Silent Wife | A S A Harrison
114 posts | 231 read | 9 reading | 94 to read
Soon to be a major motion picture starring Nicole Kidman, fans of"The Girl on the Train"and"Gone Girl"will love"The Silent Wife" "I gobbled it down in one sitting." Anne Lamott, "People" Jodi and Todd are at a bad place in their marriage. Much is at stake, including the affluent life they lead in their beautiful waterfront condo in Chicago, as she, the killer, and he, the victim, rush haplessly toward the main event. He is a committed cheater. She lives and breathes denial. He exists in dual worlds. She likes to settle scores. He decides to play for keeps. She has nothing left to lose. Told in alternating voices, "The Silent Wife "is about a marriage in the throes of dissolution, a couple headed for catastrophe, concessions that can t be made, and promises that won t be kept. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of "Gone Girl" and "These Things Hidden," "The Silent Wife" ensnares the reader from page one and does not let go. """

**update**
I actually really, really enjoyed this book! Kind of surprised with all the bad reviews. I‘d definitely read another from this author if there are any.

1am: starts book from TBR shelf. Interestingly this book has a ton of bad reviews. We shall see…..

This book was done a disservice by its marketing company. I'm going to start with that. This is not a thriller. It's a fascinating look at two psychologically flawed individuals, the chaos and harm they inflict on each other and everyone around them through their reckless/passive aggressive decision-making. There was a subplot involving Jodi & her brothers that needed more or to be left out. This was not a bad read, just not what I was expecting.

Bailed. This did not hold my attention at all, plus it didn't have great reviews on Litsy. Time to move on.

First read by this author. The plot is interesting but in my opinion there's too much psychology and psychoanalysis going on in there.

Nope! This is a big ‘no‘ from me. I didn‘t like the writing, didn‘t like the characters and the plot was just silly. And parts of it annoyed me. What guy on the planet doesn‘t know what a home pregnancy test is??Everyone else seems to love this book. Just not for me. Only read it because it was my Book Club‘s latest read.

Had a great day yesterday, while at the museum I had stopped at the cafe and sat outside to read my book and look at the ducks. Then finished this up on the way home when I stopped for dinner! I loved it! I loved the twists and turns. I
think I have read too many books recently with cheating husbands! But yeah overall it was a great book!

So. I kinda feel this way. I mean somedays I feel like such an old lady. But then sometimes I think I am just super young and have my whole life ahead of me (its particularly hard with a big birthday coming up) also nursing is my second career so I feel like although I have 11 years under my belt I should have closer to 20 ugh! Anyway... Its okay. Life is life!

So I got this book today in the mail (I had purchased a few for the swap and well this one was a purchase for me) Didn't take care of the Self Care thing yesterday but today I did a great job (despite having worked part of the day)
💛 I read outside while having lunch
💛 My Present was the book and getting my hair done
💛 Ate Halloween Candy
💛 Took a walk outside (even though a short work day and headache)

ElizaMarie @jessinikkip It is pretty good so far. I feel like I am about 30ish % done right now and I am just enjoying it so much! I had other books I have been working on but then ... this one kinda jumped up front! 4y
ElizaMarie @mollyrotondo I think it was directly related to work. I had gotten out super late the night before, then went in super early resulting in about 5 hours of sleep with not enough rest rest. I felt instantly better when I got out. Also getting my hair done was a nice little massage. I love when I get my hair washed :) 4y
ElizaMarie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I thought I had tagged you on the original one the other day. I will just email you the picture :) Sorry 4y

Allylu Good for you! Yesterday I went to a new place - even though it was to have cataract surgery! My husband found a lovely trail to run during my surgery. We had to leave home at 5:30 AM so no time to run before we left. Surgery went well. It was a good place. I felt safe and taken care of well. We do the other eye in 2 weeks. 4y
mollyrotondo @ElizaMarie oh I love that feeling too of getting my hair washed when I have a headache. It really is so relaxing. I am glad you are feeling better! 4y
ElizaMarie @Allylu That is so great! I am glad to hear the surgery went well. Also a new place to explore is always fun and rejuvenating!! (edited) 4y
ElizaMarie @mollyrotondo yes! Head massages are so wonderful! Also, this color thing had not a heater but it was like a sauna to “lock in“ color, it was this gentle sauna feeling for your head. It was incredibly calming! 4y

If I could use one word to describe this book it would be verbose. Even that I feel is an understatement. It was a real slog to get through and the pay off at the end wasn‘t even worth it. The only thing that really “shocked” me, was the resolution to the sub plot with her brothers. But the build up to that was so boring even that wasn‘t worth it. This was pretty disappointing.

Since March I‘ve had 30+ library books laying around and my husband said if I finished them all by the end of May I could finally get a #BOTM subscription. Well this is the final one.

Honestly, I‘m proud of myself this month. Feb and March I was in a bit of a slump and the pandemic didn‘t help that in March. But this month I‘ve been going hard. Plus tonight and tomorrow I have 12 hour shifts so here‘s to more reading!

Happy Friday 🌻

This was pretty compelling and I flew through it... But then the ending really let me down. I'm still scratching my head a bit and all I keep thinking is "that's it?" ?

It is not what it appears to be: it is not a standard mystery or juicy suburban thriller. If you are looking for a mainstream Ruth Ware/Liane Moriarty/etc., it will probably frustrate you.
This is a novel about secrets and choices and keeping your mouth shut when you should speak, and being passive aggressive when you should be assertive, and doing these things over and over until it is too late and you can‘t take them back and violence occurs.

I really enjoyed this book, until the end. It's well written, about a couple, infidelity and what someone will go to to keep their home or protect their child? The end was so anticlimactic and I was like what?! That's it!? And what did that past relationship have to do with anything? Weird. Maybe I missed something?

My first beach read of our vacation earned that categorization. A. S. A. Harrison's The Silent Wife is a page turner that revels in the minds of its two protagonists: Jodi and Todd, a couple for twenty years who may be reaching the end of their relationship. Todd is a serial cheater who relies on Jodi's silent acceptance of his infidelity. Jodi is a psychotherapist who has a less-than-stellar understanding of her own mind and feelings. ⬇️

UnabridgedPod The book alternates between their perspectives, revealing the unraveling of their intertwined lives. Solid suspense novel. 5y

This was a super fast listen and riveting. It felt less like a thriller and more like straight fiction commentating on relationships and marriage. There aren't any too surprising twists, but very easy to become invested in the story. The sessions with Jodi's own therapist earlier in life were a bit boring and pointless, but I enjoyed the rest!

RadicalReader @Kaylamburson take it it feels like you‘re in Ferris Beuller‘s class alongside him when the therapy sessions were mentioned 😂😂😂😂 6y

A not very thrilling psychological thriller about a dysfunctional marriage between a cheating scumbag and his Martha Stewart-like common-law wife. She does everything to make his life run smoothly and he thanks her by impregnating the daughter of his best friend (ewwww) and leaving her for this woman half his age. I really couldn‘t blame her for wanting him dead.

A psychological thriller, this is a book about relationships, and how destructive they can be. Jodi and Todd, a couple who see things differently. They live in Chicago in a gorgeous waterfront high rise. That exquisite space is a character in itself. The novel‘s format of “he said”; “she said” appeals to me. (This seems to be a current popular strategy.) I felt as though there were many unanswered questions, and the ending wrapped up too quickly.
