Opposite of Always
Opposite of Always | Justin Reynolds
'One of the best love stories I've ever read.' Angie Thomas, bestselling author of The Hate U Give. From debut author justin a. reynolds comes The Opposite of Always, a razor-sharp, hilarious and heartfelt novel about the choices we make, the people we choose and the moments that make life worth reliving. Perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon and John Green. When Jack and Kate meet at a party, he knows he's falling - hard. Soon she's meeting his best friends and Kate wins them over as easily as she did Jack. But then Kate dies. And their story should end there. Yet Kate's death sends Jack back to the beginning, the moment they first meet, and Kate's there again. Healthy, happy, and charming as ever. Jack isn't sure if he's losing his mind. Still, if he has a chance to prevent Kate's death, he'll take it. Even if that means believing in time travel. However, Jack will learn that his actions are not without consequences. And when one choice turns deadly for someone else close to him, he has to figure out what he's willing to do to save the people he loves. 'Read this one, reread it, and then hug it to your chest.' Really cute Groundhog Day-style YA romance! Jack falls hard for Kate, but when she dies, he finds himself stuck in a time loop. Why? He thinks it‘s to figure out how to save her, but will he have to lose someone else close to him in order to do that?

My initial impression is that while I enjoyed the book, I‘m not sure I‘m the kind of reader that likes time loops or time travel. The story was still compelling. Particularly because the crux of the narrative lied with the characters.
The book was well-written. The main thing that annoyed me was how it was all very “insta-love” and I really am not a fan of that.

5✨ I could not put this down. I‘m not normally one that likes love can conquer all stories, but this Groundhog Day style love story was amazing. Not only was he reliving his love story, but the love for family and friends too. It was easy to follow. Each loop was different enough to keep you interested. Read for my hometown book club.

I really enjoyed my time listening to this, but I find that the further I am away from it, the less highly I think of it. It was very engaging and I really liked the main character, but I already don't think I can tell you how it ended! 'Charming' is I think the perfect word for this story. Less about the substance than how it makes you feel

I read this book during my slump and I‘m not sure if I didn‘t like it because I was slumping or if I didn‘t like it because it wasn‘t something that catered to me. Regardless, not a great read.

GondorGirl I felt the same way. It was... fine? Meh. 3y

This was exactly the book I needed to read. I love to do a contemporary fiction after finishing a fantasy series. Yes, there is some fantasy-ish vibes with the repeating time period, a la Groundhog Day, but Jack and Kate are adorable and I couldn‘t help touring for them in each variation. This is a book you‘ll want to hug at the end. Too cute!

My first DNF of the year and it's my #bookspin for January 😢 this book was on my TBR for a while, so I'm glad I gave it a try.. but it's not you, book! It's definitely my fault. My mind is all over the place and I can't find anything to catch my interest for more than few pages.

Thanks @TheAromaofBooks for everything 💕 now I go planning my list for February 📚📚

Jack and Kate meet at a party and their love story takes off. But then Kate dies and it should end there but Jack is sent back to the beginning, the moment they first met at the party. I‘ve read books similar to this and they can be redundant, going over the same scenes over and over again. But this author didn‘t do that. It was not redundant and every time Jack was sent back you got to experience a new memory and that was so magical.

Current read. I'm not sold on the time travel, try and save a sick girl premise, but Jack and his friends are funny and sweet so I'll keep reading. I think I'm getting too old for most YA books but my younger self would have fallen head over heels for this one.

Cedricsmom That‘s so true: we do outgrow certain genres of books. It‘s sad 😔 when it happens. 4y

This was such a fun YA book!

I absolutely loved the premise. The time loop aspect was so interesting. I liked how you saw the consequences to Jack‘s actions throughout every go around.

This book has one of the most exciting first chapters I‘ve read recently. Jack is stuck in time loop. It starts the minute he meets Kate at a party and ends when she dies 4 months later. Kinda of a Groundhog Day/ Butterfly Effect vibe. After Ch 1 there‘s about 130 pages where it reads like a typical YA romance as he completes the 1st cycle. It‘s not as fast paced as I anticipated, but still a fun read.

This was an energetic, humorous “Groundhog Day” type of story. I thought the author had a deft touch with dialogue. I recommend!

Would I read this again probably not, would I recommend it yes I would. It's a cute contemporary love story thats worth a read once through. Its predictability makes it not a spectacular read, but the characters made me want to finish it.

I rarely bail on books, and maybe it's just not the right time for this book for me personally, but it's so mediocre and boring. I just got to the first time travel moment, and it didn't add anything for me. I think I'm letting this one go.

4⭐⭐⭐⭐

BookNightOwl This story was fun, interesting and funny. I loved the characters and the time travel aspect. I loved the supporting roles of the parents and abuela. This book makes you think what if you could go back In time and change the way things were. It showed how things still might not come out the way you hoped and thought it would. 5y
BookNightOwl Con... I felt the book was A little long and some of the parts felt cheesy. Like the whole babe or some of the cussing was not for me. Either way
4⭐⭐⭐⭐ from me.

A boy finds himself reliving the four months from when he met his girlfriend to when she died. Each time he tries to save her.

Unpopular opinion. I didn't love the book. First, the MC is telling the story to the reader, so there are a lot of fourth wall breaks. Secondly, it's too 2019- there is FAR too much slang and references that aren't going to mean anything in 10 years. And so redundant!

It wasn't bad, just not great. 😕

CONT...

GondorGirl I did like how all the characters were PoC, and that the girlfriend has Sickle Cell, which primarily effects African Americans (it make me google the disease, and I now know WAY more about it then I did, which is a huge win). And I liked how the MC's relationship with his friends and family was also altered by his decisions. 5y

Literally decided to read this because my iPad was within reach and I didn‘t want to have to get up 😏 but sometimes being lazy has its rewards... I‘m reading an entirely delightful book which I probably would have otherwise completely forgotten that I‘d requested from the library (and it is annoying when the loan expires before I get to them)

Sweet love story told like Groundhog Day and Run Lola Run through several (five) recountings until the protagonist gets things right. I liked that it included friend group, not just love interest, discussions, and that the protagonist and almost everyone else in the story is a person of color. Very acceptable, thoughtful tale. 4⭐️: #WNDB #YA

This is a debut novel by the author and it is absolutely stunning. It is a story about love, friendship, family, and time-traveling, of course. What are the possibilities in front of you if you go back in time with a chance to alter the future? I had everything I want from a book – I laugh, I cry, got mad and annoyed. Liked it so much!
