The Monstrumologist
The Monstrumologist | Rick Yancey
These are the secrets I have kept. This is the trust I never betrayed. But he is dead now and has been for nearly ninety years, the one who gave me his trust, the one for whom I kept these secrets. The one who saved me . . . and the one who cursed me. So starts the diary of Will Henry, orphan and assistant to a doctor with a most unusual specialty: monster hunting. In the short time he has lived with the doctor, Will has grown accustomed to his late night callers and dangerous business. But when one visitor comes with the body of a young girl and the monster that was feeding on her, Will's world is about to change forever. The doctor has discovered a baby Anthropophagi--a headless monster that feeds through the mouthfuls of teeth in its chest--and it signals a growing number of Anthropophagi. Now, Will and the doctor must face the horror threatenning to overtake and consume our world before it is too late. The Monstrumologist is the first stunning gothic adventure in a series that combines the spirit of HP Lovecraft with the storytelling ability of Rick Riorden.

😭Margie, thank you so much! You shouldn‘t have but I so appreciate it and it‘s made my day. We‘re getting snow later so the socks will definitely come in handy. I look forward to all three books. LOVE the Stephen King bookmark. And girl please, I‘ve been to the gym 23 times in January and gained 3lbs, mostly cause MickeyD‘s is right next door. Lol. So this candy is most welcome. Thank you so much, Margie! ❤️

vivastory How wonderful! I'll be curious to hear what you think of Monstrumologist. How much snow are you getting? 3y
Reggie @vivastory 4-6 inches. Hopefully more, cause we need it. 3y
vivastory How often does it snow in New Mexico? I'm a bit surprised you're getting that much 3y

Mollyanna I adore Relic. One of my favorite books and the beginning of a fabulous series. I hope you enjoy. 3y
Reggie @vivastory we might get one snow a year that melts the next day but back before our current climate change people where I live said they used to get 4-6 feet every winter. 3y
Reggie @mollyanna I have a friend who says it is her favorite book. Maybe now I can tell her I‘ve read it. 3y

Twainy I read Relic in one sitting forever ago! I‘m a Pendergast fan, the books can be hit/miss. Ugh SNOW 😫 we are forecast to get 5-11” this evening. 🥳 I hate shoveling! 🤬 😆 😫 3y
BookwormAHN I also loved Relic! 3y
kspenmoll What wonderful gifts! Hope you get your snow! 3y
erzascarletbookgasm Nice! I only read The Westing Game as an adult, enjoyed it 👍 3y
Bookzombie Yay! That‘s awesome that you have been to the gym 23 times in January. Regardless of MickeyD‘s visits, that‘s great! I feel less like a couch potato than I did at the end of December, lol. I hope you enjoy all three books. Also, I really enjoyed the popcorn. I hope you do too! 3y

Creepy YA read following a scientist and his assistant as they track down a creature who is feasting on human flesh.

This was great as an audiobook and really helped to take my mind off real life, so it was an excellent distraction. 😁 It had just enough creepiness and mystery to keep me entertained.

I don't really see this series ever being talked about, and that's a shame because it is really great. Though it is marketed as YA, I don't think it should have been, and maybe that's the problem. The Monstrumologist is a great series full of monster hunting and excellent prose. If you're looking for a good series to read this spooky season, I can't recommend it enough.

quietjenn I love this series so much! 5y
Paperback.Propensity @quietjenn It's so good! And I think the prose is excellent. I don't read a lot of books like these. 5y

Decided to pull a book from my son‘s upcoming summer list going into his junior year. Bounced between audio and paperback. The style and mood carried well in both formats.

One of the many books from my earlier #BookOutlet haul; this one is blurbed as “A cross between Mary Shelley and Stephen King”. A young orphan and a doctor who specializes in ‘Monstrumology‘ are investigating monsters that are believed to be extinct in their part of the world after the body of a young girl and a body of that monster are found and brought to them. It sounds intriguing and might be a fun October read!🧟‍♂️ #bookhaul #tbr

My favorite YA author is Rick Yancey. I became a fan after reading his horror series that starts with The Monstrumologist. It‘s a horrific, gory thriller written in Dickensian prose! I absolutely LOVE it!! One of his favorite books is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L‘Engle. I‘ve loved that book since I was a kid and still remember how captivated I was by the fascinating Murray kids and their adventures.

This story is the perfect mixture of monsters, mystery, madness, thrills, chills, and gore—of both the violent and the pestilent varieties. Come for the creatures, stay for the story.

I know so many people love this book. I didn't completely dislike it, but I just wanted more from it. It took forever to get into the story and to start moving somewhere and I just wanted more suspense. I do, however, appreciate the style of writing that we don't see quite so often anymore. It was a different book, but not as scary as I thought it would be.

I listened to this audiobook on my commute at the same time my daughter was reading it. Thankfully she was ahead of me and knowing my queasy stomach warned me of a #graphic scene that would have made my commute horrible if I had not been prepared. Gross scene aside my daughter and I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it!

#sizzlinSummerReads

CindyMyLifeIsLit I adore this book!! It's like a horror novel as written by Charles Dickens. I do believe I know the scene of which you speak, and it was a doozy! I had to put the book down for a few minutes, and I routinely watch the grossest Walking Dead scenes without turning a hair! 7y

AndreaReads @RealLifeReading It's a fun (but gruesome) book. There's four in the series and this is the first. It's written in a way that makes me think that Tim Burton should direct and Johnny Depp should star in a movie version. 8y

This book was so good. I was intrigued from the first page but I intentionally drew it out because I didn't want it to end. I really enjoyed every character.
I didn't expect the description for some scenes to be so descriptive that I could see it clearly in my head. Can't wait to read the second book and see what is going on with William Henry and the doctor.

CaitlinSiem I'm so so so glad you enjoyed this! I completely agree with what you said. I was a bit taken aback at first with how vivid the descriptions were. Such unique and great books :) 8y

Hair raising, gory, and not for the feint of heart or soft stomached. An excellent monster book.

New England in the 1880's: a fantastic Victorian setting for this Lovecraft-meets-Stephen-King series. The main characters, Will Henry and the Doctor, were wonderful. I became quickly entrenched in their horrific little story.

Also, there was a great thread of snark woven into the story that was just enough and appeared in the best moments.

Bette Nice pic 👍📸👀💜 8y

CaitlinSiem @BekahB I was impressed with the gore! I'm not usually fazed by much in books (think it helps that my mom and stepdad—both in the medical field—talked about all the gory details of their jobs over dinner every night growing up) and even I squirmed a few times! But I'm not complaining. I enjoy that uneasiness. Not many books get me their. 8y

BekahB @CaitlinSiem HA! Same here! I've always been a fan of horror so gore doesn't usually get to me either, but I can remember two specific moments in the book where I started fanning myself because I knew what was coming. 😂 8y

My #recommendsday is Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey! This is a fantastic YA horror series where the big bad is always a monster; a beasty pulled from legends or folklore. I love a well done monster novel! The first book in this series was my introduction to YA horror. This book had my heart racing in certain chapters and there were a couple of sections that had me fanning myself (due to the blood and guts and gross). Love it!
