Before She Sleeps
Before She Sleeps: A Novel | Bina Shah
13 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
A haunting dystopian thriller from the acclaimed author of A Season for Martyrs Fans of The Handmaids Tale wont want to miss this one (Publishers Weekly, starred review). In modern, beautiful Green City, the capital of Southwest Asia, gender selection, war, and disease have brought the ratio of men to women to alarmingly low levels. The government uses terror and technology to control its people, and now females must take multiple husbands to have children as quickly as possible. Yet there are some who resist, women who live in an underground collective and refuse to be part of the system. Secretly protected by the highest echelons of power, they emerge only at night to provide the rich and elite of Green City a type of commodity no one can buy: intimacy without sex. As it turns out, not even the most influential men can shield them from discovery and the dangers of ruthless punishment. This dystopian novel from one of Pakistans most talented writers is a modern-day parable, The Handmaids Tale for repressed women in Muslim countries everywhere. Before She Sleeps takes the patriarchal practices of female seclusion and veiling, gender selection, and control over womens bodies, amplifying and distorting them in a truly terrifying way to imagine a world of post-religious authoritarianism.

I'm not entirely sure what to say about this book.

I didn't love it, but I did find it compelling in a melancholic way. Parts were reminiscent of A Handmaid's Tale, if it were set in a different culture and told from a slightly different perspective.

Overall, I'm still going to call it a pick, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. Read with caution. This is not a happy story, but it does have important things to say.

What does a cat on a chair have in common with my reading habits?

They're both inscrutable.

Started a new book over the last day or so and at about 100 pages, I'm still not sure what I think of this one.

Really cool idea but felt underdeveloped. There was major potential and it was interesting it just wasn‘t extraordinary.

Good concept, believable post apocalyptic new world, interesting story. I found the writing a little cliched though and it was a bit predictable.

JennyM The cover is cool 6y

With only 4 days left in 2018, I need to finish 3 books to reach my goal. This year has been in incredibly difficult, which is why I'm so behind on my reading. But my dad is miraculously still alive and was able to travel to Boston for Christmas. He visited Maine for the first time, where he took this photo of me. He flew home today, so now that he's not talking my ears off, I can knock out a couple books😊

Nebklvr Blessings. Some things are more important than arbitrarily self-imposed challenges. 6y
