A Journey to the Center of the Earth
A Journey to the Center of the Earth | Jules Verne
Jules Verne's A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) follows a German scientist who, with his nephew and an Icelandic guide, sets off on a scientific journey into the Earth's interior. The protagonists encounter lost races, new species of animals, and volcanoes, eventually returning to the surface in southern Italy. Now a major motion picture starring Brendan Fraser.

I DNF‘d Glory Over Everything- unfortunately this stoops a bit into melodrammmma (mellow DRAHma?) and I just can‘t. Cannot continue with the “OMG! Should I tell my truth OH NO! What if my secret is exposed?! OH MY!!”

Just. Can. Not.
So I found THIS in my audio library and . . . TIM CURRY!! 💗 It‘s SO good!! 😆🤩🥸

Looking back to all that has occurred to me since that eventful day, I am scarcely able to believe in the reality of my adventures. They were truly so wonderful that even now I am bewildered when I think of them.

🌟🌟being a huge fan of the old film, I think I like the ideas of Verne more than the actual books. This was a bit of a slog for me with unappealing characters.

Wonderfully read and an intriguing idea - Alex and his uncle, Professor Lindenbrock, journey to Iceland to descend into the mouth of the volcano with an aim to reach the centre of the earth. On their way, they discover a hidden world of prehistoric creatures.
I never read any of Verne‘s books but Tim Curry‘s performance brought this to life. A weak pick and I do wonder if I would have enjoyed the text as much.

Professor Otto Liedenbrock finds a message in a foreign language that he decodes. With the help of his nephew Axel he decodes the message. It translates to “Descend, bold traveler, into the crater of the jokul of Sneffels, which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the kalends of July, and you will attain the center of the earth; which I have done, Arne Saknussemm.”

anna.campmans Liedenbrock takes Axel with him to Iceland to find the crater. A man named Hans joins them as a guide of the country. After a few days of hiking, they reach the crater and begin their descent. They repel down until they reach the bottom where they begin their journey through an underground tunnel. Throughout their expedition underground the trio faces many hardships including lack of water, separation from one another, and being redirected... 2y
anna.campmans ...redirected through underground water channels. In the end, the group finds themself in an active volcano, which erupts and brings them to Stromboli. Some locals help them get on a boat and eventually they make it back to Germany. The professor spends the rest of his life being praised as a hero for his journey to the center of the earth, and Axel is reunited with his fiancée Gräuben. 2y
anna.campmans The novel is told from the perspective of Axel using a first person point of view. He tells of their journey afterwards by keeping a log of the details throughout. Verne establishes Axel‘s point of view through his usage of personal pronouns and through his opinions on other characters. 2y
anna.campmans Axel and Liedenbrock are the only characters present throughout the entirety of the book, and the reader can understand that Axel is telling the story instead of Liedenbrock because he often talks about his uncle Otto.

Though familiar with the story already, I listened to Tim Curry narrate this classic adventure and had so much fun listening!! For a book first published in 1864, it‘s still manages to inspire a great sense of wonder about the world. Maybe you can‘t cut through from beneath one volcano in Iceland to one in Italy in real life, but his idea of a hidden world has inspired so many other great novels! And the performance is second to none! Such fun!!

When I was a child, I read the Great Illustrated Classics (remember those?) version of “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” and I‘ve wanted to go to Iceland ever since!

#funfriYAY

DrexEdit My family had a ton of Classics Illustrated comics when I was young. I loved them. I just posted about them the other day, because I am pretty sure for most “classic“ literature I only have the comic version of in my head! 😄 Have I “read“ the Count of Monte Cristo? Um. . . Yes!? 😂 I have not read Journey to the Center of the Earth, comic book or otherwise, but Iceland would be a very cool place to visit! 3y
HappilyEverKrafter @DrexEdit We had this box of about a dozen little paperback illustrated classics! I‘m the same way, I have “read” several of the classics … in this version! 😂 3y

I had much success yesterday op shopping! I wasn‘t going to go to this op shop but the yellow, dot dress in the window caught my eye and it fit! Afterwards I took myself out to the sushi train for lunch. They didn‘t have my sparkling sake but they did have green tea ice cream. No strawberries though. It‘s always a bit of a hit or miss. The food is always divine. The art works at the bottom are for #Litsylove and #JustBecause correspondence. $41

The characters are a bit one-dimensional, but the fast-paced story makes up for it. This is the book that inspired me as a youngster to learn more about Iceland (and eventually get into Icelandic mysteries once they became available).

#30 #Journeys #LitstBitsy

I listened to this audio today. I read it before in 2015 and I loved it once again as it was full of excitement and adventure, with slight hints of humor and slivers of suspense. Verne is so creative and imaginative, yet so descriptive, that you feel as if you are there with the trio as they make their journey. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure.

Cuilin #30 journeys 👍 I‘ve only ever read Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, I‘ve always wanted to read this and 20,000 leagues under the sea. Thanks for the reminder. Stacked. 4y

I read Journey to the Center of the Earth as my #doublespin pick for March and also my classic adventure in my reading the classics challenge. I throughly enjoyed the adventure of the story maybe even better than Around the World in 80 days. If you are looking for a shorter classic to meet a challenge goal and like an adventure this would be an excellent choice.

TheAromaofBooks Even though I have read several other of Vernes's books - and enjoyed them - I've never gotten to this one! Definitely need to pick it up. Great review!! 5y

Visiting Snæfullsjökull next week, so I started rereading the paperback I've had since 1965. Went to look something up, and found that this was an inferior and abridged translation (left), in which the characters names had been changed, scenes left out, and other atrocities of literature. At long last reading the better translation (right) and enjoying it, which is as good as I'm going to get since my French isn't up to reading the original.
