The Last Werewolf
The Last Werewolf | Glen Duncan
Then she opened her mouth to screamand recognised me. It was what Id been waiting for. She froze. She looked into my eyes. She said, Its you. Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but youd never suspect it. Nonstop sex and exercise will do that for youand a diet with lots of animal protein. Jake is a werewolf, and after the unfortunate and violent death of his one contemporary, he is now the last of his species. Although he is physically healthy, Jake is deeply distraught and lonely. Jakes depression has carried him to the point where he is actually contemplating suicideeven if it means terminating a legend thousands of years old. It would seem to be easy enough for him to end everything. But for very different reasons there are two dangerous groups pursuing him who will stop at nothing to keep him alive. Here is a powerful, definitive new version of the werewolf legendmesmerising and incredibly sexy. In Jake, Glen Duncan has given us a werewolf for the twenty-first centurya man whose deeds can only be described as monstrous but who is in some magical way deeply human. One of the most original, audacious, and terrifying novels in years. From the Hardcover edition.

2.2⭐️ I think I overhyped this one in my own mind because I was so disappointed at the end. While the concept of the story is intriguing, the execution is poorly done in my opinion. The story was super dry and I found it hard to connect with the character with how wordy the author was. Like he was trying to come off intelligent, but came off pretentious instead. this was my #bookspin for #bookspinbingo.

bthegood I felt the same way when I read it - 2y

I almost DNFed this one, and if I'd known the last ~1/4 would be written from a female point of view I would have. This particular author's voice speaking from the point of view of a woman gives me the creeps. The first 40% I quite enjoyed, but then the story shifts and is no longer interesting enough for me to put up with the frequent appearance of the "c" word for female anatomy. It becomes a damsel-in-distress tale, which isn't my thing.

ImperfectCJ My opinion of the book isn't helped by the fact that the author reminds me of a guy I knew in college and prefer never to think about. Weird how many authors lately are reminding me of guys I knew in college. 3y
StaceGhost I know that feel. How do they keep getting published? 3y
Megabooks Very relatable re: guys in college. Maybe when one hits a certain age? I know it didn‘t really happen until I hit 40 a couple of years ago. 3y
CuppaGabbage I gotta agree with you for sure. When he had Lu using phrases like "jerked off" and using "C" word I was kinda taken aback. Could tell he definitely didn't know how to make the transition of writing from a different characters perspective. 3y

For #Werewolf #Scarathlon #PhotoChallenge

Only book on my goodreads list for this theme, and tbh, I doubt I will ever get to it. Reviews by trusted readers do not make it appealing. So I included a sleepy Esther and her blue llama. #DogsofLitsy

Lindy I read it quite a while ago and remember enjoying it but not the details… something like: a werewolf with existential angst finds purpose in life? 3y
plemmdog I enjoyed I, Lucifer, but haven‘t read this one… 3y
Ruthiella This was interesting/fun but I didn‘t feel compelled to read the rest of the trilogy. 3y

This book had potential. Main character held my interest as did the plot, the idea of a last werewolf and how he handles that knowledge is intriguing. The authors writing took me out of the story , looking up words, rereading sentences. Yet when describing female anatomy the author resorted to the crudest language! I wanted to know how it ended, I will not move on to the next book in this series.

This book is pure filth! Not your average Werewolf+Vampire teen drama story, this book is very adult. I was willing to do the series, but have decided not to now, I just don't care enough about the characters.

I worked on this book for 5 months! I feel proud of myself that I didn't DNF it. The characters were lack luster and writing was just OK. I was not crazy about the plot either. ⭐⭐⭐

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I have been listening to this on CD and it's been dragging. I can only tolerate it in small doses. I really think it's time to just DNF this one at about 55%. 5y

❤️The Last Werewolf is not what I expected...Intelligent and literary.

❤️Jacob Tracy wasn't on my radar until a sale... who knew western supernatural fantasy was something I would love so much?

❤️Zebulon is so brilliant, morbid, funny, upsetting, and incredible, I may never get over him.

❤️ I know Achilles gets lots of love, but it's the best thing I have read in a long time and I can't stop talking about it.

Maike Achilles was sooooo good 😍 not my usual genre but I loved it 7y

At first I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is literary and has interesting character development, which was not something I expected from a werewolf novel. But, after the love interest came into the picture the writing started to feel more contrived than literary (not to mention the excessive discussion of buttholes). I'm excited to dig into my other library picks though!

I just finished audio-booking this one; maybe the tone was put in place by the reader. This book was so bleak and apathetic that I had a matching emotional response. The only points that weren't depressingly bleak, were unexpected manic phases of the main character. The book had several peaks and none of them were very compelling. At the end - no pay off and the acknowledgement that this book is just a prologue to book 2 in the series.
