. So, the story gets a “So-so” for the great writing.

At the end of June I have finished 40 out of 80 books, so I‘m right on pace for that goal. Over the next few days I‘ll ponder where I am on the more specific goals.

Meanwhile, book 40 was Run, and I enjoyed it. I was feeling generous and gave it 4 stars for the writing and the story. A couple of the characters I wanted to slap.

Unique plot, family connections, and rich characters kept me engaged! Some (superfluous?) plot details were unresolved thereby creating an abrupt ending. Still a great read

This is a beautiful story with subtle take on politics, religion, race, and class. It examines family dynamics, love, and what ties them together. I like how Patchett writes each of the character‘s perspectives, how the backstory, secrets, and twists unfolds. Heartwarming.

Well this months #authoramonth started brilliantly!
I loved this, some sad bits, some very perceptive observations on poverty, race and privilege, but also some heart warming insights to family (or not) relationships. I really liked all these characters and that‘s very rare.

CarolynM Glad you enjoyed it🙂 She always does family well, but I was really impressed by how well she did the social commentary in this one. No preaching, just letting the situations speak for themselves. 3y

Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors, but this was not my favorite of her books. As always, the writing is beautiful, but it felt like there was way too much trying to happen in this novel, resulting in almost nothing happening in reality. I wish the characters had been narrowed and the focus had been tightened onto a few key ideas.

Ann Patchett has a way of making you fall in love with her characters, which makes it all the more devastating when there is a sudden, unexpected catastrophe right at the end (but that, in retrospect, you should have seen coming). Beautiful writing in this book as always. I also love the cover and the iridescent blue color on the inside flaps of the hardcover edition.
