MEM is a rare novel, a small book carrying very big ideas, the kind of story that stays with you long after you've finished reading it. Set in the glittering art deco world of a century ago, MEM makes one slight alteration to history: a scientist in Montreal discovers a method allowing people to have their memories extracted from their minds, whole and complete. The Mems exist as mirror-images of their source -- zombie-like creatures destined to experience that singular memory over and over, until they expire in the cavernous Vault where they are kept. And then there is Dolores Extract #1, the first Mem capable of creating her own memories. An ageless beauty shrouded in mystery, she is allowed to live on her own, and create her own existence, until one day she is summoned back to the Vault. What happens next is a gorgeously rendered, heart-breaking novel in the vein of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. Debut novelist Bethany Morrow has created an allegory for our own time, exploring profound questions of ownership, and how they relate to identity, memory and history, all in the shadows of Montreal's now forgotten slave trade.

As I was reading this I wasn't completely sure how I felt about it. It took a leap of faith to believe erased memories take the form of a living being. But the author nailed the ending, so I was satisfied! So often a lackluster ending ruins a story for me, so this was a pleasant surprise! Read this from @MeganAnn 's #auldlangspine list, so thanks!! And thanks to @Monalyisha

MeganAnn I‘m glad you liked it in the end! I thought it was a very unique little book and she definitely nailed the ending. I haven‘t read anything else quite like it. 10mo

Mem is set in an alternate history where scientists have discovered a way to extract memories from your mind. These mems are shells of the person in which they just relive the experience. Except one - Dolores Extract #1 can think and speak for herself. The story follows her life when she is recalled to the 'Vault' of mems after living on her own for years. It's an interesting story but I felt like some things could have been explained more

While the theme/idea is interesting (sci fi take on preserving your memories, good it bad, by extracting them out of you in the form of a human-like copy of you), the plot felt jumbled & jumped around making it difficult to follow despite being so short.

This intriguing little book got off to a slow start, but ultimately ratcheted up the tension. It reminded me in some ways of Never Let Me Go (with a dash of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). A young woman in an alternate early 20th century Montreal has her own thoughts and feelings, even though she is a mere memory shed by her "real" owner. TW for grammar purists: dangling participle on page 9; just one though, so don't panic.

My review: 🤯😳😰🤭🤯

Novella with original take on the issue of what makes a person a real person. Our memories, good and bad, are who we are, and even if they‘re erased, they never leave us.
If anyone has read this, I‘d love to discuss the ending!
Thanks to the lovely @HotMessJess for sending this to me!

This slim novella is very nuanced. I was drawn to the premise, hooked by the psychological repercussions of creating the Mems, and found myself enjoying every page. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Explanation for missing star below.

WanderingBookaneer I am not a huge fan of Hollywood endings. The court case and its repercussions were not addressed enough and then—Voila! I must admit, I was pleased with the romantic aspect of the ending. 6y

This book makes me wish I was *studying* Literature still, instead of just reading it. I‘d dedicate time to a comparative reading of it alongside “Frankenstein.” The scientists in “Mem” — a speculative novel set in 1920‘s Montreal — are not reanimating a corpse but they *are* birthing a creature with something dangerous at its core: a memory, attached to a passionate, vehement (often traumatic) emotion - extracted from a person & made flesh.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/5: These memory-creatures — “Mems” — usually have a short life sentence, in which they‘re like pale ghosts, caught in a loop, fated to reenact a particular experience over & over again, but with no true consciousness. The protagonist is the exception; somehow, she‘s vibrant & independent. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 2/5: She — Dolores Extract No. 1/Elsie — stands-in for a meditation on what makes a “whole” person. What do we do with negative emotions? We let them destroy us, we let them change us in ways that make us dangerous to others — or, we learn to harness them as motivation for positive change & growth. But it‘s risky to acknowledge them, to let them breathe. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 3/5: Elsie learns about the world as the Monster does (not to the extreme extent of learning language, etc; she retains that from her previous “life”); it‘s all about realizations & the loss of innocence. But does her story end with pitchforks & fire, or eternal loneliness? Will she be made to stalk the peaks of some frigid mountain, forever fearing extinction? I‘ll never tell. (edited) 6y
See All 17 Comments
monalyisha 4/5: My one criticism is that, in the interest of creating a concise yet meaningful package, some threads were dropped. I‘m left with *A LOT* of questions about Camille, one of the side characters, who serves as a mother-figure to Elsie. And they‘re kind-of BIG questions (about agency, free will, & a woman‘s right to her own body), too! I would absolutely read a sequel or a companion story, following Camille & the Professor. (edited) 6y
monalyisha 5/5: I‘m glad I read this. It was unique & a strong way to kick off my 2019 reading year! Thanks to @ladyneverwhere for including it on her #NewYearWhoDis list! I hadn‘t heard a *peep* about it before seeing it on your list, Danielle! (edited) 6y

