Vansa I read Paradise Lost just this year! It was surprisingly deeply compelling and very very readable 2y
JuliaTheBookNerd @Vansa I read it like 15 years ago in my British Literature class and loved it. I want to give it a reread just for fun though… someday 😬 2y

I finished reading this yesterday. Had some difficulties figuring out some pronunciations and I‘m not familiar with a good number of the references Milton made, but it was still an enjoyable read! I can see why it‘s said to be one of the greatest works of English literature. I would love to take a course on Milton to understand this poem better and found reading A Preface to Paradise Lost helped me. I feel I really ought to give this 10/10

Suet624 This is a book I always say I‘m going to read and then I forget about it. 5y
Argon Haha, yeah it was on my reading list for about 5 years after I read part of it for a class. Glad I finally got around to it! 5y

I might pull this one off the shelves and read it next month. It has been on my TBR for way too long. And I've already read The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, so this is definitely the next step.

Described as one of the greatest epic poems in the English language, Paradise Lost tells the story of the Fall of Man, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny.

A first edition of Paradise Lost (1667) still in its original binding and with a manuscript inscription from contemporary Poet Laureate John Dryden ?
"Three Pets in the distant Ages born
Greece, Italy, and England did adorn.
The First in loftiness of thought surpass'd
The Next in Majesty, in both ye Last
The Force of Nature could no farther go;
To make a Third, she joyn'd ye former two.

Today we drove over an hour to Books A Million to spend our gift card we got for Christmas ? It was so much fun and of course really, really hard to decide what to buy. In the end this was our haul plus two books for the kids: The Day the Crayons Went Home and The Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Shark.

The guy at the checkout was amused by our choices, "In the mood for some 'light' reading I see" ?

A bit of light reading for my dissertation.
I know a lot of people can't read this book and I struggled a lot too, but once you get used to the language and the rythm, it is an incredibly beautiful piece of art. Would totally recommend, even if it is tiring!

Tdumatrait Love that this will come to television. I have always loved Milton. I teach an abbreviated version to my 8th graders every year. 7y
JoeStalksBeck @Tdumatrait me too! I love him but I adore Dante. I wish they would do an accurate account of The Divine Comedy 7y
Tdumatrait @JoeStalksBeck it would be interesting to see dueling networks but each on TV. I think Dante would be more relatable to a teenage audience. Older generations and younger generations would probably go for Milton. My high schoolers always preferred Dante to Milton. Guess they would rather pick their poison. 7y

This morning Mr. Postman brought me this book. It was from Amazon... I rarely buy books from them, so I was surprised. I checked my email to check if I had ordered it (I order so many books...), but nothing. Then, I remembered a conversation I had with a dear friend of mine during which I told her I had not yet read this book...
