The Talented Mr. Ripley
The Talented Mr. Ripley | Patricia Highsmith
"Tom Ripley is one of the most interesting characters in world literature."Anthony Minghella, director of ?The Talented Mr. Ripley Since his debut in 1955, Tom Ripley has evolved into the ultimate bad boy sociopath. Here, in this first Ripley novel, we are introduced to suave Tom Ripley, a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley meets a wealthy industrialist who hires him to bring his playboy son, Dickie Greenleaf, back from gallivanting in Italy. Soon Ripley's fascination with Dickie's debonair lifestyle turns obsessive as he finds himself enraged by Dickie's ambivalent affections for Marge, a charming American dilettante. A dark reworking of Henry James's ?The Ambassadors?, ?The Talented Mr. Ripley? serves as an unforgettable introduction to this smooth confidence man, whose talent for murder and self-invention is chronicled in four subsequent Ripley novels.

I read some really great books in August, Rules of Civility was a reread and it held up just as great 10 yrs on, I really love this book.

Honorable mentions to Annie Bot, Mad Women's Ball, and Evil Eye but my most liked book this month was Talented Mr Ripley and I was so excited to learn it is a series (I have ordered the next 2!)

Overall a solid reading month.

I was glad that I had forgotten most of the movie when I read this - I think it made it a better reading experience. I am curious about how the book was received by the general public when it was published. This was my August #doublespin selection.

Oh I loved this!! I didn't realize it was a series, and I am excited to continue Toms twisted journey. I loved the setting of 1950s Italy and the players that moved in and out of the story, the stakes are high throughout. Thinking a lot about the time frame how Tom was able to get away with so much more than he would today. I really enjoyed Highsmith's writing and story telling it is utterly compelling.
A perfect summer read.

lil1inblue I'm currently in the middle of this. I'm really liking it! I didn't know it was a series, either, but I'll definitely be reading more! 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @lil1inblue excited to see what you think! Tom was an annoying character that took me a bit to get use to but the story is so great it seemed like he needed to be that way 4mo

this one had been in my TBR for ages, even taken out of the list, thinking I would get to it another time. But we watched the Netflix series recently and now I want to know if book Ripley is more like the Damon movie, the NFseries or the American Friend movie...anyway hoping to read most of it on a 2h flight.

My next 4 books for #52bookclub24
The series made me re-read one of my all-time favourites, The Talented Mr Ripley, and enjoyed it immensely. The Hobbit was a good read, but fantasy is still not my cup of tea. The Man Called Ove was a disappointment, I'd read from and loved Backman before, but this one, I just couldn't warm up to it. Slaughterhouse Five made me think. A lot.

Gatsby, had Nick‘s obsession consumed and haunted him into dishonesty and fraud. A good story that felt like a longer read than it actually was, given the narrative‘s deep dive into the brain of Tom Ripley.

I loved rereading ROTK, but nothing of the new reads really jumps out at me. However, I did enjoy Ripley enough to deem it my favorite book read in November. It took me forever to read it, but once I got some momentum it moved pretty quickly. #wrapup

tokorowilliamwallace I need to get to the book, but Ripley is one of my favorite 90s films or example 90s acting I love. I do hope to get to The Vaster Wilds, and Return of the King was absolutely my favorite section/book of Lord of the Rings. I loved the descriptions of the Stair of Cirith Ungol. Looks like a good run of selections this past month. 12mo

Ripley, full of self loathing, ashamed of his social standing & frustrated with his inability to fit in where he wants to the most, finds some happiness entertaining others at social gatherings with his impersonations & mimicry of others. The chance to actually steal the identity of another is this sociopath‘s natural progression. The tension built as the net tightens and his subterfuge could be revealed is what powers this tight, smart novel along

Bookwomble I enjoyed this first installment, but found my interest waning the further through the series I got. Highsmith's lack of understanding of the genius of Lou Reed's Transformer album in one of the later novels finally did for me 😏 1y
bthegood I saw the movie years ago - enjoyed it - did not know it was adapted from a novel (should have known, most are right?) - added this to my TBR - thanks for the review 🙂 1y
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble ahhh…I think when I get to that book I‘ll be ignorant of his genius too. Hope I don‘t disappoint, but the only Lou Reed song I know is the one A Tribe Called Quest sampled. But I‘m always ready to be educated. I‘ll give the next one a go as I liked the previous Highsmiths that I‘ve read 1y

The_Book_Ninja @bthegood You‘re welcome! I need to watch that movie now the book is fresh in my mind. I will say, if you buy the version I reviewed, don‘t read the introduction as it‘s got unnecessary spoilers in it 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Given how transgressive Ripley is, Transformer might have been on his wavelength, but I guess it speaks of a different kind of transgression. Have you not heard Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side"? It's pretty famous ? Takes its title from a Nelson Algren novel ? 1y
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble yes, that‘s the only song I know, sampled by ATCQ for “Can I Kick It?” Apparently he took 100% of the royalties. Back in the days sample clearance/permission wasn‘t treated with due diligence. 1y

Reviews of this novel often describe 2 sides of Mr Ripley - one that is human and likeable and the other that is dark and despicable. The novel is mostly driven by Ripley‘s paranoia and fear of being caught. And while his internal struggles are real and understandable I could not find any sympathy for him. I also found it implausible that other characters did not draw suspicions of Mr Ripley. In this respect his talents seem overly contrived.

I remember watching the film starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, & Gwyneth Paltrow years ago, so being able to picture the actors as the characters helped bring them to life. Tom seems to be a sociopath, his inner monologues & disregard for anyone he feels he cannot use is well-documented here. I thought it was a great read and I have every intention of reading the rest of the series. 4🌟

Well Tom Ripley had a lovely European holiday alright!
This book absolutely engrossed me and I didn‘t want to put it down. Just what I needed at the moment. I did find myself feeling a little anxious as I went about some chores today and had to remind myself that I wasn‘t the character in the book! That‘s some good psychological writing when you‘ve been in a character‘s head and start feeling the weight of his problems.⬇️

The Tom we meet here is not yet the coolly sophisticated sociopath of the later novels, and much of the fascination lies in seeing his self-confidence grow as he realises he is indeed much more talented than even he first suspected. The writing is superbly controlled - everything is seen from Tom's POV and we have no access to any information or thought processes that he doesn't have, which makes for a slightly claustrophobic reading experience.

This one has been on my TBR pile since forever, but thanks to it being my #DoubleSpin this month, I‘ve finally read it 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼.

On the surface, Ripley is a despicable character, capable of cold-blooded murder, but Highsmith draws a character who appears to suffer from some sort of mental illness (antisocial personality disorder?) and I found myself having some sympathy for him.

I don‘t normally read thrillers but this was well-written, glamorous, edge of my seat escapism and it was just what I needed after some heavy reads and the UK being a toilet rn (though when was it last not a toilet??).
