A thrillingly original story of the adventures of a small band of feral cats in Delhi who communicate by whisker mind-link, and face an unprecedented threat to their tribe's survival; for readers of Life of Pi and Philip Pullman. In the labyrinthine alleys and ruins of Nizamuddin, an old neighbourhood in Delhi, India, lives a small band of cats. Miao, the clan elder, a wise, grave Siamese; Katar, loved by his followers and feared by his enemies; Hulo, the great warrior tom; Beraal, the beautiful queen, swift and deadly when challenged; Southpaw, the kitten whose curiosity can always be counted on to get him into trouble... Unfettered and wild, these and the other members of the tribe fear no one, go where they will, and do as they please. Until one day, a terrified orange-coloured kitten with monsoon green eyes and remarkable powers lands in their midst--the first in a series of extraordinary events that threatens to annihilate them and everything they hold dear. The Wildings is a gorgeous evocation of Delhi, a love paean to cats and a rich, often savage tale of survival and conquering one's fears.

#BookReport - Started this week still in a bit of a book slump, and none of these books felt right. I read another P&P variation that was decent, then picked up How to Save Your Child... eh... Watership Down... eh... The Underground Railroad... eh... Finally picked up the tagged book, which I've had from the library for a while, completely anticipating another eh... but instead was totally drawn into that weirdly engaging tale. Somehow, ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) finishing that one made me feel more like reading again. I read Lucky Caller by Emma Mills (also from the library and not on my pile haha), am over halfway through How to Save Your Child, and am also reading Summer by the Tides. I think I'm done trying to read Whitehead, though, his style just isn't really for me, and I am not in the mood for sad books. Taking his books off my mental pile made me feel better about tackling what was left. 5y
BookishMe 👍🏽👍🏽 I felt similarly about Whitehead's recently acclaimed books. I am figuring out his style with his debut which is definitely less intense than TUR) 5y
See All 18 Comments
BookishMe *TUR, also my initial choice 5y
Cinfhen Ugh.....I know all about book slumps 😥hope yours improves 5y
Buechersuechtling @TheAromaofBooks 👋🏼 I am completely with you as far as taking books off my pile or wish list at my library. I just recently did so, and completely relate to the good vibes this gives. Sometimes I catch myself wondering how some titles ever made it on my various stacks of unread books. I look at their title/summary and ask myself why and when I chose it. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @BookishMe - my goal was to read two books for each #authoramonth, but I just don't think his books are for me, at least not right now. I have a lot going on, and when I'm stressed, I'm not interested in reading seriously-toned books, if that makes sense. I need humor and happy endings!!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - Thank you!! I think this one is working its way out. Sometimes I get really hung up on reading the next book on my list no matter what, and have to remind myself that this isn't for a grade or anything, so it's okay to skip as needed! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Buerchersuechtling - I have a giant spreadsheet that is my main TBR, and it had over 1000 books on it at the beginning of 2018. It took me about two months, but I went through every book on it and read the synopsis on Goodreads and culled tons of them off - down to around 400 - and I've been trying to be more selective about adding them since then. There just isn't time for everything!!! Also, I keep meaning to ask you what your username means?? 5y
BookishMe May your choices bring you the needed-reprieve... Hopefully this stressful stretch comes to an end soon 5y
BookishMe @Buechersuechtling ikr! And I have stopped adding titles to my GR to-read shelf (not that that stopped me from seeking out new titles ;)) I too am trying to rid of titles that no longer I interest me 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks I have been wanting to remove ALL the titles on the GR to-read, refresh and be more discerning. Wonder when I'll take the plunge, if at all 😑😑 5y
Cinfhen Yes!!! We need to be kinder to ourselves ❣️❣️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks @BookishMe - wow, that would be an amazing undertaking!! I don't really use GR for to-read books, but I have thought about dividing my spreadsheet by the year that I added books, and then every year look at the ones from five years ago - is there a reason they are still there after all this time?? LOL it is easy to get out of control! 5y
BookishMe @TheAromaofBooks l marvel at maintaining a spreadsheet for books even though it makes perfect sense! I can still recall how intoxicating it can be, to get out of control. I think I have moved past that now 😊😊 5y
Buechersuechtling @TheAromaofBooks Having so much books to be read would make me nervous. I‘m currently counting between 60 and 70 and that‘s sailing close to the wind for me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Buechersuechtling @TheAromaofBooks Okay my username. It‘s an invented German word set together of “books” (“Buecher” since there are no umlauts on Litsy) and an invented word concerning an addict. “Süchtig” – there‘s the umlaut again – means “addicted” but I wanted to diminish the person who‘s addicted. Like in “Little Thumpling“. That‘s why I invented “Suechtling“. So, in the end it‘s a partly thought out term to express “Little Book-Addicting” in German. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Buechersuechtling - I knew it was something German-ish but wasn't sure how it all came together haha I love it!! 5y

