Orphan Elizabeth Somers' malevolent guardians ship her away over the holiday break to the peculiar Winterhouse Hotel owned by the mysterious Norbridge Falls. Upon arrival, Elizabeth quickly discovers that Winterhouse has many charms-most notably its massive library. It's not long before she locates a magical book of puzzles that will unlock a mystery involving Norbridge, his sinister family, and a curse! As fate would have it, Elizabeth is the only person who can break the curse. But will it be at the cost of losing the people she has come to care for, and even Winterhouse itself?Set against a rich and enchanting backdrop, this smartly written magical adventure is a hugely exciting debut. So fun to find a new favorite middle grade series! I‘d actually got this out of the library a couple of times based on the cool cover, but never ended up reading it so I went with the audiobook which was a great choice. I LOVE the narrator and the story is excellent. I really enjoy books set in big old hotels. This has puzzles and a mystery to solve and lots of cool hotel-at-Christmas type elements to it as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Magical, puzzle-y, and set in a whimsical hotel with a strange history, this middle grade novel would be perfect to read in the winter. The main character Elizabeth normally lives with her unkind aunt and uncle, but they send her away for the holidays and she doesn‘t know why (or how they can afford it). An adventure ensues and along the way she finally meets some people who like and value her. And she gets up to some mischief!

Surprisingly good. I wasn‘t sure about the ghost part of the story, and tbh that wasn‘t my favorite storyline. But the friendship is awesome (they even have a fight and have to compromise!), the hotel people are great, and Elizabeth is a good MC. I ordered the third book already but Book Outlet didn‘t have the second in hardcover so now I have to find it. Gotta have them match, ya know. Also, 38/20 chapters for #20in4 done!

A nice winter read for this year. I was expecting it to be more Christmas-y than it was, so that was slightly disappointing, but I loved the word games Elizabeth and Freddy played, and assuming there‘s a next one, I will definitely be reading it. 4.5⭐️

Maps in books can be so pretty. I‘m perpetually lost tho - so they don‘t really help me understand where anything is...

(Yes, I‘m that millennial that had never needed to read a map, who factors getting lost time into how long it‘ll take to get somewhere new and as a general rule, if I feel strongly that I should turn one way... then I should turn the other)

LazyOwl Agree, those end papers are pretty 😍 4y
Ruthiella I‘m GenX and grew up with maps but am terrible at spatial relationships! 😂 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Ruthiella, thank goodness we have gps now 😆 someone asked for the book of road maps at the library the other day and then proceeded to ask my opinion on how to get somewhere... 😜 slightly awkward moment for me 4y

This book goes straight to the ❤ Best read during a snow storm, wrapped into a warm blanket with a hot chocolate and some Turkish Delights.

WINTERHOUSE is a magical middle grade mystery that ties together a ghost story with a huge love of books, wordplay (especially anagrams), secret codes, and puzzles. I especially loved the friendship between Elizabeth and Freddy, and how they brought out the best in each other. This book is suspenseful without ever being too scary for kids on the younger end of the MG age range. It's a fun, wholesome read that keeps you on your toes throughout.

megnews I really enjoyed this when I read it last month and I‘m looking forward to continuing the series. 4y

I really loved the two kids. They're curious and smart and kinda odd balls. Good mystery and setting...just a TON of elements of Harry Potter.
Neglectful guardian aunt & uncle. Vague blurry memory of parents death.
Inexplicably sent to magical place. Makes friends with smarty pants. Weird kinda sketchy Headmaster--I mean...Hotel Director that watches from a distance and helps when needed. Random magic around Hogwart--I mean...hotel.

I really loved this book: the setting, the characters, the mystery. ❤️ The only thing that bothered me a little were unnecessary repetitions, such as Elizabeth and Freddy constantly stressing how great they find each other. Yeah, we get it, they are clever kids, good at solving riddles - no need to assure us of that fact every 2 minutes. 🙄 All in all, it is a wonderful middle grade book and I can‘t wait for part two to come out.

Cute juvenile level book with a hotel full of secrets. Elizabeth‘s awe about books (love all the references) and her budding friendships with the other guests were just lovely to read. Although, the other kid, Freddy, who became besties with Elizabeth, was a bit of a pill for my tastes. But I‘ll definitely read the next one.
