How to Be a Domestic Goddess
How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking | Nigella Lawson
29 posts | 15 read | 15 to read
Nigella Collection: a vibrant new look for Nigella's classic cookery books. 'This is for those days or evenings when you want to usher a little something out of the kitchen that makes you thrill at the sheer pleasure you've conjured up.' The classic baking bible by Nigella Lawson ('Queen of the Kitchen' - Observer Food Monthly). This is the book that helped the world rediscover the joys of baking and kick-started the cupcake revolution, from cake shops around the country to The Great British Bake Off. How To Be a Domestic Goddess is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. Here is the book that feeds our fantasies, understands our anxieties and puts cakes, pies, pastries, preserves, puddings, bread and biscuits back into our own kitchens. With luscious photography, easy recipes, witty food writing and a beautiful hardback design, this is a book you will treasure for many years as well as a delicious gift for friends and family. Cakes - from a simple Victoria Sponge to beautiful cupcakes Biscuits - macaroons, muffins and other indulgent treats Pies - perfect shortcrust and puff pastry and sweet and savoury recipes Puddings - crumbles, sponges, trifles and cheesecakes Chocolate - luscious chocolate recipes for sharing (or not) Children - simple recipes for baking with kids Christmas - pudding, Christmas cakes, mince pies... and mulled wine Bread - finally, the proof that baking bread can be fun, with easy bread recipes The Domestic Goddess's Larder - essential preserves, jams, chutneys, curds and pickles that every cook should have

Anyone else being a baking goddess today?I just made (and ate) some yummy banana bread. Nigella is a favorite of mine. I can't believe I haven't been in this cookbook in years. Shame on me.

(I also just dyed pink tips in my hair. It is not good when I am left to my own devices.😁)

TheAromaofBooks I made some brownies - from a box, I'll admit - that I definitely need to put away since we keep snacking every time we walk through the kitchen! 😂 5y
TheLibrarian Love banana bread! No baking for me because I‘m rationing my sugar and flour. Hard to find in the store! 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig I have that Cookbook! I should revisit! 5y

hilded I also baked banana bread today, it was delicious 😋 5y
RainyDayReading I think I‘m going to be making cookies today 😅 I‘ve been watching the great British baking show and now all I want to do is bake but I don‘t have half the ingredients or the equipment so cookies it is! 🤣 5y
Heretherebedragons I think both the baking and the hair were excellent decisions :) I too made a foray near my oven yesterday, but alas the dough hath not risen (yet). Too little yeast, mayhaps. Attempt no. 2 tonight (?). (edited) 5y
BethM I made banana bread last week and am making bread pudding tonight. I need this cookbook! Hope you‘re well friend. 5y
Avanders I‘ve baked 1 night out of the past ~30. I need to make it more of a priority..... 5y

My first puff pastry! I love Nigella! I felt I was folding forever - I think I‘ve actually got 730 layers!

AmyG Wow. Can you sen me a piece???? Looks delicious. ❤️ 5y
squirrelbrain Ooh I can see lots of lamination there! (No idea what that means - they say it on Bake-Off and it‘s a good thing in puff pastry! 🤣) Better than a soggy bottom anyway.... 5y
Mitch @squirrelbrain hahaha - I gave myself a handshake! 5y

I thrifted a mini Madeleine tin yesterday, so I finally got to make the Rosebud Madeleines from the tagged book!

They were delicious and had a wonderful mouth feel, but I‘ll have to tinker with the recipe. Nigella says one should only butter, not butter & flour, the tin, which gave me nicely humped Madeleines with no definition on the pattern side. Blah. I floured the second batch and got slightly better definition but no humps. Hmmm.

BehindthePages New batches of cookies means more to taste test though ;) 5y
xicanti @Letora this is true! They‘ve got hardly any ingredients, too, so they‘re not a drain on resources. The only issue is how long the dough needs to sit before it goes into the moulds: one hour in the fridge, then half an hour on the counter. 5y

I listened to a big chunk of HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE while I baked one of the great mysteries of my culinary life: Nigella Lawson‘s cranberry cake. It‘s delicious, and it never looks anything like the picture because the cranberries always float up into the batter.

I think Canadian cranberries must be much lighter than the UK kind. The recipe says 6oz = 3/4 cup, but I‘ve found it‘s more like 2+ cups. #audiobaking

xicanti PLUS SIDE: because the cranberries float up, the cake forms a seriously good sugar crust. Everyone I‘ve ever served it to loves it. 5y
brilliantglow Yumm! I'm going to have to try this 5y

#FALLISBOOKED - Day Seven #FAVOURITEFALLTREAT I rarely bake, but Autumn is a time for stodgy puddings; so Nigella‘s decadent version of a bread and butter pudding, using pain au chocolat is perfect.

1. Something that shows me how to look at life differently, even while making me feel like I'm not alone.
2. Do notebooks and pens count? Coz... Pretty sure I could open a stationery shop over here.
3. The tagged book, not so much for the recipes but for the way that Nigella writes. Pure aesthetic and sensory pleasure in food.
4. Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Fernando Pessoa

My mum asked me to do my grandma's trifle for Christmas dinner. It calls for two store-bought sponges, but none of the grocery stores around here sell them anymore so I had to make them instead. It gave me a chance to start A CHRISTMAS CAROL while I finally, finally tried Nigella Lawson's Victoria sponge recipe. #audiobaking

There are a few quick recipes here.

A book when you #ForgotYouHaveToBake.

#SurvivingDecember @writerlibrarian

Kaye Well DARN. I thought I was already a domestic goddess. I am lucky to have a husband who says “Good Supper” every night, whether I make Turkey dinner with all the trimmings or Beanie-Weenies with a side of Ho-Hos for dessert. 7y
julesG @Kaye Don't worry. We do not have to cook like Nigella. My family is very happy with what I can make from scratch. 😉 I got this book from a friend together with a Sophie Kinsella novel 7y
Kaye I used to do a lot more cooking when the family was all still home. I baked a lot and made bigger dinners. Now that it‘s just the 2 of us I don‘t make as much. I had no idea how to cook when we got married Betty Crocker was my daily companion. My husband gained 100 lbs the first year we were married 😮 @JulesG (edited) 7y
julesG @Kaye Better than losing weight because of your cooking. 7y

I was flipping through HOW TO BE A DOMESTIC GODDESS on my way to the mince tarts recipe when I realized I'd never made her cappuccino cupcakes. So I whipped up a batch, and unfortunately this has emerged as one of the few Nigella recipes I dislike. I'm actually glad it only made 8 instead of the 12 it was supposed to.

I'll spread the other 7 around to a few people. Hopefully they'll like the flavour more than I do.
