Once again reading retellings of classics, but wait! I have actually read and enjoyed Jane Eyre. As the title suggests, this is the story from Edward‘s perspective. We meet him as a young boy, and follow him up to and through the story we know of him meeting and falling in love with Jane. Your heart will break for him as a boy, you may dislike him as a young man, he may/may not redeem himself; thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really should be doing all the things on my to do list but I‘m reading more Jane Eyre adaptations instead.

Such a good adaptation— I like when a book is unapologetic about an antihero. Painting Rochester in full color is the great triumph of this book. Highly recommend to fans of the original. Shoemaker perfectly captures the Victorian tone without becoming ponderous.

19-20 Jun 23 (audiobook)
Jane Eyre told from the perspective of Mr Rochester, from his childhood, progressing through his difficult relationships with his father and brother and marriage to Bertha, and then the well-known story.
It isn‘t terrible but it did feel a little like fan fiction. And I don‘t like the fact that having read it, in future I will probably be confused as to what is actually in the Brontë text. Yep - I am a literary snob.

This was an interesting and thoughtful book that showed another side of a character not as well known, and one of the books that I recently accomplished reading. Trying to come back and post on LITSY again, just to show that I haven‘t forgotten. #recentlyread

Oh my goodness, Sarah, what a sweet surprise I had in my mailbox this morning! Thank you so much for being so thoughtful and spreading more #LitsyLove in the world! I look forward to reading this, but more importantly, I appreciate the sweet gesture of it. 💕🤗😘

Now, one burning question, how DO you find a list of those who have stacked a certain book on here?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Please share your wisdom! 😊🤣

@TheAromaofBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

TheAromaofBooks haha I'm so glad it arrived safely!! I'm not completely sure if it works the same way on the app, as I mostly use my desktop, but if you go to a book's page, just under the title it says “X Post | X read | X To Read“ - it is automatically showing the posts, but you can click on Read or To Read and see people who have stacked it! I'm kind of excited about using it as a way to give away other books to homes that want them!! 5y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks oh wow! That‘s so great to know, and yes, very helpful (and time-saving) for that reason! I mostly use the app but will definitely check that out on my desktop! Thanks again so much...you‘re so sweet! 💕 5y
See All 14 Comments
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I always go by the “tbr” list and hope it‘s correct!! 5y
robinb @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Yes, me too! 👍 But I wasn‘t aware that you could use this function on the desktop...having a list of Littens with TBRs for each book. Great, time-saving option! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - I may have been a little unclear, but basically it's another way of searching the TBRs - you can look at a specific book & see every person who currently has that book on their TBR... so if you already have a book & aren't sure who would like it, it's much easier to find a match than scrolling through people's lists, hoping to see the book you want to give away. Same info, different way to sort it!! 5y
TheAromaofBooks Side note - it doesn't look like you can access this option via the app, so computer only, apparently!! 5y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I‘m so glad you mentioned this, Sarah! It‘s going to save me tons of tedious time, and I‘m not sure when I would have found it as I use the app way more than the desktop (especially now that my husband is using computer at home for work). Thanks again for alerting me to this shortcut (and thank you @TimSpalding )! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheAromaofBooks hmmmm I‘m rarely on my laptop... I need to check that out! You may have to guide me!! 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheAromaofBooks when I look under the tab “to read” the people have already read it 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
robinb @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Misty, did you go to the book's description and click on “to read“ under the title of the book? I tried it on my desktop, and it seemed to work for me. 👍 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @robinb yes and then it to me to the pics people had posted. It had pics I had posted and other posts of people who had read the book... 5y
robinb @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Look at the very top where it has the book description, etc. Look under the title and it should have #posts, #read, #to read. Click on #to read and it tells you who has placed it on their TBR. 5y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Ok I‘ll look again!! 5y

A difficult one and I waver between a so-so and a pick. It's a slow start but there's a little too much of Rochester's early life that seems unnecessary. Jamaica is better and Shoemaker doesn't ignore the fact that Rochester's fortune is at least partly built on slavery. Inevitably the best parts follow his return to England and the arrival of Jane. There are some lovely and intriguing details added to the story we love but there are also some 👇

Moray_Reads Jarring errors of language and historical accuracy that occurred just a little too frequently to really let myself settle into the story 7y
batsy Have you read Wide Sargasso Sea? Just wondering if this is in any way comparable, though they do sound utterly different in terms of style & tone... 7y

As a child, I liked Jane Eyre better than Pride and Prejudice but as an adult I became aware that the plot is ... weird. This book is a fix it that shows events from Rochester 's point of view and makes some of his choices more understandable. I wish I had reread Jane Eyre first though as I spent a lot of time wondering 'is this part original?'

Since Jane Eyre is one of my all-time top favorite books, how could I resist a back-story about Mr. Rochester? I did enjoy this one and it sort of pulled at my heart strings. The development of interest in Jane was a little sparse. I've recently heard of a couple other Jane Eyre spin-offs...TBR🤓!

I adored this book. I totally understand that you have to use your imagination, because this is obviously one person's idea of Mr. Rochester and his story, but this be who Mr. Rochester is forever more. If you disliked him before, then I doubt you could after this. It felt very much in the style of Bronte.

I am trying to decide how I feel about this book. Who this book is for: people who love Jane Eyre and think about Rochester the way pop culture esteems Darcy. If that's your jam then this is for you. Shoemaker does so well all capturing the muted tone of Brontë I could have almost said that she wrote it herself. You get a complex view of Rochester that mirrors the source material well.

Arbol But I've never been interested in Rochester the man. I wasn't as interested after the first two sections of the book (that chronicled his childhood and adolescence) and while the complicated situation he was placed in added depth to his character it did nothing radical to the man or story itself. Which I am finding, as fond as I am of Jane, I want more from books that revisit old classics. I want a greater counter balance. (edited) 8y
