The Book with No Pictures
The Book with No Pictures | B. J. Novak
54 posts | 96 read | 26 to read
You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here's how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . . Blork. Or Bluurf. And even if the words include things like Blaggity Blaggityand My Head is Made of Blueberry Pizza! That's the rule. That's the deal. Brilliantly irreverent and very, very silly, The Book With No Pictures will delight kids and have them begging for more. From award-winning US comic writer and actor, B. J. Novak.

Wednesday night I had a free ballet class as one of my ballet teachers is opening her own studio. I walked there on account of the Little Free Library I knew was on the way. Score! This photo is from my bath as I perused my finds afterwards. It was a bloody hot night and I dripped sweat onto the sprung floor before I even left the barre.

IuliaC This sounds like a great night! 2y

The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak is a humorous RF book that has NO pictures. This book forces the reader to make silly sounds. I would use this book in my classroom as a RA because it would most definitely entertain your students.

This book made me smile while I was reading it. How often do you get to shout out “boo boo butt”!? 😂 This is a book that understands the power of oral storytelling and forces you to read aloud. We gotta engage with our kids and pass on a love of words and stories.

Liz_M That looks amazing! 5y
AshleyHoss820 @Liz_M I realize it‘s not anything earth-shattering, but it was fun! And my kids laughed! So...it‘s a win! 😄😄😄 5y

RF/ RA
This book may not contain much "literary value" in the standard sence but it can be a fun read aloud, good example to model pitch, tone & pacing.
I like this book b/c it introduces kids to the idea that books without pictures can still be fun! Gasp!

The Book With No Pictures (NF, NYT Bestseller, Buzzfeed & Amazon Best Picture Book) by B.J. Novak — yes, Ryan from The Office — is a sort of anti-picture book that intentionally looks boring on the outside but is HILARIOUS as a RA because it is intended for an adult to make a fool of themselves in front of a child. #LAE3414sp19

cwright https://create.piktochart.com/output/37528494-knighted-rc This is a Piktochart I used for my seminar on the Responsive Classroom Model. While reading, I daydreamed of reading this between greeting and sharing of a morning meeting, either toward the beginning of school or the day of a big test, and then to have the sharing be that every student would make the funniest nonsense sound/sentence they could think of and have everyone repeat it. This is fiction and is a New York Times Best Seller. It can be used in class as a RA, SR, DR, CR or PR. #UCFLAE3414SP18
This is a very unique book and had never seen anything like it. It is exactly what it sounds like! This book encourages the reader to get silly with their audience and there‘s nothing students love more than hearing their teacher make all kinds of silly noises! Every classroom should have a copy of this book!

AndreaG I love this idea...forcing kids to use their creativity to make things interesting. Also, I love that BJ Novak wrote it. He was a writer on one of my favorite shows: The Office 7y
Cruzdia1 A UDL strategy that pairs well with this book is 1.3: Offer alternatives for visual information. This strategy is perfect because this book does not have any illustrations and therefore in order to make the text interesting and fun for students the teacher must read it in an animated way and essentially present the information in a different way! 7y
Cruzdia1 ESOL Strategies that pair well with this book are: 25 and 14. By acting out many of the things in this story allows second language learners to follow along easily because of the heavy use of gestures. 7y

The book with no pictures is a F RA book and New York Times Bestseller, written by B.J. Novak. This explains how a book with no pictures can be no fun at all, until you read on. It continues with silly comments like “boo boo butt” that the reader HAS to say because thats the rule of a book! I would use UDL guideline 7.1 because this book can be a fun way for students to get creative. I would use ESOL strategy 16 to integrate their creativity.

Brittanyradzak http://readingtokids.org/Books/BookView.php?pag=4&bookID=00001280&pview=yes this website gives you information about the book and activities you can do with the book! I love the idea of the children making their own book with whatever they want the reader to say! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

A little late for #day20 of the #augustphotochallenge so several of my #funnybooks have already been posted. Good choices, everyone! This is my students' favorite book, particularly my younger (5-7) students (would work for even younger kids, too). In a read-aloud, the reader has to read every word on the page out loud. Hilarity ensues. I have read this book to my K-2 classes soooo many times and they howl with laughter each and every time.

This book is always a delight for me to read. When I let others read it outloud it's the worst bc I want the laughs! This book is my test to my 8th graders to see if when I read it they still laugh, when they give me blank stares they are going to hell, and I cry. Just kidding but I totally tell them they suck if they don't laugh!

My kids love this book. They think it's the height of silliness and they have memorized every word. It does get a little annoying to read (or perhaps perform is more apt) after the fiftieth time but it's worth it for the peals of laughter that follow "Ba-dooongy-face" and admitting that your "only friend in the whole wide world is a hippo named Boo Boo Butt." #augustofpages #minimalistbookcover @TheSpinecrackersBookClub