EleniKara Oh man that combo, I have to check this out! 6y
monalyisha @ladyneverwhere How did you feel about the romantic relationship? Both in general & in the conclusion/solution to the problem of aging? 6y
ralexist This was in my top dozen for 2018. Eerie and intriguing! 6y
ladyneverwhere @monalyisha I tend to be a sucker for people falling in love and almost always want it to work out ?‍♀️ but I remember being frustrated with the power differences between the two characters throughout most of the story. But I liked how the man (can't remember his name) resolved the power issue and the aging problem by putting "himself" on the same footing as Elsie. I thought it was a lovely and hopeful way to end the story. What did you think? 6y
monalyisha @ladyneverwhere I‘m honestly not sure! I have mixed feelings. I also always want to root for love... but I thought it was a little bit weird that he fell for her before he actually met her. It felt a little bit kinky instead of genuine. Is that strange? Eventually, I grew to like him, though, I think. But I was so conflicted about the ending! On the one hand, it solved the aging problem nicely — and yes, put them on more equal ground. 6y
monalyisha @ladyneverwhere But on the other hand, it was such a big deal that Elsie was NOT Dolores. And Elsie fell in love with Harvey... NOT his Mem (OR his epiphany). So it felt a bit too neat & not quite genuine. (edited) 6y
monalyisha @ladyneverwhere I do think it‘s lovely that Harvey knew that curiosity was not enough to create his own Mem. He understood that it could only be done for something direly important (if at all). It means that he counted Elsie as significant. Still, that was Harvey. Not his “epiphany.” Maybe it‘ll be different because his epiphany was *about* her; but is it granting his epiphany freedom if he was, effectively, created to love her? 6y
ladyneverwhere @monalyisha that's so true about Harvey not being his mem, and not something I even remember thinking of when I first read the book. I also don't think I gave much thought about Harvey's mem's freedom and independence but now that you've brought it up it's something I wish I had. This makes me wish I'd read it in book club or at school like you said before so I would have really analyzed it and not just fallen in love with the story 😁 6y

Bethany Morrow, casually describing exactly my type of fiction:

“One of the most rewarding aspects of writing speculative fiction is infusing magic and whimsy (and, of course, devastation) into a world not always unlike my own.”

P.S. I‘m not taking my tree down (yet or maybe ever*). You can‘t make me.

monalyisha @abbielistenstobooks That particular ornament holds a special place in my heart. My Dad used to call my Grandma “Abominable” because of the way she walked (she had bad knees). Speculative fiction. That's what they call this apparently. I got a bit lost in places, it leaves a lot to the imagination. If you have questions about the plot you'll have to answer them yourself. Very nicely written short read and quite fascinating on the whole, I'm still thinking about it a week later.

It's not a good sign when you reach the end and double-check to make sure you didn't miss a chunk or misunderstand that it is not the first book in a series. I kept thinking the book must have more coming because it set up the story and character on an intriguing premise about an extracted memory fragment who becomes her own being. But then it sputters along and just ends. It read like a long pitch proposal that had not developed into a novel.

Impressive debut novel that imagines an alternate past in which people have managed to extract embodied memories. Dolores Extract No. 1 defies expectations from her inception. More than just a Mem, she questions her nature, the right to ownership, and what it means to be an individual. The novel is short almost too sparse at times. I wish some themes had been explored more, but it‘s a promising debut.

What if you could extract your memories? Just remove the ones you don't want. Would you do it? Now, what if those memories were exact copies of you, living but forever locked in that point in time? Told from the viewpoint of a unique Mem (memory) who has somehow gained sentience, this short speculative fiction novel set in the Art Deco period is a delightful story that makes you think about how we define what's real and what's not.

Mem is a lovely book. Though very smart and considered, it‘s ultimately driven by emotion and the sort of spontaneous realizations that happen when one least expects it - the kind one looks back on as having a “before” and “after”.

For such a short book it left me with a lot to think about. Set in a world where people can extract memories that then become their own beings called Mems. This novella packs a lot into a slim volume. Much in the same vein of “Never Let Me Go” it explores the question of what makes a person. Additionally, though, this book explores memory, how it shapes us, how it helps prepare us for life ahead, and what we become without it. I liked the writing style and the early 20th century setting. 5⭐️ The ebook is available on Hoopla.

This weird little novella presents a world where people who need #help forgetting can elect to have a memory extracted, where it then spins off into its own person and is kept separate from the rest of the world. Think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets Westworld 🤯 I loved Morrow's philosophical approach to our concept of memories, good or bad.
