Cuckoo's Calling
Cuckoo's Calling | Robert Galbraith
A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel's suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, thelegendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this. Introducing Cormoran Strike, this is the acclaimed first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

My #library has more donations than we‘ll ever sell at our booksale and since we‘re going to be having an #alteredbook contest this summer, I made an example. Everything is made from the book, except the mini book covers, which I printed out, and the little paintings, which I printed out and glued onto some plastic buttons I had laying around. And since it‘s a Strike book, I was able to sneak my signature in it 🥸

Second time reading this after a number of years, thought I would read it again before I start watching the series. I rather enjoyed it as I did the first time and am looking forward to reading the entire Strike series.

This is pure dumb fun. I enjoyed reading the detailed descriptions of elite, wealthy settings. I also appreciated how the dialogue and conversation drove the story. Finally, the slow pace with which Robin and Strike‘s relationship develops is an added bonus. I‘ll be checking out the next book.

Listened to this for work book club. It was okay - I never connected with the victims & family and suspected the killer & motivation early on.

RobES The second and third book definitely get better 💛 2y

And so to bring me up-to-date on the #12BooksOf2022, this is another one that took me by surprise. I‘ve never read the Harry Potter series. I read The Casual Vacancy and though it was dreadful. So I stayed away from the Strike series. But after seeing so many people so excited for each new release, I decided to give the first a try. Since then, I‘ve binge-read most of the books series and binge-watched the TV series.

@Andrew65

Finally finished 'The Cuckoo's Calling'. It really won me over by the end and I will def be reading more Cormoran Strike novels! He and Robin were genuinely likeable characters! I'm getting stuck into 'The Silent Companion' by Laura Purcell. It's been on my tbr list for ages and it seems appropriately eerie for this month 👻🎃

If popular opinion demands I watch a movie or read a book, I tend to balk on principle. I‘m just newly returned to enjoying reading for pleasure and finding it difficult to stay focused on even good, engaging stories - but this one held me! I like good character development in imperfect characters. Here is the redemption story of a failing private investigator and the intellectual awakening of the temp who comes to work for him.

terryduncan5719 I enjoyed this book as well. But can you tell me why John hired Strike? He would've gotten away with it... 2y

This isn't a bad murder mystery but it's not a great one either. It wasn't a page turner for me. I put it down and then came back to it because I did want to find out who did it. There were some characters introduced that gave the appearance of having much more involvement but then just disappeared from the pages so that didn't leave a lot of guessing who the killer would be. JK Rowling's first venture into non-fantasy was OK and has potential.

I‘ve avoided reading the Strike series mainly because the author is so popular and I kind of steer away from things that seem overhyped, but after seeing a lot of people praising the series, I gave it a go, and I must say I‘m enjoying the series, though more for the relationship between Strike and Robin that the crime element.

StaceGhost I‘m totally in it for the romantic aspect too. The mysteries haven‘t captured me since troubled blood but goodness the tension 🥵 2y

I received this book for my birthday earlier this year from a friend, and I don't know why it's taken me so long to read it😅It was a very interesting murder mystery and I enjoyed the 'Sherlock Holmes' feel. Though a little slow and I did predict who the killer was, I enjoyed the events that played out, and especially liked the interaction between Strike and Robin. Overall it was a good book but could have been shorter.

Just finished this for my first ever #LMPBC!

Hmm I feel like this didn't quite hit the goal for a thrill read but the suspense was definitely present by the end.

I enjoy a good crime fiction every once in while and I was not disappointed by this at all. It kept me intrigued but it was a bit long. Which scares me because the next books in the series are even longer! 😳

Solid 4.25 star. Hope you like it too!

Coleen I was not completely sold on this first book of the series either. But each subsequent book gets better and better! 2y

Started this book for my first ever round of #LMPBC.

This book has been on my shelf for 2 years!
I love the drama of a criminal investigation book so i predict a 4 star read!

When troubled model Lula Landry falls to her death from a snow-covered Mayfair balcony, it is assumed that she has committed suicide. However, her brother has his doubts, and calls in private investigator Cormoran Strike to look into the case.

Finally reading this and though it was filled with gists but I do find it rather dry as it feels more like reading a textbook. I would think there were too much going on and somehow I got lost midway. Prob good for tv, I haven‘t watched it yet. I somehow guessed the killer so the ending was no surprise but it did drags on a little 😅

kwmg40 @Tamra @BarbaraBB Thank you! The dumplings are actually not that hard to make; they just take a lot of time. I'm discovering that similar techniques are used for all sorts of “filled things“: dumplings, ravioli, pierogis, empanadas, etc. 😀 3y
kwmg40 I should add that the real trick is to buy premade dumpling wrappers, which are inexpensive and commonly found in Asian grocery stores. My aunt used to make them from scratch but I have neither the patience nor her skill. 3y