Pickpick

No pic since my phone is on the fritz (sigh) -

I've been in a bit of a book slump the last couple of weeks, so I picked up this one with virtually no anticipation of finishing it. I was pulled almost unwillingly into the story, though - a clan of stray cats living in India is disturbed when a Sender appears in their midst, as legend says that Senders only appear during times of great need - and everything seems to be going well for the clan ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) At first this book was a little difficult to get into, but soon I was completely engaged in the characters, the setting, and the plot. While the animals in this story talk to one another, they still act completely like animals, and I don't think you have to particularly like cats in order to appreciate the complexity of the animal society the author creates. An unexpected pick, and weirdly a book that has drawn me back into reading. 5y
TheAromaofBooks Challenges: #Jennyis30 - Cats (obviously haha) @jenniferw88 || #TurningPagesBingo - Diverse Author || #BackwardsAtoZ - No R 5y
effani I really liked this one too! Glad it helped get you out of your slump. 5y
See All 6 Comments
TheAromaofBooks @effani - apparently there is also a sequel, which my library doesn't have, but I enjoyed this one so much that I hunted around and found it used for $6 on AbeBooks!! 5y
effani Nice find! I've heard the sequel isn't as good but I've still been meaning to read it. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @effani - I appreciated the way she concluded the first story, but left enough things open that a sequel could be purposeful. We'll see how it goes!! 5y

What a delightful magical read! It's about a clan of cats in Delhi whose lives are disrupted by a very powerful very young kitten who can send her thoughts and emotions out far and strong. I loved how each cat was so distinctive and had such great personalities.

rubyslippersreads I always give in! 😹😹😹 7y
Mimi28 @rubyslippersreads Me too!! I have to regulate their feeding times but I think I fed them at about 4:30 am and then at 12 pm, and they ate a little dry food in between, but it was 7:30pm and I couldn't resist that look. I am going to have to make it like 6 am and 3 pm or something, lol. Or it's fine, I'll just buy more cat food, lol 7y

LauraBeth Still looks hungry - feed that baby! 😻😹 7y
Mimi28 @LauraBeth You're right!! She eats very slowly. She will take a few bites and walk away like she is just snacking or has to give her stomach a rest. I have to put the plate back in front of her like 3 times or the 18 year old will eat it all because she ravages into her food all the time. Then Stormy will be hungry like 3 hours later because the 18 year old ate it all. She's sooo cute though!! 😻😻 7y

I'm happy I let my daughter talk me into reading this one. It had humour and sadness and edge-of-your-seat action. A story centred around the stray cats of Delhi, but also featuring several other animals (humans only appear as sensory deficient "bigfeet"). The story is self-contained, but there's a sequel that follows directly on. I'm looking forward to it! No arm twisting needed. (Authors take note: This is how it's done, not with cliffhangers!)

I only managed to get through half of Wildings last night. We solved it by explaining to the librarian who let us check it off on the summer reading challenge for my daughter, but keep it so I can finish it too. I also came away with the final Canesville book (Yasss!) and The Bell Jar.
My daughter is miffed that someone else had the sequel to Wildings and she has to wait until Tuesday! She consoled herself with Kid Normal for the wait.

Leniverse And looking at Kid Normal I guess that's another one for the #heroes prompt! 7y

My daughter just finished this book this evening. She really, really wants me to read it so we can talk about it. She also wants to return it to the library tomorrow so that she has completed their summer reading challenge. 🙄 I think her faith in my reading superpowers is flattering but rather inflated. It's 300+ pages of tiny print. 😆 I guess I'm staying up late tonight.

LibrarianRyan I love your daughter. I'm mailing her a book this weekend. Thanks for the suggestions for my traveling book. 7y

Realizing the sources of my neck pain and headaches... I am always laying at a weird angle because there is a cat on top of me and/or I am straining to see my phone. I never wear my glasses while I am laying down either, because I don't want to fall asleep and break them and they hurt the bridge of my nose when I am on my side. I have bad astigmatism and should be wearing my glasses ALL my waking hours. There are also books and cats in my bed lol

Mimi28 Been feeling icky today today too so I have been in bed a lot without my glasses on. Headaches or broken glasses? Can't win to lose, lol. Eye strain is REAL!!! 8y

Mimi28 @cariashley Thanks! I think this is a sinus/ allergy thing. I'm about to take some sinus/ allergy alka-seltzer. The cats were really aggravating me I had to kick them out of my room, lol.
