The Pacific Crest Trail is one of the toughest hikes in the US. Running between the Canadian/US border at one end & the US/Mexico border at the other, it totals 2653 miles. Its terrain encompasses whole gamut between deserts & snow-logged trails, minimal signage, & the local wildlife includes rattlesnakes & bears. Still, many people try to thru-hike (travel from one end to the other) [continued]

OutsmartYourShelf or flip-flop (shuttle between stages depending upon the weather), & this book is about 3 of them.

During one year, 3 thru-hikers, Chris Sylvia, Kris Fowler, and David O'Sullivan set off along the trails. Hiking at different times of the years & at different stages, what they have in common is that they haven't been seen or heard of since. The author of this book details the search to find out what happened to these 3 young men.

OutsmartYourShelf I thought it was a really interesting read: a mix of the searches carried out, the truly lamentable state of official help for the missing (in one instance it has to be the missing person who applies to see the investigation files - now how is that supposed to work exactly?), & poignancy when thinking about the fact that, at present, we still don't know what happened to these men. 6h
OutsmartYourShelf Some reviewers don't like the fact that it's not a linear layout & the timeline skips around a bit, but that didn't affect my reading of it. I think it's really odd that 3 people who disappeared in one year have never been found yet other missing people have. One or those odd coincidences or more? 4🌟

Bookwormjillk I read this over the summer and thought that was odd too. But maybe it‘s because more people are hiking? 2h
CoffeeK8 I really liked the non-linear structure and agree it is weird none of them were found 45m

Started a new audiobook with The Beach Cafe by Lucy Diamond.

An enjoyable start so far and am enjoying the narrator and storyline, a feel good factor.

TheBookHippie I‘m so glad to see you post! As we head to holiday would be not the same without our food discussions on Christmas. I mean we have solved pancakes and bacon making and eating and this year I‘m excited for which we shall solve! 23h
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Thanks, been a difficult year, but what‘s the phrase, what doesn‘t kill us makes us stronger 🤷‍♂️ I wonder what this year‘s Christmas Day discussions will bring up. Always think of you now whenever I eat pancakes(with lemon and sugar of course). Might need to research food before Christmas 🤣 22h

From Below | Darcy Coates

Mehso-so

Cove & her dive team arrive at the place where the 'Arcadia' is said to have been rediscovered after sinking 60+ years before. Off-course & giving out strange emergency messages, the 'Arcadia' went down leaving no survivors & the mystery of what happens could now be solved by Cove & the others. They are heading down to depths rarely visited to film the wreck & look for evidence as to what happened, but no-one could ever dream of what awaits them.

OutsmartYourShelf Told in alternating chapters from both the present-day diving expedition & the final days of those onboard the ship, this should have been an absolute belter! All the ingredients were there but the end result was disappointing. How can a book simultaneously be both tense & yet drag? It seems an impossibility but 'From Below' manages it. 3⭐

1d
OutsmartYourShelf TW: there's a lot of talk about small spaces & the whole feel of the book is confined, so if you have claustrophobia, proceed with caution.

I can‘t say that I enjoyed this book—it made me both squirmy uncomfortable & angry in turns but it also was fascinating & made me think. Annie is a sentient robot or “Stella” in the book, created to be a “Cuddle Bunny” for & owned by Doug, an apparently well-to-do single man in his 30s. In this mentally abusive relationship, she struggles with her identity & understanding herself & human emotions. I found it to be an intriguing ⬇️

DebinHawaii … premise & a great debut novel & because it kept me turning the pages, I finished it this morning & put it on my #AuldLangSpine list because it makes for interesting thought & discussions about humanity. Trigger warnings for emotional abuse. 2d
Lesliereadsalot I thought this book really had something to say. Glad you liked it 🩷 2d

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

Read as one of my November #Roll100 picks (#8 Any #BOTM) I was sad when I heard Osman was detouring from writing his Thursday Murder Club series to start a new one but I need not have worried, this series has a similar style & humor & I have a feeling it will grow on me even more as it unfolds. As it was I had a blast with Amy, her father-in-law Steve & especially Rosie, a world famous author not just along for ⬇️

DebinHawaii …the murder-solving ride but is often driving the bus, or rather private jet. (And let‘s not forget Trouble the cat.) 🐈‍⬛ Finished last night, it ended up on my #AuldLangSpine list & I gleefully await the next book in this series which will come after a new Thursday Murder Club. 🤗 2d
Andrew65 I look forward to reading this, as you say he has got a new Thursday Murder Club book due out later next year. 2d

Started a new book, and I always enjoy books by Margaret Dickinson so hope to enjoy this. #ReadAway2024 @DieAReader @Ghabi4Roses

A palate cleanser after the crime books, the mysteries and the all-action thrillers.

DieAReader 🥳🥳 Not an author I‘ve heard of🧐 2d
Andrew65 @DieAReader Well worth exploring, she has written a LOT of books. Lighter reads, and a good palette cleaner after the books we read. https://www.fantasticfiction.com/d/margaret-dickinson/ (edited) 1d

#ReadAway2024

Finished belatedly for #Roll100 in September (#41 Any Book of Stories) I both read & listened to it, having been drawn to it as a #BOTM selection months ago. This is where #BOTM gets it right, selecting Diane Oliver, an author who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 1966 at just 22 with 4 stories published + 2 more posthumously. This collection is 14 stories & while not all of them were perfect, they are amazingly good & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …while she wrote about the black female perspective in the Jim Crow South in the 60s, they feel fresh & (sadly) still resonate today. It made me look up Oliver (here‘s a good article: https://bittersoutherner.com/feature/2022/the-short-stories-and-too-short-life-o... It was interesting to learn she was part of the Mademoiselle Magazine Summer Guest Editor program in 1964 which I read about in the book tagged below. ⬇️ (edited) 2d
DebinHawaii … Highly recommended, this will definitely make my Best of 2024 list. (edited) 2d
