It's Always Something (Anniversary, Revised)
It's Always Something (Anniversary, Revised) | Gilda Radner
16 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
To honor the twentieth anniversary of beloved comedienne Gilda Radner's death from ovarian cancer comes a commemo- rative edition of her memoir, It's Always Something--featuring a newly updated resource guide for people living with cancer and a tribute by Radner's former colleagues at Saturday Night Live. As a cast member on the original Saturday Night Live, Gilda Radner created a compelling character named "Roseann Rosannadanna" who habitually ended her routine with the line, "It's always something," which was her father's favorite expression about life. Radner chose the catch- phrase she made famous as the title to her brave, funny, and painfully honest memoir: the story of her struggle against cancer and her determination to continue laughing. Gilda's Club, a network of affiliate clubhouses that seeks to provide a social and emotional support community to people living with cancer, was founded in Radner's memory in 1991. The name of the organization comes from a remark Gilda once made, that cancer gave her "membership to an elite club I'd rather not belong to." In partnership with Gilda's Club, It's Always Something includes valuable information for all whose lives have been touched by cancer and reminds us of the important place laughter has in healing. Told as only Gilda Radner could tell it, It's Always Something is the inspiring story of a courageous, funny woman fighting to enjoy life no matter what the circumstances. She died in 1989. Gilda's Club is distinguished by its unique philosophy and pro- gram, "cancer support for the whole family, the whole time." Learn more about Gilda's Club at GildasClub.org.

I went outside this afternoon to put the recycling in the bin and discovered that my car window was shattered and my handicapped parking tag gone. Who does that?!? Even the insurance adjuster was disgusted.

In the process of cleaning up a thousand tiny pieces of glass, I came upon this lovely rock they must have used in the commission of the crime. They didn‘t take anything else. I‘m okay, just angry. 🤬

StaceGhost I‘m so sorry this happened to you! How awful. 2y

I‘m traveling for work—Aloha from Hawaii! (Although I‘m confined to the base.)

One of my fave quotes:

“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Delicious Ambiguity.”

Hooked_on_books Hmm, that looks like Oahu. Give a little wave to the southeast and I‘ll be waving back from the big island! 👋🏼 4y

I didn't plan on this being #abookandamovie weekend, but after last evening's Country Music, tonight the spouse and I watched "Love, Gilda" a wonderful movie about Gilda Rander's life. Now I want to read her autobiography (tagged).

DrexEdit For that matter I'd like to read Gene Wilder's autobiography also. 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved her so much. 😢 5y

DivineDiana @Leigh_Medeiros Thank you for your support. It seems as though your friend is receiving excellent care. 💗 6y
Leigh_Medeiros @DivineDiana Well, yes, but it's all self directed care that is more alternative and holistic because western options were only palliative. 6y
DivineDiana @Leigh_Medeiros Thankfully my friend is also open to alternative options. 🙏🏻 6y

(I‘m behind on posting because I was on a business trip!)

Gilda Radner was really something special. Her book, her story, is incredible and I‘m so glad she wrote it out for us. Is it weird to say I miss her?

#QuotsyApril18 | April 14: moment

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next.

I've mentioned her before. But hey, who could be more #garish than vintage SNL's boisterous broadcast journalist: Roseanne Roseannadanna? 😂

I went thrifting today #bookhaul number 1. Bookspan lectured at the conservatory when we were there, my husband's a big SNL fan, and we both live Sedaris.

I innocently started listening to this, looking for something to distract me while driving 3 hours for a big job interview, naively putting stock in the following line: a private, personal battle in which the humor & humanity that has touched millions became her most powerful weapon. I found myself laughing & crying while stuck in traffic & battling construction. All made even more poignant knowing that she narrated the audiobook in her last days.

Several days of Canadian internet woes have been resolved and made worthwhile by attending a live performance of Toronto's Second City Improv Comedy Group. We saw Tina Fey before SNL in Second City Chicago. Which future SNLers did we see here?

BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved Gilda! 8y
MemoirsForMe Gilda was amazing! I got to see her in NYC in "Gilda Live." 8y
Victoria_C I think Akroyd, Belushi, Murray, Newman, Eugene Levey from SCTV (Canadian). 8y

Tragically beautiful. This was an important and difficult read for me. I've lost a lot of family members to cancer, much like Gilda, and have faced my own reality that cancer is most likely in my future. Reading her story is inspiring no matter what. 5/5

From the back of the dust jacket. Gilda with her husband, Gene Wilder on the day of their wedding, in France. They're adorable! I don't know much about her, but I'm excited to read her memoir.
