Mothering Sunday: A Romance | Graham Swift
122 posts | 81 read | 1 reading | 106 to read
A luminous, intensely moving tale that begins with a secret lovers assignation in the spring of 1924, then unfolds to reveal the whole of a remarkable life. Twenty-two-year-old Jane Fairchild has worked as a maid at an English country house since she was sixteen. For almost all of those years she has been the clandestine lover to Paul Sheringham, young heir of a neighboring house. The two now meet on an unseasonably warm March dayMothering Sundaya day that will change Janes life forever. As the narrative moves back and forth from 1924 to the end of the century, what we know and understand about Janeabout the way she loves, thinks, feels, sees, remembersexpands with every vividly captured moment. Her story is one of profound self-discovery, and through her, Graham Swift has created an emotionally soaring, deeply affecting work of fiction. From the Hardcover edition.

The novella could be seen to take place on just one day: Mothering Sunday 1924 but although the central narrative is the dominant majority, we get glimpses into the entirety of the life of Jane Fairchildes, orphan, lover and more than maid. Post War, death is a secondary character stalking the pages of Jane and those around her.

Tagged book is one of my faves! So beautiful! And I just saw that a movie is in post-production right now!

Today is always a rough day for me, and many, many others. My beautiful mum has early onset Alzheimer‘s and at only 70, no longer knows who I am, and I wasn‘t able to become a mum myself because of my husband‘s CF.
I just wanted to wish all the Litten mums a lovely day, and send love to all who struggle today. I‘m thinking of you too 💕

I knew from the cover that this was “a romance”. And I‘ve heard from friends that it was “sexy”. And it is both of those things. But more than that, it‘s a book about now and about one March day in 1924, and about people and thoughts and how life is. Surprisingly wonderful.

I have mixed feelings towards this. Didn‘t like the writing style. All too mashed up for my taste, on the one hand. But on the other hand I can‘t imagine that this was supposed to be a rather fast bedtime-read. I needed a while to get “the point”, to understand the books‘ statement. And it‘s for that I rate it a “Pick”. It reminds me of a book that I read in middle school and that I really loved. I still seem to have a weak spot for those stories.

March 30 1924, Jane, a young maid, are seeing a young man, her secret lover. Who he is, isn‘t revealed until later. It‘s Mothering Sunday, a day that changed Jane for ever and turned her into the person she become.

I don‘t know what else to write without given spoilers.
But the novel/ novella (it‘s 134p) makes you think about how one day can change everything.

Both Mr. Salary and The Yellow Wallpaper are short, but Mr. Salary reminded me of how much I love Sally Rooney‘s writing and that I need to read her debut. Next up is Mothering Sunday.

My all time favorite novella. Just so much gorgeous writing and emotional punch packed in this wee book.
It captures a warm English spring day in 1924, yet also manages to reflect on a whole life lived, unraveling in a single narrative that flutters between time and place with ease. It captures both the bittersweet nature of looking back at the end of an affair, and also how single moments can influence a whole life. 💕

I've been reading this gift, even though normally, perhaps ungraciously, I am deeply suspicious of books I do not choose myself.

I found the first few pages annoying, a feeling only heightened by the juxtaposition of a bare-breasted young woman in repose with the smirking wrinkled face of Graham Swift.

But then it was all quietly confident poetry. I'm partway through, and though I half guessed an early twist, it still shocked me breathless.

Jane the maid has a day off work in 1924 & visits her lover. A beautiful, spare book, very moving. Tinged by the sadness of WW1 and its aftermath, but buoyed by the hope of Jane's future, even as she feels nostalgia for the present. Told with restraint and English understatement, the background of the adults who have lost children & Jane, who was a foundling, is poignant & true to life. She's a strong character. A bed features, hence the pic. 😉

Tamra I really enjoy that style of writing. I'll check it out. 7y

This is not a book that screams "look at me!! I'm trying to be the next blockbuster movie! I have plot twists on every page!"

Instead this book is a warm English day. A fine glass of wine. A lovely garden to walk through and enjoy. A bike ride through the countryside. It's a quiet and thoughtful moment of reflection. No cheap thrills here - just excellent writing and story-telling.

A marvellous and beautifully written novel, as good as anything else that Graham Swift has written, which is saying a lot. See my goodreads review at: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33817020-mothering-sunday
