Speak Easy, Speak Love
Speak Easy, Speak Love | McKelle George
Six teenagers lives intertwine during one thrilling summer full of romantic misunderstandings and dangerous deals in this sparkling retelling of Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing. After she gets kicked out of boarding school, seventeen-year-old Beatrice goes to her uncles estate on Long Island. But Hey Nonny Nonny is more than just a rundown old mansion. Beatrices cousin, Hero, runs a struggling speakeasy out of the basementone that might not survive the summer. Along with Prince, a poor young man determined to prove his worth; his brother, John, a dark and dangerous agent of the local mob; Benedick, a handsome trust-fund kid trying to become a writer; and Maggie, a beautiful and talented singer; Beatrice and Hero throw all their efforts into planning a massive party to save the speakeasy. Despite all their worries, the summer is beautiful, love is in the air, and Beatrice and Benedick are caught up in a romantic battle of wits that their friends might be quietly orchestrating in the background. Hilariously clever and utterly charming, McKelle Georges debut novel is full of intrigue and 1920s charm. For fans of Jenny Han, Stephanie Perkins, and Anna Godbersen.

Hey, #GroupR! Here are the four books I‘m considering—let me know what you think! #lmpbc

See All 9 Comments
Readergrrl Ooh! Shakespeare‘s Much Ado??? One of my favorites!! My vote is for Speak Easy, but they all sound great... Maybe These Old Shades? That also sounds great! I can‘t decide! 4y
TheAromaofBooks These all look good to me! Surprisingly, These Old Shades is a Heyer I haven't read yet! 4y
cwarnier I love jill mansell books, but all of then look good 4y
hes7 @Readergrrl @TheAromaofBooks @cwarnier Okay, the infallible decision-making capability of “eeny, meeny, miny, moe” has settle on These Old Shades as my choice. 4y
Readergrrl Exciting!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Can't argue with fate!! 😂 I think that I am going to go with the tagged book, by the way - I don't think I remembered to go back and update everyone!! @Readergrrl @cwarnier 4y

Two rather different novels this month!

Linsy Love those covers! ✨ 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Love the cover for The Glass Woman! 4y
VeganCleopatra @TheAromaofBooks I like it too. Unfortunately mine is an ebook and I think that is a non-US version...alas, they are so often better. 4y
TheAromaofBooks It's true. Sometimes I order from the Book Depository so I can get the UK editions! 4y

A retelling of Shakespeare‘s much ado about nothing set in a speakeasy during the 1920s. So much fun.

Feburary TBR. Still at the Plantagenets, adding lotsa romance, obviously, a couple of book club picks (including a couple not shown, for extra shiny) and a few middle grade books, because I feel like it might be a gap in my Readers Advisory, so I‘m trying to increase the amount of that I‘m reading.
Most excited for Speak Easy, Speak Love—a 1920s retelling of Much Ado About Nothing

DGRachel I LOVED Speak Easy, Speak Love! 💖 5y

One of my #TBR recommendations from Book Riot and I absolutely loved it. I love Shakespeare retellings, when done well, and this was a delightful rom-com set in Prohibition-era New York. Entertaining, witty, and just plain fun. Highly recommended!

Much love to #Bailey for finally letting me finish it. 😂 #dogsoflitsy #pitbullsoflitsy #readingbuddy #snugglebuddy

Not strictly book related, as you can see, I‘ve been forced to put my book down with less than 100 pages to go. #Bailey says “less reading, more petting, if you please”. 🤣

The Wolf and the Watchman managed to get even worse. I‘m honestly not sure I‘m going to be able to stomach the depravity and finish it. Right now, I need rainbows, puppies, and kittens, so I‘m starting this 1920s version of Much Ado About Nothing and snuggling with #Bailey.

