Start with Why
Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action | Simon Sinek
Why do you do what you do? Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and moer profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over? People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers might have little in common, but they all started with why. It was their natural ability to start with why that enabled them to inspire those around them and to achieve remarkable things. In studying the leaders who've had the greatest influence in the world, Simon Sinek discovered that they all think, act, and communicate in the exact same way -- and it's the complete opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be lead, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY. Any organization can explain what it does; some can explain how they do it; but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not money or profit-- those are always results. WHY does your organization exist? WHY does it do the things it does? WHY do customers really buy from one company or another? WHY are people loyal to some leaders, but not others? Starting with WHY works in big business and small business, in the nonprofit world and in politics. Those who start with WHY never manipulate, they inspire. And the people who follow them don't do so because they have to; they follow because they want to. Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, Sinek weaves together a clear vision of what it truly takes to lead and inspire. This book is for anyone who wants to inspire others or who wants to find someone to inspire them.

So many questions but let‘s start with WHY is there a large Muppet in this storefront?
#audiowalk #audiobook

ImperfectCJ The balcony was unavailable? 2mo
Ruthiella @ImperfectCJ 😂😂😂 2mo
marleed 😂😂 I hope his partner is doing okay 🤣. I have a 2 yo grandson who loves 2–3 inch figures. He‘s currently renamed with the Sesame Street gang. Well, was. I was concerned his lack of knowledge of Kermit and Miss Piggy so purchased a set of five Muppet Baby figures. Animal is his new favorite object. Muppet merchandise is currently not a big marketing toy so the search is on! 2mo

tournevis Better question: why is Waldorf alone? Where is Statler? 2mo
Sharpeipup @imperfectcj touché but there was no balcony 2mo
Sharpeipup @tournevis those were on my list of questions 2mo
ImperfectCJ @Sharpeipup Well, I guess he had to find an alternative then. :-) What I'm trying to figure out is the warm clothing the people in the reflection are wearing. With as hot as it still is where I am, it's very difficult to imagine wanting to wear a stocking cap 2mo

Captivating! I want to look up Sinek‘s other works now. This concept is so seemingly simple, but without the why, most efforts will prove unsustainable. Sinek offers so many examples and journeys where companies got this right and wrong. It‘s very thought provoking! It‘s also applicable to our individual and personal lives.

I found the constant capitalisation of WHY, HOW and WHAT to be incredibly distracting. But that may have been a good thing because this felt quite repetitive, even given its short length.

Book 2/24 for #ReadingRandomizer

slategreyskies I‘ve never heard of the reading randomizer challenge. I‘m thinking about it, but I‘m such a mood reader that I‘m not sure I‘d actually do the ones that got chosen for me. 🤣 3y
janeycanuck @slategreyskies I found it on Storygraph. A lot of my TBR are books that every time I look at them, I think “man, I want to read that” so this is good for helping me choose. And sure enough - almost every title that came up as I was doing my picks, I said “ooh, I can‘t wait to read that!” 3y

On June 20th, I launched a Burnout Recovery Coaching program, geared specifically towards folx who work in political spaces. I started reading this book the day I launched and I‘m now really looking forward to doing an Instagram story tomorrow about my own why — about how helping political people stay happy and centered is my way of contributing to ALL the political causes that I feel strongly about…I want to help the people who help people. ✌🏻

ChasingOm If you want to watch one of the author‘s TED talks, I highly recommend this one. I used to send it to my candidates when they decided they wanted to run for office: https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action/up-next?l... 3y
SamAnne Oh, interested in this. I have been in conservation work for 30 plus years and recently hit a wall. I work on fisheries/river restoration in the West and it has just felt like the apocalypse. 3y
ChasingOm Oh gosh, @SamAnne, yes. My parents had a three week river trip to Montana planned this month and they had to cancel it last week because of how bad it is. 💔 You‘re doing important work! 3y

There were some nifty nuggets. A fair amount of repetition marred my overall experience; but it definitely gave me some food for thought. I didn‘t care for the author as narrator: he pronounces some words so oddly that it was like nails on a chalkboard.

ReadingEnvy I like him in TED talk length or interview length but I read another of his books and it was excruciatingly needlessly stretched out. 6y

It‘s Spring Book Club time at the Firm. This selection from the leadership team really gets to the core of doing business. And specifically served to remind me (amid all of the goings on) WHY I get out of the bed every morning. Must read for leaders—informal ones, too! There‘s a 15 minutes TED talk from Simon that is a great introduction to this book. #bookclub #leadership

First encounter with this writer. I was unsure what I was going to get with this (if it was about working or time management), but honestly it was a book that really helps you to speak to why you do everything. I mean it can help you understand the motivations behind your work or help you focus on why you do things in your work life or in your own business. A really deeper through provoking book than I was expecting.
