The Portable Veblen
The Portable Veblen: A Novel | Elizabeth Mckenzie
An exuberant, one-of-a-kind novel about love and family, war and nature, new money and old values by a brilliant New Yorker contributorThe Portable Veblen is a dazzlingly original novel thats as big-hearted as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Set in and around Palo Alto, amid the culture clash of new money and old (antiestablishment) values, and with the specter of our current wars looming across its pages, The Portable Veblen is an unforgettable look at the way we live now. A young couple on the brink of marriagethe charming Veblen and her fianc Paul, a brilliant neurologistfind their engagement in danger of collapse. Along the way they weather everything from each others dysfunctional families, to the attentions of a seductive pharmaceutical heiress, to an intimate tte--tte with a very charismatic squirrel. Veblen (named after the iconoclastic economist Thorstein Veblen, who coined the term conspicuous consumption) is one of the most refreshing heroines in recent fiction. Not quite liberated from the burdens of her hypochondriac, narcissistic mother and her institutionalized father, Veblen is an amateur translator and freelance self; in other words, shes adrift. Meanwhile, Paulthe product of good hippies who were bad parentsfinds his ambition soaring. His medical research has led to the development of a device to help minimize battlefield brain traumaan invention that gets him swept up in a high-stakes deal with the Department of Defense, a Bizarro World that McKenzie satirizes with granular specificity. As Paul is swept up by the promise of fame and fortune, Veblen heroically keeps the peace between all the damaged parties involved in their upcoming wedding, until she finds herself falling for someoneor somethingelse. Throughout, Elizabeth McKenzie asks: Where do our families end and we begin? How do we stay true to our ideals? And what is that squirrelreallythinking? Replete with deadpan photos and sly appendices,The Portable Veblenis at once an honest inquiry into what we look for in love and an electrifying reading experience.

If you're looking for a feel good read that doesn't take itself too seriously (which I was since I'm on vacation) than I think you will enjoy this. Yes, it's silly but at the same time refreshing

The Dog of the North wasn‘t in, so I borrowed Veblen (named after the iconoclastic economist Thorstein Veblen, who coined the term “conspicuous consumption” by her hypochondriac mother and institutionalized father.) A whirlwind romance with Paul (scientist scooped up by industrial pharma, hoping to make big bucks on the backs of IED damaged soldiers + the DoD) leads to a lot of interesting situations. And a number of squirrels. Very witty!

squirrelbrain Thanks for the tag @jenniferw88 - I have a (physical) copy of this on my TBR shelf but just haven‘t got round to reading it! 2y
Reggie I loved this book. Their backstories were very crazypants if I remember correctly. Paul is raised in a hippie commune doing psychedelics right? I love when she calls that woman who has her hooks into Paul as that predatory insect. I can‘t remember it right now. 2y
Aimeesue @Reggie Crazypants is right! Paul‘s parents were pot growers back in the day, and I just came across some casual ref from Veblen about how they had to go drop off a brown paper wrapped package in the park. You know, like you do. 😂 I‘m really enjoying it! 2y

Honestly, this was just too...silly for me. I think the oddness was supposed to be quirky and charming but it just fell flat. E characters speak like twelve-year-olds and l every interaction grates horribly. The juxtaposition of more serious topics (pharmaceutical profiteering, war injuries, mental illness) in this childish context felt insincere and in poor taste. I'm frankly astounded it was shortlisted for the Women's Prize

cjk I abandoned this one early on- I just didn‘t like it. 🤷‍♀️ (edited) 5y
Moray_Reads @cjk it was definitely a chore to finish. I'm glad it's over! 5y

saresmoore Every time I spot this one on the shelf, I think about taking it down for a read. Now I‘m really eager to get to it, so I can pass it along if I hate it! 😅 5y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore it's a really weird mixture of silly and faux-serious that I just didn't get. Either might have been okay but both together didn't work 5y
saresmoore I just picked it up and read the first 20 pages. I already see what you mean about the dialogue and the tone—it‘s childish without the innocence. The prose is odd & stilted, too. 5y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore I agree. the whole thing just felt off to me. I've seen it compared to Eleanor Oliphaunt and I hated that one but I still think it was much better written than Veblen
5y
saresmoore Too funny that Veblen and Eleanor are shelf neighbors in my library. I think I need some better turquoise books. 😆 5y

Saw this in a bookshop in Whitby and had to have it... On the blurb Ursula K. Le Guin said ‘...the squirreliest novel I ever read. I enjoyed it completely‘

It sounds a bit weird actually, but I couldn‘t not. Also featured is my new squirrel friend, bought from a rock/gem shop in Robin Hood‘s Bay.

Somewhat disappointing. The vapid conversations, the childish voice of the narrator, and the immature behavior of the characters was off putting. I was probably bothered by this more than most.

4/5🐿.This books was a great end to 2017 (unless I can squeeze one more in). An odd couple looking to marry after four months of dating find themselves struggling to control the world from spinning out of control. Paul, a neurologist, tries erase his past, while Veblen tries to embrace everything about herself. And she really likes squirrels. Would highly recommend.

If October was dedicated to spooky reads, and November was all about non-fiction, then December is going to be my "finish what you started" month, where I try to finish next in series that I haven't read, reading goals from the beginning of the year (That's you, Dr Zhivago), and books I started, but got distracted before I finished. This was on my #tbr list forever! Finally got around to it and I‘m glad I did. The quirk in this book is unlike anything I‘ve ever encountered in a novel before. Loved it! There are images throughout the text, a squirrel who may(?) communicate with humans, and two dysfunctional families. Though there is quirk galore, it is totally readable and serious on the commentary on current affairs and American politics and environmentalism. 🐿

This was the most readable book I've come across in a while, with its balance of characters you want to hug and ones you want to smack. This story is about so many things including the invisible scars our families can leave on us, finding one's place in the world, and, yes, conversing with squirrels. A thoroughly enjoyable read! I'll be honest, it was a bit of a slow start, but once I got into it the characters were all very entertaining. Quirky, fun and at times, moving. It would probably help if you like squirrels -
They really do feature quite prominently!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this modern story of love, imperfect families, scientific endeavor and squirrels.
Some of it was overly simplistic, especially the Hutmacher caricature, but my enjoyment of it was saved by Veblen. I loved her sympathy for Lima beans and nutkinista fantasies, interspersed with radical socialist rankings from the original Veblen.
A perfect light read!

shawnmooney I loved this book soooooo much! It was really great on audio. 8y

Went to scan my new currently reading with the Goodreads app wow, it's so sparkly and reads just the cover now?! ✨

Stolen/borrowed this book from my partner @BooksGirlsCats ... it looks interesting and quirky! 🐿

Bookchipmunk I love this one! It is set in my home town 🤓 8y
Lauredhel Oh, I didn't know it could scan the cover now! Neat. Would love it if we could scan books into Litsy. (We can't, can we?) 8y
athorne @Lauredhel I would be happy with a Goodreads import. 8y
Lauredhel @EMJenkinson so long as you could set it up to be an ongoing thing, not just one off. *nods* 8y
Kitta @EMJenkinson @Lauredhel I'd love to be able to scan barcodes or covers for litsy! And an ongoing Goodreads import. Plus maybe a litsy import for Goodreads for my now massive tbr list. 😅 8y
