The Hunt for Red October
The Hunt for Red October | Tom Clancy
Here is the runaway bestseller that launched Tom Clancys phenomenal career. A military thriller so gripping in its action and so convincing in its accuracy that the author was rumored to have been debriefed by the White House. Its theme: the greatest espionage coup in history. Its story: the chase for a top secret Russian missile sub. Lauded by the Washington Post as breathlessly exciting, The Hunt for Red October remains a masterpiece of military fiction by one of the worlds most popular authors, a man whose shockingly realistic scenarios continue to hold us in thrall.

(1984) I tried this once years ago and bounced off. I remember hearing Clancy's work described as "thrillers for people who find 'Jane's Fighting Ships' thrilling," and that matched my experience. But this time I pushed, let the jargon slide by, and ... It wasn't bad. There's a submarine duel near the end that was thrilling even for this guy who likes "Jane's" only for pretty pictures. Still not my thing but this time I get its appeal

Leftcoastzen Think it might have been the only novel originally published by Naval Institute Press . 1y
swynn I think it was the first but that there have been others. Stephen Coonts's "Flight of the Intruder" was another. Pretty impressive choices, even if only from a business standpoint. 1y

Bought a used copy of The Hunt for Red October, and not only is it signed, but there's an invoice from 1986 tucked inside! This is why I love buying used.

DogMomIrene Plus it‘s an invoice from the U.S. Naval Institute, which is even cooler! 3y

Day 14 of #20series20days

Tom Clancy‘s series is a bit dated now, but I love Jack Ryan, the knight in shining armor, fighting for truth and justice against evil in the world. Wish it were so clear cut today! I‘ve held onto the books all these years—at some point I want to re-read them all.
@Andrew65

Andrew65 I really need to read more Tom Clancy, only read 1. 4y
Andrew65 Just checked it was 4y
MsMelissa Great choice! I love the Jack Ryan novels, too 😊 4y
Bluebird @Andrew65 I‘ve not read that SSN. I‘ve only read the original series, not any of the ones he co-wrote. 4y

This one's a typical Clancy with lots of background information and many, many details. To many, for my taste. I soon was lost in all those characters, datas and settings. I guess, if you read Clancy chronologically and more often, you won't be troubled by that.

But thanks to this book I've been able to discover a whole new world: the world of submarines. A world I will never see in real life. Thank you for that, Mr Clancy!

What book could be better for a prompt of #October? I admit that this has been on my TBR and untouched since.....2009? Maybe 2008... I really should read this!

I desperately wanted to like this book. I remember the original movie and got excited when this was re-released. The main plot was intriguing, but I couldn‘t get through all the technical submarine stuff.

This was my first Tom Clancy book and rightfully so as it was his debut novel and the first appearance of his famous Jack Ryan character.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys military operation reads or submariner reads.

On a side note...my book fell apart while I was reading it. I told you all it was really old! I have lugged this around for years and through moves to different houses. I also bought it at a used book sale. I guess it‘s time to retire this old paperback, as big chunks of it and many individual pages are falling out. It‘s still sad for me. I HATE not passing books along for someone else to enjoy. Ugh 😫

jpmcwisemorgan Turn it into some bookish art! 7y

Wow, it is difficult to say how long I have been holding on to this book on my #TBR...20 years is not an exaggeration. I finally read it for #MountTBR #192019 & #GreatAmericanRead. I have seen the movie numerous times, but of course the book was better. It was much more involved, and you could get inside each character‘s head. It‘s very technical, and at times it was over my head. I did think the cat-and-mouse game was very compelling. Great book!

Traci1 Love this book. And the movie. 7y

I suppose under the Atlantic is pretty close to the sea, isn't it? ???

This is really the grandfather of the military technothriller genre, taking cues from the exuberant mechanical adventures of Clive Cussler, the tense spy novels of John LeCarré, and the cross-border action thrillers of Robert Ludlum. It has all the flaws of a work done by a privileged white guy obsessed with the navy, but for all that, it's a fun read ? #somethingforsept

Zelma I haven't read it but the movie sure gets a lot of play in our house. 8y
DGRachel The submarine chase scene in the book is incredible, so much better than the movie. Love this one! 8y
becausetrains @Zelma what @DGRachel said. Not to mention, the book lets you get into the heads of characters not named Jack Ryan 🤔 and has a little more moral ambiguity, realism, and backbone. 8y

monkeygirlsmama My husband's fav, or one of anyhow. For me, I just can't. I've even tried watching the movie with him, and within the first 5 minutes I'm out cold every time. I say every time, because I can think of at least 6 occasions I've made the attempt to watch with him. Nope. Not gonna happen. 😜 (edited) 8y

I started reading it, but he lost me with side stories and background info. I love the story, but it was too much distraction from the main plot for me.

Jamesmelvinmitchell I felt about the same on the story. Have you read his other book call Red Storm Rising? 9y
TheNextBook I tried reading Red Storm Rising and couldn't do it! And the premise seemed so interesting. I think I got lost in the overwhelming detail and slower plot. 9y
