I spent a good part of today listening to this murder mystery set in Sweden while working around the house. It‘s the first book of the Wallander series and I can see myself picking up another sometime, although I know I will never make my way through all of them. It is a great winter listen if you want something bleakly realistic rather than cozy.

I really enjoy Mankell. All of his novels are outstanding. The hero is so human, flawed, unsure of himself.

So I‘m back into ‘Nordic Noir‘ with this one. I‘ve read some other books by Henning Mankell and think he‘s great. I‘ve decided to try and read the whole Kurt Wallander series from the start. This is book one. A good mystery. A bit rushed at the end but still good.

An elderly couple is murdered. The public‘s issues concerning immigration are causing problems with the investigation. Winter is settling in and the Swedish landscape is just as bleak as Wallander‘s chances of solving this case…and as bleak as his personal life. This is a GEM. A wonderful procedural. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I didn‘t have a clue about whodunnit until the end. This 100% belongs on The List. 200/1,001 #1001Books

My first novel in the Kurt Wallander series and l really loved it. Though l have to admit part of the feeling is the merit of a fantastic reader.

It is a story surprisingly contemporary despite having been written in the 1990s. It about immigration and fear and difficult living together.
Wallander is a wonderfully human protagonist. The mystery was great.

Well, l have to say it: l'm loving this new novel of the Wallander series.
Wallander is such a relatable character, and the mystery seams quite believable and interesting.

It's so strange reading about the 1990s. It's only a few years ago, l remember them, and still it feels like a different planet. So strange, and still pleasant.

I'm listening to it and the reader is fantastic!

Never read or watched any Wallander, thought l've heard lots of good things about these books.
So I thought the #ReadingEurope2020 is the perfect occasion to finally read it.
Or rather listening. Only listen for half an hour but l already like it a lot. Dick Hill, the reader, is absolutely brilliant.

This is the first in the series featuring Swedish police detective Kurt Wallander, who is one hot mess. He totally gives off the #RescueMe vibe, as he investigates the brutal murder of an elderly couple while battling personal demons of his own making. The translation from Swedish was dicey in parts, but I like flawed characters, and Wallander is definitely one. I‘ll continue with the series for sure! #Movember

”Ragged clouds raced across the sky, and the wind was gusting up to gale force. After waking at dawn, Wallander lay in bed for a long time and listened to the wind. When he stepped on the #scale in the bathroom, he saw that he had lost another 2 pounds. This cheered him up so much that when he pulled into the parking lot at the police station he did not have the sense of despondency he‘d been feeling lately.”

This was my choice for s book set in Scandinavia for #popsugarreadingchallenge and also for the #LetterM for #LitsyAtoZ (in translation). It is a solid procedural, very gloomy and a little claustrophobic at times. It was written in the 1990s so there some odd sexism and some fear of immigrants that wasn‘t fun to read, but I would check out some of the more recent books about this detective to see if that gets any better.

I need to read more Scandinavian crime novels, because every time I do I enjoy them. They have a lot of depth and the mysteries are complex. This one also reminded me that anti-immigration sentiment is an issue everywhere and seems to return often in history.

myellenbee I really like the books by Arnaldur Indridason which take place in Iceland, another author from Iceland is Yrsa Sigurdardottir the one I've read is I Remember You: A Ghost story. And of course The 100 Year-Old Man Who Crawled Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson. 6y
