Jade City
Jade City | Fonda Lee
FAMILY IS DUTY. MAGIC IS POWER. HONOR IS EVERYTHING. Magical jade -- mined, traded, stolen, and killed for -- is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. For centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation. When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone -- even foreigners -- wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones -- from their grandest patriarch to the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets -- and of Kekon itself. JADE CITY begins an epic tale of family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of jade and blood.

When I first read this (in 2017) I liked it but not enough that I bought the second and third books as soon as they came out—that only happened this weekend after I started rereading the tagged book. I liked this story of an island where the wearing of jade imbues some people with special powers (more or less) a bit more the second time around and I look forward to seeing where Lee takes the story—most reviewers say the third book is the best!

A super cool book with an awesome underworld crime world building to an upcoming war. With some awesome characters and commentary of culture and the struggle between excepting and new,or holding onto the old way.

This was a great ride and definitely recommend reading it

A soft pick, really.
It took me 8 days to finish it but not because I was not enjoying it. Well, I didn‘t at first.
I found the world-building to be well done, although it's a whole new world for me. It took me a few chapters before I finally understood the jargon.
I'm not overly excited to continue reading the rest, but I am still intrigued.

lumbricuslibri More thoughts: I was really excited to read this but was disappointed, a little. Again, would still be very interested to read the rest, but will wait to start JW tomorrow. 1y
kwmg40 I'd encourage you to continue. This first book was a soft pick for me too, but I liked the second better and the third was fantastic, packing a big punch at the end because of all the set-up that happened before. 1y
lumbricuslibri @kwmg40 Thank you! Yep, reading Jade War now. It is better than City. Oohh, now I‘m excited to finish this so I can hop onto Legacy! 1y
kwmg40 I hope you enjoy both! 1y

This #book has been in my library for ages!!

But I finally got around to it because #netgalley. And it's so good?! Or like 4.5 good. I felt like it was losing steam towards the end. Like, there was a lot going on but idk, I was feeling frustrated because of everything that was going on. It's not a fun read 🥹 or at least, it wasn't anymore after a certain point 😔 now I'm in pain 😭 I'm curious to see what happens next but also, am I ready??

Such a good book. This is a re-read so I can read the rest of the trilogy

Great world-building, well-drawn characters and a plot that has twists and turns galore.
Jade is a magical item in this world, giving those who can wear it, powers of perception and strength. But it only exists on one small island. Everyone wants it.

Moving on to next in the series.

#UnpopularOpinion

This reads like written by an OWM. I know it's not, but that's what it feels to me. Few female characters. Slow pace. Several Deus Ex Machina situations in favour of one character.

Will not continue the series.

When the internet goes out, you get a lot of reading done 🤓

Finished Jade City by Fonda Lee and I loved it! The ending did make me sad and I wished it hadn‘t ended the exact way it did, but I‘m hoping the next two books will redeem that for me. Looking forward to continuing on with this series!

readwithcori @catiewithac besides having to go without internet for a bit, we were fine. Between that and the weather, a lot of surrounding neighborhoods lost power so we were lucky there! Things are now back to normal from what we can tell. 2y

Enjoyed this book, although it took me 2 months to get through it. I appreciate the focus point veing the Kauls as a family, rather than a few main characters, and the issues arising from familial ties and expectations. I wish the intrigue and action had picked up sooner, but I enjoyed what the book set up for the sequel, and I want to see how many more plot points I can predict!

This was an excellent, original epic start to a speculative series. Part fantasy, part family drama, it is truly original and I look forward to continuing this series. The magic system is very cool and the writing is top notch. The only reason I didn‘t give it 5 stars was due to the audiobook losing my attention at a few moments. 4.5⭐️

I've been reading a lot of fantasy lately, which is nice. I used to read scifi/fantasy exclusively, but since I've expanded my reading, I find myself reading less and less of it. This year I decided to fix that. Every time I read one, I'm reminded why this is my favorite genre. See below for my ratings and very brief thoughts on each title 👇

AutumnRLS Jade City: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Brilliant writing with unexpected twits and turns. Can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy! 3y
AutumnRLS The Traitor Baru Cormorant: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one suffered due to poor narration. This book deserved better I think. I almost want to reread this in trade paperback format to see if there's a big difference in my level of enjoyment. 3y
AutumnRLS A Conjuring of Light ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A solid conclusion to the trilogy with room to continue later with these characters or others within this world. 3y
AutumnRLS The Bear and the Nightingale: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Beautifully written and I had no idea where this was going to land by the end. Can be read as a stand-alone, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next two! 3y
AutumnRLS Record of a Spaceborn Few: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: There is just something magical about Becky Chambers. She always manages to perfectly hit upon what it means to be human; with all its faults, eccentricities, and love. This book was no exception. I continued to think about it long after it was done and placed back on my shelf. 3y

Great writing, but a little too character driven for me. I definitely respect this book and understand why it is loved by many. However, I was expecting a lot of action, and this just didn‘t deliver. I still plan on picking up the second book at some point in hopes that the title Jade WAR means more external than internal conflict.

It‘s been a loooong time since I‘ve read an Adult Fantasy book, and boy am I out of practice! 😅 The audiobook is like 19 hours long (😫) so it took me a while to get through, but it‘s definitely an interesting story. Full of family drama, clan power struggles, political intrigue, and a fair amount of violence. If that sounds like your thing, check it out!

So third time was the charm and I managed to finally finish this one. It was very much a slow burn for me at first and I didn't really get into it for a while but once I was in I read it straight through. I've never really consumed many gangster type stories so the fact that this is all about honorable gangs was kind of a new thing for me. The story was left in an interesting place but I'm not ready to read more.

I chose this book as a 2nd title to try in the grimdark sub-genre. It‘s described as a kung-fu fantasy that‘s heavily influenced by The Godfather series. Which sounds awesome. And though I enjoyed the author‘s world-building and magic concept, after 2 hours of listening I realized I didn‘t care about any of the characters. This book is action-driven, while my favorite things to read focus on character development.

🎧 Audible has been having a 2-for-1 sale that ends tonight ... I‘ve wanted to avoid it was down to 3 credits. Well yes I bought 3 new credits recently as I pre-ordered The Trouble With Peace. I love grim dark and A Little Hatred was my favorite book by Joe Abercrombie to date. 3.5 out of 5 🌟 I fell in love with the world building that focuses in Godfather/Kungfu/Samurai with a touch of magic gained from Jade stone to enhance physical and perceptions prowess.

What I love most in Jade City is how much each characters are evolving throughout the book. I rarely find a book, where I admire almost all the characters in it but Jade City surely changed that.
