Angel with Two Faces
Angel with Two Faces: A Mystery Featuring Josephine Tey | Nicola Upson
As befits a tribute to the golden age of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers et. al., there are plot twists, plot turns and red herrings aplenty. Time Out London Real-life British mystery writer Josephine Tey returns as a fictional sleuth in Angel with Two Facesthe second atmospheric mystery in Nicola Upsons wonderfully inventive series. In this riveting sequel to Expert in Murder, Tey, in league with intrepid policeman Detective Inspector Archie Penrose, is called upon to help unravel a dark and perplexing crime at a Cornwall country house and backstage at a local theater. Summer in Cornwall - but whilst the rocky coastline and presence of the sea may feel summery that‘s where the lightness ends! This book is layered with mysteries, dark, tangled relationships, abuse, violence and the legacy of war. It‘s using the format of the Golden Age but with a good dose of realism! Tey‘s Scotland Yard friend - Archie really lead this narrative and it feels a little early in a series to allow the main character to step back.

Two down, many more to go in Nicola Upson‘s historical fiction mystery series starring real-life mystery writer Josephine Tey. I snuck in some outdoor time yesterday, the first warm day in a while, to read it. I found it really gripping with lots to figure out, and the upshot was something I‘d NEVER considered. Very interesting. Upson‘s style is sort of elevated with lots of description and a broad vocabulary- not fluffy but definitely enjoyable.

Andrew65 I really enjoyed this one and am current,y reading book 3. 5y
kspenmoll Nice review! 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Oh you remind me I should get back to this series. I‘ve only read the first and enjoyed it. 5y

This was an excellent historical mystery read, and is book two in the Josephine Tey Series. Quite a complex book, and amazing what goes on in families and boy what a family! This maintained my interest throughout and kept me wanting to read on. Some good mystery and twists in the book, not to mention shocks. Recommended.

So far at 16 hrs 50 mins in #24B4Monday, and my second book finished.

BeansPage Woop! Keep going!!! 5y
Andrew65 @SumisBooks Thanks, going well. 😍 5y

Crazeedi Enjoy, looks so beautiful and peaceful 5y
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It is, a great stretch of sandy beach in both directions. 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi It is now the wind died down, 50+ mph winds overnight and this morning. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 wow, glad you didn't get blown away!😉 5y
Leftcoastzen Lovely! Cold beaches are my jam! With a knit cap of course. 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Been a lot of strong and stormy winds over last 15 days. Spoke a bit soon, some more wind incoming 😂 5y
Andrew65 @Leftcoastzen A lot warner than yesterday when it was a bitter wind. 🥶 5y
julesG Great view. Thanks for sending that wind over here. 😬 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 hang on to your book!!😉😁 5y
Mtroiano Beautiful view! 5y
Andrew65 @julesG We‘ve had plenty of wind to spare recently. 😳 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Definitely need to. 5y
ljuliel Beautiful view. How warm is it there ? 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel Not too cold at all today, around 11 c / 51 F. Although cooler now than when had sone watery sunshine. The wind yesterday though cut you in half. Been a mild winter but very wet hence all the flooding in the UK. 5y
ljuliel We spent Christmas at the beach several years ago, and it was freezing down there ! It felt colder than here because there‘s always more of a breeze at the beach than here. The beach looks pretty anytime of year though. 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel It can definitely feel colder but nothing beats being by the sea. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I agree with ⬆️ statement!!🏖 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Always my favourite place to be. 5y
gradcat Wow! This is really gorgeous! How did the weather act for you guys? 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Mostly very windy and some rain, but at least it was a break and we could see the sea! 5y
gradcat Your photo is so beautiful, @Andrew65 ... this would make a lovely poster, imho.... 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat It was a great cliff location to take this picture, and gave a great photograph just a shame it wasn‘t sunny! 5y
gradcat Still looks really good...I think maybe it‘s just the right light for a panorama, you can make out everything in the landscape. 5y

The second in the Josephine Tey mystery series packs a punch: suicide, murder, incest, arson, abortion, witchcraft, funerals, theatrical productions... plus Josephine, Archie, and their much delayed, much restrained courtship. Onwards to #3!

I forgot to review this the other night. This was fantastic, much more intense & dramatic than you expect. Bk2 in Upsons Josephine Tey series, you'd be mistaken writing this off as a "cozy crime" series, it's much more than that.Josephine & Archie have gone to Cornwall for a holiday at Archie's family estate when a series of deaths rattle the small community. With suicide, murder, incest & even witchcraft in this story, it's one hell of a read.5⭐️

erzascarletbookgasm I loved the first book. Haven't got to this yet. Good to know :) 7y

Halfway through this novel with just over 26 1/2 hrs under my belt & I'm doing some audiobooking in bed before getting a few hours sleep before the finish line. It's 7.30am here, I've had about an hour&half nap in my library chair, I'm stiff & my eyes are sore but I've had a blast this weekend. Good luck to people still going to their total, congrats to people who've finished & well done to the organisers & sponsors. You rock!🤘 #24in48 #readathon

For Bk5 in my #24in48 #readathon list, I'm going with another new read. This is Bk2 in the Josephine Tey series by Nicola Upson, I read the first, An Expert In Murder, a few months ago and really enjoyed it. And after the full-on roller coaster of Final Girls, a nice gentle "cozy crime" type book is exactly what I need. Counting down those final hours, I'm definitely hitting at least 24hrs, barring any emergencies (touch wood) #gettingmybooknerdon
