Armada / Armed | Ernest Cline
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION From the author of Ready Player One, a rollicking alien invasion thriller that embraces and subverts science-fiction conventions as only Ernest Cline can. Zack sees a flying object, an alien ship just like the one in the video game he plays every night: a very popular multiplayer game called Armed, in which players protect the Earth from extraterrestrial invaders. No, Zack has not gone mad. Believe it or not, it's very real. The skills of those millions of players will be needed to save the Earth from what is to come. "A thrilling coming-of-age story." --Entertainment Weekly "An amazing novel [that] proves Cline has the ability to blend popular culture with exciting stories that appeal to everyone."--Associated Press "Mixes Star Wars, The Last Starfighter, Independence Day and a really gnarly round of Space Invaders into a tasty sci-fi stew." --USA Today "A fantastic second novel...fans of Ready Player One, it is time to rejoice." --Huffington Post ""Hugely entertaining...a paean to the videogames of a bygone era, and like Ready Player One it is a tremendous amount of fun for anyone who remembers that time and played those games."" -George R.R. Martin, New York Times bestselling author of Game of Thrones "With another winning teen protagonist in Zach, Cline mines the nostalgia and geek spheres just as successfully as he did in his acclaimed debut, Ready Player One. The works that obviously influenced the story line, such as Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and the films The Last Starfighter and Star Wars, feel like homages rather than borrowings- a rap artist sampling the best beats our there to create an irresistible jam." --Library Journal, starred review "Cline once again brings crackling humor and fanboy knowledge to a zesty, crowd-pleasing, countdown-clock, save-the-planet tale featuring an unlikely hero, adrenaline-pumping action, gawky romance, and touching family moments....Cline's sly, mind-twisting premise and energetically depicted and electrifying high-tech battles make for smart, frenetic, and satisfying entertainment." --Booklist, starred review"

A fast-paced, humor-filled adventure with great popular culture references. The last half became a bit too much. Too many characters with too much happening for very strange reasons. Fun but not my cup of tea.

mcctrish I still haven‘t read this, everyone I know who liked Ready Player One wasn‘t as thrilled with this one 1y
RamsFan1963 It's not horrible, I gave it a pick, but in a lot of ways it feels like a retread of Ready Player One. I'd say it's about as good as Ready Player Two, which I didn't like as much as the first one. 1y

Catching up on beach reading reviews! Honestly, this book felt like Mary-Sue fan fiction. After all, it's the ultimate wish fulfillment - protagonist Zack finds out that his favorite video game is real, and his gaming skills are needed to defend the earth! Basically, the reliance on 80s and sci-fi tropes that worked so well in Ready Player One just feel like clichès here, and it feels like Cline can only write one kind of protagonist.

I‘ve had this on my list for a while. It is very similar to a movie I‘ve seen before. I‘m not sure which came first and there was surprises I wasn‘t expecting, but it wasn‘t as unique as I was hoping.

It was as expected. If you have read Ready Player One it is like that mixed with Ender‘s Game. Heavy on the 80s pop culture with the idea of using video games to train unsuspecting kids to go up against an alien invasion. Good read. It had a few more emotional threads than i remember being in Ready Player One. But definitely a good quick palate cleanser after a heavy book

This is to clear my head after the last book. A little bit of light alien ready before figuring out what the weekend read will be! Plus, its ready by the super nerd who somehow became famous Wil Wheaton. (Stand by me is obviously left out of that quandry)
I really enjoyed Ready Player One, though the writing was not the best. Have Ready Player Two on hold at the library.

LibrarianRyan I really enjoyed listening to this on audio. I actually enjoyed it more than RPO on audio because I wasn't hunting for little clues (even thought I listened to RPO after I had already read it). 4y

Pretty sick.

I admit I was lost for a few moments three quarters of the way through because I thought there were serious issues with the plot, but then I figured out what was going on—that there wasn‘t anything wrong—and I fell right back into the story again.

Cline just has a prose style that makes it so dang readable. I love the world building here (top notch), love the adventure, and the sheer cinematic feel of it. Can‘t wait for the movie.

I really enjoyed this book. Loved that it was narrated by one of my sci-fi favorite character from Star Trek. It is a great story and I am going to have to limit what I say so as not to give away stuff. I am hoping that Mr. Cline is writing books two as we speak because it is not complete in my humble opinion. Loved it still.

The first third of this book was way too heavy on the video game aspect at the expense of character development. As I'm not into video games I was bored. It does start to pick up after that and I did mostly enjoy the story but I think (as I rarely do!) that this would be better as a movie. I also think it suffers by comparison to his first novel, Ready Player One.
All in all not wonderful but not too bad for my April #bookspin

Slightly less awesome than Ready Player One, which is OK because it's its own thing. I was still mightily entertained. I'm still thinking about the ending (not sure I'm all in on that). I love, love, love Wil Wheaton narrating Cline's books!

This was definitely a 5-star. I was pretty mad for about 50% of the book because it seemed the same as Ready Player One, but...Then the plot really kicked into high gear, and I was floored. I was also very emotionally invested and SO SAD for the sacrifices that had to be made to ensure that the human race wasn't destroyed. I feel for Zach...

⭐⭐⭐
This book seems to be a love letter to science fiction. Story-wise it was just ok, with a predictable plot and characters who are somewhat one dimensional. I think the strongest aspect of it is the fun factor from all the references - most of these I didn't get, to be honest. Overall, it was mildly entertaining, but a bit disappointing if you compare it to Ready Player One - which had a much stronger plot.

BookwormM Damn I loved Ready Player One was looking forward to this 6y
Traci1 @BookwormM well, you might like it more than me. I didn't think the story was as good as RPO, but mostly I felt like so many of the references were for games, shows, and movies I know nothing about. If I were more knowledgeable about that stuff, I think I'd have liked it a lot more. As it is most of it just went over my head. 6y
LibrarianRyan I found this was much more fun to listen to than to read. @bookwormM. It's read by Will Wheaton. 6y
Traci1 @LibrarianRyan I love Wil's narration, so I imagine it is much better on audio. It wasn't bad anyway. Just not as good as RPO to me. 6y
