Gunslinger (Revised)
Gunslinger (Revised) | Stephen King
In 1978 Stephen King introduced the world to the last Gunslinger, Roland of Gilead. Nothing has been the same since. Over twenty years later the quest for the Dark Tower continues to take readers on a wildly epic ride. Through parallel worlds and across time, Roland must brave desolate wastelands and endless deserts, drifting into the unimaginable and the familiar as the road to the Dark Tower extends beyond its own pages. A classic tale of colossal scope crossing over terrain from "The Stand," "The Eyes of the Dragon," "Insomnia," " The Talisman, " "Black House," "Hearts in Atlantis," " Salem s Lot "and other familiar King haunts the adventure takes hold with the turn of each page. And the tower awaits The First Volume in the Epic DARK TOWER Series The Gunslinger This heroic fantasy is set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace that is a dark mirror of our own. A spellbinding tale of good versus evil, it features one of Stephen King s most powerful creations The Gunslinger, a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of the lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier western legend. The Gunslinger s quest involves the pursuit of The Man in Black, a liaison with the sexually ravenous Alice, and a friendship with the kid from Earth called Jake. Both grippingly realistic and eerily dreamlike, here is stunning proof of Stephen King s storytelling sorcery."

I do reread. Every Christmas, I read A Christmas Carol. I‘ve read Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower series multiple times. When I am pensive and need a calming book, I read Anne Morrow Lindbergh‘ Gift From the Sea.

ImperfectCJ 💯 Gift From the Sea. I'm finding it more and more poignant and meaningful as I get older (and now that I know more about what her husband was up to at the time she was writing it... yikes). 6mo

The first of the series. I‘ve seen some describe this novel as more of a prologue to the rest of the series and it does have that feel. It feels more atmospheric than plot driven. It took a little to get into it because of that, but by the end I was fully invested. If a combo weird atmospheric sci-fi, dystopian, western story sounds interesting, then this might be for you.

I love the beginning phrase: “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” And so begins the story of Roland and his quest to reach the Dark Tower. This is my third reading of this series and I love it every time I read it. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

“A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King‘s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.”

KathyWheeler King has said that the first line of this novel is one of his best lines. I agree. It‘s concise but still manages to set the tone and the atmosphere of this book. 2y

Finally finished my reread. I‘ll call it a low pick.

I maintain my initial opinion that this isn‘t one of my favorites by King because it is all over the place. But I can 100% see how it is an introduction to this world and is setting up a much grander story.

Michael Whelan‘s illustrations are *chef‘s kiss*

Up next in my #readingStephenKing challenge is Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption!! Very excited to finally read it!

When I first read The Gunslinger, I was a bit underwhelmed by how sparse it was. But this time, listening to the audiobook, I could appreciate the quality of King‘s prose; you can tell he really wanted it to feel like a high fantasy while still incorporating the western and sci-fi elements. At which he is successful. The climax is where it falters; I think King was still unsure where the series would go. Thankfully, he figured it out in due time.

This book makes so much more sense now that I learned it was a series of novellas put together to make a novel. I‘ve always thought it a bit disjointed as a complete story, but I get it now. It really mostly serves to set up the world and introduce characters, I suppose.

Anyway, this was the only Stephen King book I had ever read before starting on my #readingStephenKing project, so it‘s a reread for me now.

TheNeverendingTBR Is this the only Dark Tower book you've read? 2y
intothehallofbooks @TheNeverendingTBR Yes! I read this one a few years ago and then read about one or two chapters of the second Dark Tower book, then stopped and decided to start from King‘s beginning and read his books and stories in the order he wrote them. That‘s why I haven‘t read more yet. I‘m working on the books he published in 1982 now. 2y
TheNeverendingTBR @intothehallofbooks AWESOME!! 😍 What's been your favourite so far? 2y
intothehallofbooks @TheNeverendingTBR Oh, for sure it has been The Stand. So far. I loved Salem‘s Lot, The Shining, and Cujo too. But The Stand is really something special, I think. 2y

Honestly, reviewing a book that I've read this many times is difficult. This series is a core component of my literary heart. That said, The Gunslinger is an excellent introduction to Roland's world, especially in its revised and expanded form. Readers are introduced to the primary focus of the series, and hit with frequent flashes of foreshadowing regarding the long and circuitous journey that lies ahead. 19/19, may it do ya fine.

I've read this a few times in my fangirl days. I always liked this story but Lord, is it slow! Lots of unpopular opinions from me on King. I hate how often he uses the words slut and whore. I hate the way he rambles. But I love Jake and I still kind of love Roland. ❤

I think this book is one of the weakest starts to a series out there, BUT it is essential for your trip to The Dark Tower. Blending western, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror elements, King started something unique when he published this 40 years ago. Not much happens in this book, but the rich world building and characterization provoke a necessity to continue with Roland on his quest despite knowing almost nothing about it. Almost as if it is “ka.”3⭐️

A quick and easy read from the King! You can tell how good of a writer King is from the fact that I absolutely could not read the fantasy/supernatural genre before I fell into his world. I‘ve learned that if you just go along with it and bring your imagination, it can be one helluva ride.

Apparently this is the weakest in the series, so I‘m excited to continue the journey.

This book tells you of a goal, the Dark Tower in an endless desert in this messed up sci-fi/fantasy, spaghetti western.

A reread of one of my most beloved series. Now I‘ll finally persevere and read through them all! 😅 I gave up a little over a decade ago because of a certain character. Don‘t worry, you‘ll know when I get to them again. 🙄 King‘s mashup of Western, fantasy, sci fi and horror creates such a rich universe for his story. Thank you @Twainy for including it in my swap and returning me to the series. ❤️❤️ I‘ll be adding the 2nd to my Feb. TBR. 😍

Twainy I bought these on CD so long ago. Every once in awhile I check to see if there‘s a hardcover collectors set, maybe a special anniversary edition. There is a graphic novel version but I‘m holding out. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Twainy I‘ve been putting off the graphic novels for after I‘ve read all the novels, but I really do want to get to them eventually. King mentioned in the forward of this book how of all his novels, this series seems to be the least talked about/known. I don‘t think the film did it any favors when it comes to exposure... 🤦‍♀️ Maybe someday there will be a special edition set worthy of collecting. ❤️📚😍📚❤️ Hope springs eternal! 😅 4y
Twainy I agree!! I remember reading book one & thinking ... ok this isn‘t scary. I was reading King for the horror and that didn‘t strike me as horror. It took me a few books to get into that series but then I was HOOKED! It‘s a series I‘ll listen to again & again like Harry Potter. I eagerly await an anniversary collectors edition. 😁 4y
KathyWheeler @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm When he does read, he pretty much reads non-fiction. He watches a lot more tv than I do. We started listening to audiobooks on road trips. I‘ve introduced him to Doctor Sleep, The Dresden Files, The Rivers of London series, and (weirdly, because it doesn‘t fit) The Agony and the Ecstasy. He‘s loved them all. I don‘t know how or why I ended up being the person to pick the books, but it‘s been fun. 😊 4y

1.) The Gunslinger (Opened my eyes to how bizarre epic fantasy can get, and it‘s the first book my wife ever recommended to me when we started to date in high school)
2.) Fave Protagonist: Roland (such an interesting mix of lone wolf cowboy and knight)
Fave Antagonist: Barlow (from Salem‘s Lot, because he was almost always five steps ahead of the protagonists)
