Definitely one of the most WTF books I‘ve ever read (and I‘m a huge Palahniuk fan saying that!)
Definitely one of the most WTF books I‘ve ever read (and I‘m a huge Palahniuk fan saying that!)
I‘ve been on a good-book reading streak 🙌🏾 . This book was awesome; scary close to our current US political climate. The book raised questions on current US economical and political policies. I don‘t know what to compare Adjustment Day to, but I viewed it as a story about a post-apocalyptic United States. Throw in extremely controversial issues, and sci-fi and you have Adjustment Day. I wanted to add I loved the ending, many did not.
This is my second time reading this, and oh boy, it‘s scary in its predictions.
So the angry male youth need an outlet, form a sort of cult around a book of ‘wisdom‘, then use cancel culture and fake news to wipe out the opposition - politicians and the well educated. Then segregate the US into three parts: Gaysia, Caucasia, and Blacktopia. It only gets worse from there.
Everything is deeply satirical/dark/vulgar, as only Palahniuk can deliver.
Had this book for a couple years and haven‘t touched it. Figured now is as good as a time as any to dive in, especially given the state of the US right now. Chuck Palahniuk is easily one of my favorite authors. Here we go...
This is Chuck‘s satirical vision of the rise of fascism in the US. Similar to Gilead or the New Founding Fathers, our government is wiped out in a ‘purge‘ like fashion on Adjustment Day. Our country is then separated into factions depending on race or sexual preference. Many conform just to survive, others try to flee. Equal parts frightening and comic, this is definitely a result of the authors thoughts on our current political climate.
This strange and disturbing book was a lot better than I anticipated. Just finished it over lunch earlier today and my mind is reeling!
“Lets go browse around Barnes and Noble to waste time. Not to buy just to look” Said no one ever....
I‘m a huge fan of Chuck and all of his work but this one was tough. I admire his ability to critically view his own work and use satire to unite his own writing with a unique and poignant form of dystopia. For a shorter book, this was long. If you don‘t love this author, I would say probably don‘t try this one.
In the nation for white people as described in this novel, all food is white too. Saw this and thought of it.
Palahniuk is always wry and sarcastic and dark, and this book does not disappoint on those points. It got a little meta for me (a character talks about Fight Club and it‘s author). A violent commentary on society.
I just can‘t. I even skipped ahead page after page and it didn‘t get better.
This is super easy - YES, YES, YES. I get anxiety if I forget a book when I leave the house. Hubster calls it my blankie 😂 Thank goodness for the Kindle app when I forget to bring my book, my Kindle and a spare magazine for anything “outside”@silversreviews #tuesdaytidbits
Was trying to get some #jb cards written and then the lights went out. Thunder and lightning and no electricity means you curl up in bed with your Kindle and your love ❤️
My favorite book of the year so far has been the tagged one. Palahniuk is one of my favorite authors and I think this book is just genius. Thanks for the #giveaway @Mommamanzi
The faster the dead could be honored, the faster they could be forgotten.
A complicated book in terms of what it aspires to say, what it actually says, and how it chooses to say it. While giving benefit of doubt to the author, my estimation is thus: like Fight Club before it, those in need of it's message are most likely to misread it, and those most likely to understand it may not enjoy reading it all the same. What success the book achieves is largly reliant on Pal.'s gift for compelling prose.
Library Haul today 😍 The new Chuck Palahniuk and Miss Subways were just put out on the shelves today, so I get to be the first to read them. They even still have that new book smell. 😁
It took me too long to get through this novel. There are far too many characters--mostly flat cliches. No one to really grab on to or cheer for. Don't get me wrong; I have read most of Palahniuk's work and I knew what to expect. If you don't like satire or have never read him, don't start here. This novel is heavy in theory, criticism, and poking fun at Americans.
“If you can slash a tire, you can harvest an ear.”
On a large scale the premise is so intriguing, but in execution, it‘s a disorganized mess. With no distinct chapters, and a stupid number of characters (none of whom I cared lived, died, lost an ear, whatever), it was easy to get storylines confused. Talbott‘s blue-black book of aphorisms is the only thing that kept me going. Glad it‘s over.

Haven't read any Palahniuk in a while, and this new one seems like it'll be pretty stressful. Saw it available on the New Books table at the #library , though, and figured I could give it a shot.
A brilliantly bleak near-future satirical dystopia that speaks to current political times. Palahniuk will never lose his edge. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love Chuck.

Signed copy cane today! Wooo! I have all his books and I‘ve read him for so long but never had a signed book so this is just the f$&&@(; best!
#ILoveMyIndie because they have new releases (sometimes ARCs) that haven‘t yet become available to the mainstream! In this case just a couple days early, but still! Such a treat for National Independent Bookstore Day 💗📚 #ISupportIndies
FYI I did snatch this up for babe and I to share! 🤗
You might also see Mars Room on the shelf but I resisted because it‘s likely a BOTM pick.
#TBRtemptation post 1! Soon to be released. Be ready to be shocked and to laugh with CP's well-known satire. A plan is set in place to upend the US government and creating in the country's place separatist ethno-states and violently redistributing the elite's wealth. You'll follow a mishmash of displaced characters and newfound power-players. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
