Pet Sematary (Media Tie-In)
Pet Sematary (Media Tie-In) | Stephen King
Soon to be a major motion picture from Paramount Pictures starring John Lithgow, Jason Clarke, and Amy Seimetz! Stephen King's #1 New York Times bestseller Pet Sematary, a "wild, powerful, disturbing" (The Washington Post Book World) classic about evil that exists far beyond the grave--among King's most iconic and beloved novels. When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Despite Ludlow's tranquility, an undercurrent of danger exists here. Those trucks on the road outside the Creed's beautiful old home travel by just a little too quickly, for one thing...as is evidenced by the makeshift graveyard in the nearby woods where generations of children have buried their beloved pets. Then there are the warnings to Louis both real and from the depths of his nightmares that he should not venture beyond the borders of this little graveyard where another burial ground lures with seductive promises and ungodly temptations. A blood-chilling truth is hidden there--one more terrifying than death itself, and hideously more powerful. As Louis is about to discover for himself sometimes, dead is better...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ How does he do it? How does King make horror so human? The focus isn‘t fear, nor the horror elements, it‘s the people, and the mundanity of their everyday lives. The Terror lives on the periphery, waiting. A father enveloped in grief allows naiveté to take hold. Questionable decisions are made. “Sometimes dead is better,” honey. There are some conveniences in this plot, but they work. I‘m not mad about it.

Toured my first lumberyard today along with other activities on my work trip to Maine. Driving from Portland to the home office of the company we are visiting, we passed a couple of cemeteries & I couldn‘t help thinking about Stephen King & this #Graveyard novel. While it was written while King lived a couple of hours away in Orrington, as we dashed across a rural road from the offices to the yard, I thought of it even more! 🚛😱

Growing up, I remember going to our local movie rental place and seeing the cover of the Pet Sematary movie. It scared me.
Scary isn't the word I would use for the novel. It was horrifying, but not because of blood and gore and violence - though there is also that. What I found the most horrifying is the way it made me think of death, loss, and what makes us human.
BTW, Michael C Hall should narrate all creepy books. Perfect choice.

spookydoopy I finally picked this book up from a secondhand bookstore yesterday, so excited to read it!! 8mo

Well, that was indeed horrifying. Sad, rather than terrified now.
I have a renewed appreciation for what might be termed classic Stephen King. He managed a certain warmth, genuine, heartfelt moments, depth to characters and their relationships. And then he visited a parent's worst nightmare upon the characters and the reader is dragged through the slowly building dread of the consequences of some terrible but understandable decisions. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? There is fear, and anger and grief, as one would expect, encountering death, and it aches that much more for having spent quality time with this protagonist, with this family and friends, prior to tragedy striking. (Solid argument for indoor cats.) 14mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Main points that stood out to me:
Man trying to be a good father, while appreciating the appearance of a father figure in his adulthood, contrasted with abrasive father-in-law.
Variance in people's reactions, experiences with death, reconciling to the truth that death can be better than the alternative, than suffering, that it is natural.
Strain that patriarchy puts on men, toxic masculinity, this feeling like the 'man of the house' has to take on certain burdens, certain ugly tasks, assumption made without consulting female life partner, felt like a duty he would be ashamed not to be able to fulfill alone.
14mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Quite obviously, I hope a horror writer today would not choose to include an indigenous burial ground or figure from indigenous spiritual traditions as a plot point, nor some other unenlightened choices/statements made in this early 1980s book. I can't condone it, I can be only hope King also would not make the same decisions, writing today.

⚠️animal cruelty, animal death, child death, ableism

I really liked this book. So much social criticism related with rituals/ceremonies. The pain of that father was so intense, deep. Great character driven novel. I know, maybe an unpopular opinion but I really liked this one. My door to read SK books. The movies adaptations are garbage for me👎

I really haven‘t been participating in #scarathlon like I should be or usually do! This week has been hard…I‘ve been sick and stressed out about a new job I‘m going to be starting and pretty much couldn‘t concentrate on anything other than TV and audiobooks. But I‘m trying to get back into the swing of things and earn points for team #skeletoncrew ! Starting with these movies/tv shows I‘ve watched (I‘ve watched 5 episodes of Hill House).

1. The Descent: A group of young women go cave exploring and get lost in the extensive underground system. The less you know about this movie going in the better. It plays on fears of the darkness and claustrophobia.

2. The strangers: home invasion movies freak me out. I‘m more creeped out by stuff that can potentially actually happen than most supernatural movies

3. Pet Semetary: honestly watched wayyy too young, Zelda‘s what really got me.

kaykay521 It took me a bit to figure out three that actually freaked me out. I love horror movies and they usually don‘t bother me and if they do I don‘t make myself sit through them 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Certainly King‘s darkest book, but also his most poignant in a lot of ways. There‘s one passage, where Louis imagines Gage growing up, that‘s as heartbreaking and earnest as anything else he‘s written.

Definitely one of the creepiest books I‘ve ever read, but so so good. The long, well-maintained path into the dark woods to the Pet Sematary and the spaces beyond, the whispers along the way-terrifying. I loved it. There‘s a little madness in these characters. Stephen King writes madness so well. The audiobook was superb, narrated by Michael C. Hall.

A slow burn until it reaches its climax, Pet Sematary is a chilling take on the human condition in regards to death, sadness, and it‘s desire to cheat both. Like my prior King reads, the horror story isn‘t nearly as frightening as the prospect of our own human minds.

What remains to be said about a property as well-known as Pet Sematary? From my perspective, this is one of King's more gruesome submissions, wrapped as it is in a saccharine rendition of a loving family. We're made to fall in love with the Creeds ourselves over the course of the book, a love that makes the horrors lurking toward the end that much more horrifying. A special shout-out to Jud, who remains one of King's best side characters. 5/5
