Salem Falls
Salem Falls | Jodi Picoult
When Jack St. Bride arrives by chance in the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls, he decides to reinvent himself. Tall, blond, and handsome, Jack was once a beloved teacher and soccer coach at a girls' prep schooluntil a student's crush sparked a powder keg of accusation and robbed him of his reputation. Now, working for minimum wage washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, Jack buries his past, content to become the mysterious stranger who has appeared out of the blue. With ghosts of her own haunting her, Addie Peabody is as cautious around men ad Jack St. Bride is around women. But as this unassuming stranger steps smoothly into the diner's daily routine, she finds him fitting just as comfortably inside her heart - and slowly, a gentle, healing love takes hold between them. Yet planting roots in Salem Falls may prove fateful for Jack. Amid the white-painted centuries-old churches, a quartet of bored, privileged teeage girls have formed a coven that is crossing the line between amusment and malicious intent. Quick to notice the attractive new employee at Addie's diner, the girls turn Jack's world upside down with a shattering allegation that causes history to repeat itself - and forces Jack to proclaim his innocence once again. Suddenly nothing in Salem Falls is as it seems; a safe haven turns dangerous, an innocent girl meets evil face-to-face, a dishwasher with a Ph.D. is revealed to be an ex-con. As Jack's hidden past catches up with him, the seams of this tiny town begin to tear, and the emerging truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray.

I have finally finished my twelfth book of #lockdown this one took me so long as I‘m finally back to work and I was struggling to get a routine back, I‘m happy to say I‘ve finally managed it and read the last half of the book so much faster. I enjoyed the book a lot and it definitely wasn‘t what I was expecting from reading the blurb. I‘ve read a number of Jodi Picoult books before and although this isn‘t a personal favourite I did like it

My goal for this year was to read 12 books - 1 book for each month, and today I met that goal so I have upped my goal to 17 books in the year. I am so proud of myself that I have achived this personal goal for myself. I have always loved reading, since I was a child, but in the last few years I have been lacking, and the last couple of years have been difficult so reading was pushed to the side. Let's see how many more I can read by Dec!

I really wasn't sure about this book at first, it was sort of slow and I couldn't remember who each character was. But eventually it became so captivating I could not wait for my breaks at work to read it!

In true Jodi Picoult fashion a controversial topic is woven into the lives of some interesting characters...think high school teacher, witches, rape victims, drunks & small town drama. Unlike so many of her books, Picoult added explicit sex scenes in the love story portion, but should have left them to the reader's imagination...those passages aren't her finest writing.

seaves582 I agree!! I wanted to like this book and I just couldn‘t. 5y

Over the years, I have read several Jodi Picoult books, and Salem Falls continues to be one of my favorites.

Jack is new to town and trying to start over but one morning that opportunity is shattered when a teenage girl accuses him of something terrible.

As likable as Jack is, and as much as we want to trust the main character, we quickly find out this is not the first time he‘s been accused of something by a student...

Five solid stars !

wordzie Sounds really good 6y

I am dnfing this one for now. I thought I would need a break from fantasy after finishing The Wicked King before jumping into A Court of Thorns and Roses. However, after reading about 100 pages or so in Salem Falls I realized I was wrong. Also, to be fair it is out of my reading comfort zone so it could have been contributing to my disinterest. The writing is very good. It‘s just not what I am in the mood for at the moment.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads Have you read other Jodi Picoult? 6y
wildwoodreads @Joyfulmimi I haven‘t! This is my first. 6y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I know a lot of folks like her but I have not enjoyed her books. @megzlynn That‘s why I asked. ☺️ 6y

wildwoodreads @Joyfulmimi Romance just is not my cup of tea. While it does have other plot elements it still remains a romance. I used to love them but I guess I just got tired of them. 6y
Maggie_Reads I loved the book but I‘m not a fan of fantasy so yeah, not everyone is going to like the same books. 6y
wildwoodreads @Maggie_Reads I enjoyed what I read of it. I am just very much a mood reader. If I don‘t read what I‘m in the mood for I loose interest. I have put down books not being in the mood for them and then pick it up later and love it. 6y

Bailedbailed

I'm about 180 pages into it and... meh. I am indifferent at best towards the characters, and some I really can't stand. I went through a big Jodi P phase a few years back, but my last 2 have been bails. Tastes change, I guess! On to something I'm more excited about!

Foxyfictionista I've never been able to get into her books. To be fair, I've only tried one or two though. 8y
slhbooks I read this many years ago. It must have disappointed me enough to keep me from reading any more JP. I do however have her most recent book on my TBR. Here's hoping😉 8y
DeborahSmall I read a few about 8/9 years ago and thought the first I read was great but her writing was very 'samey' in every book imo, she started to bore me. But I have her most recent in my Amazon basket...still not a priority so haven't checked it out, but it's had good reviews here 8y
Reagan Yeah, I read a bunch but every plot is basically the same. I vetoed reading any more by her earlier this year. I support this bail! 8y
GlitteryOtters I find her work very hit-or-miss, with some very hard bails. I've moved away from reading her work because I have had too many bails with her recent work. Part of it is being bored by her characters, part of it is not being able to relate to so many of her very privileged characters' worldviews, and part of it is just very rushed writing that seems like she didn't take enough time to fully flesh out her story. 8y
