My Planet
My Planet: Finding Humor in the Oddest Places | Mary Roach
From acclaimed, New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach comes the complete collection of her My Planet articles published in Readers Digest. She was a hit columnist in the magazine, and this book features the articles she wrote in that time. Insightful and hilarious, Mary explores the ins and outs of the modern world: marriage, friends, family, food, technology, customer service, dental floss, and antsshe leaves no element of the American experience unchecked for its inherent paradoxes, pleasures, and foibles. On Cleanliness: Ed has crud vision, and I dont. I dont notice filth. Ed sees it everywhere. I am reasonably convinced that Ed can actually see bacteria. . . . He confessed he didnt like me using his bathrobe because Id wear it while sitting on the toilet. Its not like it goes in the water, I protested, though if you counted the sash as part of the robe, this wasnt strictly true. On the Internet: The Internet is a boon for hypochondriacs like me. Right now, for instance, Im feeling a shooting pain on the side of my neck. A Web search produces five matches, the first three for a condition called Arnold-Chiari Malformation. While my husband, Ed, reads over my shoulder, I recite symptoms from the list. General clumsiness and general imbalance, I say, as though announcing arrivals at the Marine Corps Ball. Difficulty driving, lack of taste, difficulty feeling feet on ground. Those arent symptoms, says Ed. Those are your character flaws. On Fashion: My husband recently made me try on a bikini. A bikini is not so much a garment as a cloth-based reminder that your parts have been migrating all these years. My waist, I realized that day in the dressing room, has completely disappeared beneath my rib cage, which now rests directly on my hips. Im exhibiting continental drift in reverse. On Eating Healthy: So Ed and I were eating a lot of vegetables. Vegetables on pasta, vegetables on rice. This was extremely healthy, until you got to the part where Ed and I are found in the kitchen at 10 p.m., feeding on Froot Loops and tubes of cookie dough.

It may be the fact that I have read too many books in this sort of category this year but this book did not tickle me as much as I thought it would.
Essentially Mary Roach's observations on her life on this planet.

Light, humorous collection of columns about everyday life. Nothing special, but still good companion for dull chores. #nFnov ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Eh. Not for me - humor that's about putting yourself down is neither funny nor interesting, as far as I'm concerned. She takes interesting subjects and makes jokes about them, rather than really explaining them. I'll try at least one more of her books (this wasn't my first), but I'm not expecting to love any of hers.

Waiting on a new book to arrive tomorrow, so I grabbed this short essay collection from #scribd to keep me occupied until then. 😁📖

Finished this book while hanging out in the doctor‘s office waiting room... This was a fun book of essays. The book is very different from Roach‘s other books as it deals with several subjects and the essays aren‘t related to one another. But the essays were short making the book fly by and it was filled with Roach‘s trademark humor. I would start with this book if you are new to Mary Roach but it‘s a very enjoyable read.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Ooooh, I like her!!! Thanks for posting!! (edited) 7y
minkyb Always good to have a rec on where to start! 7y
TommieMarie74 I would say her best two books are Stiff and Gulp. Stiff is my personal favorite. 7y

Lea That‘s my least favorite of hers. Stiff is the best. 7y
TommieMarie74 @lea I completely agree. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I didn‘t know about this one! I love her stuff!! 7y
CuriousG I made the mistake of reading Stiff first - none of the others have connected in quite the same way for me 😔 Bonk came the closest, though I kept thinking it should be called Stiff: Risen from the Dead (or some similarly ill advised attempt at humour) 7y
TommieMarie74 @CuriousG I did the same thing. The only other book that matched up to Stiff was Gulp. Have you read that one yet? 7y
CuriousG I did read Gulp - I liked it, but didn't hold the same fascination as Stiff. I'm curious about Grunt though. Feel like that one has potential for me. Packing for Mars was interesting, but if I wasn't listening on audio I might have put it down and forgot about it. (Benefits of having to drive a lot for work - audiobooks!) 7y

We listened to this #audiobook on our way to and from Vancouver last week for a little Christmas break getaway. My daughter and I laughed all the way there and back, mostly because the author's husband shares so many quirks with my darling, though she doesn't try to hide any of her own pitfalls. It was a perfect #roadtrip book.