Mitch Bailey looks super cuddlable 😘 6y
TheSpineView I didn't like The Wolf and the Watchman either. It was DNF for me at page 107. 6y
Leftcoastzen I wanna give Bailey a kiss!😘 6y
charl08 If it was me I'd dnf it: no point reading it if you don't have to, and you're not enjoying it. 6y

I received my second set of #MyTBR Tailored Book Recommendations from Book Riot today and I couldn‘t be more excited! Now, I just have to find time to read them! 😱🤦🏻‍♀️📚📚

Ashley_Nicoletto I really loved my sister the serial killer. I also love this service. 6y
DGRachel @Ashley_Nicoletto I love it, too! I haven‘t finished the books from my first set, but I know they are all emotionally heavy. I was able to make comments and request something lighter because I know I need that mentally right now, and they responded with those comments in mind. I appreciate that so much. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @DGRachel That‘s wonderful! This will be my third set and I haven‘t finished either of the last two. Sometimes the rec is a great one, but not right for that moment in my life. Can I ask what they recommended the first time around? 6y

DGRachel @Ashley_Nicoletto Of course! I‘ll tag them in the next 3 comments. 😊 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto Ohhh. Interesting. I loved Girls Burn Brighter, but Girls Made of Snow and Glass has been on my TBR forever. 6y

❣️Three girls.
Three boys.
By the end of a summer filled with romantic misunderstandings, witty machinations, and daring escapades, they‘ll either all be enemies....or they‘ll all be in love.❣️

This sparkling retelling of Shakespeare‘s Much Ado About Nothing is an uproarious battle of wits with a 1920s twist.

I love this cover 😍

Ah, Beatrice & Benedick. The love/hate relationship that puts all other love/hate relationships to shame. Much Ado is my favorite of Shakespeare‘s comedies, & George rewrites it *just* enough to make it even better — adding new dimensions to the characters & their interactions with each other so that you‘re riveted to the page, rooting for every one of them. The setting, too, added a layer of intrigue & mayhem. An exciting, delightful romp. ★★★★☆.

Soubhiville No, but the cover is really pretty! 7y

MarriedtoMrT I haven‘t read it yet but @angieville has a glowing review on her blog and Forever Young Adult had some pretty great things to say, too: http://foreveryoungadult.com/2018/01/10/speak-easy-speak-love/ 7y

I couldn‘t resist this deal. I‘ve heard great things about this book and love a Much Ado retelling. I currently have it in print from the library but enjoy multiple formats and the chance to support the author at a wallet-friendly price. 😉

Day 7 of #febinbooks18 is red or #pinkcovers. I decided to go with pink and discovered it is probably one of the least represented colors on my shelves. I wonder if it is subconscious. 🤔 I am looking forward to Speak Easy though, has anyone read it?

Had to dig for today‘s #riotgrams because most of my hardcovers are library books or collector‘s editions. But here‘s a temporary naked book that was a gift from my bestie - a retelling of Much Ado About Nothing that I absolutely loved, song with some of those pesky collector‘s editions. And a bonus wedding photo!

SkeletonKey Torchwood/Dr Who, I see you!! 7y
daniwithtea @SkeletonKey ha ha yes that‘s our DW/TW shelf! My husband and I met at a Doctor Who convention. We were both cosplaying Jack Harkness. 😁 7y
SkeletonKey @daniwithtea - Ah that‘s wonderful 💜💜💜 I want a Jack jacket. 7y
daniwithtea I have one! Made it out of a surplus military coat. Not particularly screen-accurate (my husband‘s is much better, but he‘s a costume designer, so of course it is). 7y

Wonderful setting + gangsters + prohibition + one smart ass father = awesome Much Ado About Nothing retelling.
I kinda loved everyone and want to live in this house now. Oh the romantic drama was so good! And I love how the girls have careers and aren't just fawning over guys for the whole book...plus there's an interracial romance...in the US...in the 1920s
Highly recommend!

I am in so much love with Beatrice and Benedict!...and the setting...and the mobsters...and the dialogue!

I'm up to page 151 and passing out.

CaramelLunacy I love a Much Ado retelling! I will add this to the list...and maybe go pick up The Only Thing Worse Than Me is You, which I think is also a retelling of Much Ado! 7y
