I, Lucifer
I, Lucifer: Finally, the Other Side of the Story | Glen Duncan
15 posts | 35 read | 23 to read
The end is nigh and the Prince of Darkness has just been offered one hell of a deal: reentry into Heaven for eternityif he can live out a well-behaved life in a human body on earth. Its the ultimate case of trying without buying and, despite the limitations of the human body in question (previous owner one suicidally unsuccessful writer, Deelan Gunn), Luce seizes the opportunity to run riot through the realm of the senses. This is his chance to straighten the biblical record (Adam, its hinted, was a misguided variation on the Eve design), to celebrate his favorite achievements (everything from the Inquisition to Elton John), and, most important, to get Julia Roberts attached to his screenplay. But the experience of walking among us isnt what His Majesty expected: instead of teaching us what its like to be him, Lucifer finds himself understanding what its like to be us. By an author hailed by the Times Literary Supplement as one of Britains top twenty young novelists, I, Lucifer is a masterpiecestartlingly witty, original and beautifully written (Good Book Guide).

I just can‘t do it. 120 pages in and I cannot take the manic, ADD voice of the narrator any longer. At one point, he compares his train of thought and digressions to Russian nesting dolls, but only if there were infinite dolls. Exhausting. And while I really liked his recollections of biblical events, the current day stuff was less intriguing.

kgriffith That does sound exhausting! 6y
zezeki So sorry to hear you didn't like it. It is one of my favourites. 6y
Zelma @zezeki I can totally see how it would be loved, but it just wasn‘t for me. And I love that we can have so many different opinions here; keeps things interesting! 6y

I haven‘t had any time to be on Litsy lately and I miss you all so much! I am so super busy with my new job plus trying to keep up with balancing work and home and all that jazz. It‘s great and after an awful year, life is starting to swing up again, but I want to just spend time here too. Anyway, stealing a few minutes of this weird book and coffee before work this morning.

TrishB Hi 🙋‍♀️ hope you get some you time soon! 6y
PurpleyPumpkin Good to see you back! You sound super busy, but I hope it‘s in a good way. I find it challenging to spend time on Litsy too, but do what I can. Life, right? 6y

Zelma @TrishB @PurpleyPumpkin @Suet624 @JennyM @Reggie @CouronneDhiver thanks so much! I love you all and so miss my time here. I need to set aside some serious sit down time on Litsy this weekend. It just feels so wrong to hardly post and comment! But the good news Nd that positive life stuff is responsible. 😁 6y

Book 6 of #FreakyFriday from @zeljka
If Bedazzled is a screenplay about a snarky devil granting wishes, I Lucifer is about a snarky devil wishing to write a screenplay.
Funny book. 3 stars for me.

I'm really torn on this book. I loved the language, and the flashes of humor, but the plot was weak and the pacing was choppy. A mixed bag for me, for sure. Perhaps someone with a higher tolerance for philosophical patter and casual depravity would really love this book. I couldn't quite get there.

"...London's oven-baked asphalt and disreputable trees..." ? I'm loving the language of this book, but the story, such as it is... not so much. ?

"The truth is, Hell's okay. Most of the souls at my place just hang around smoking and drinking and chewing the fat. And there's *everything* to read." -- I think I'm going to like this book. ??

It's blasphemy if I cared about that stuff, but Lucifer has always been my favorite fictional character. I love him in all sorts of stuff, including, but not limited to the tagged book, Lucifer (tv show & comic), Supernatural, and Constantine (which is one of my favorite movies).

julesG Constantine is one of my favourite films, too. It's based on the graphic novel 8y

night_shift @julesG yeah, I know! I haven't read it yet :/ 8y

julesG @UnidragonFrag Oh, good, you knew. I didn't know until I stumbled across a cross reference in another book by Mike Carey. 8y
night_shift Really? Huh! Yeah, I read a lot of comics so I was aware of it, just haven't picked it up yet 😅 8y
night_shift @julesG 😳 i haven't noticed a reference in any of Mike Carey's stuff. I am lame. Also, above comment for you too just forgot to tag 😑 8y
julesG @UnidragonFrag I think it was in one of the Felix Castor novels. I have the UK editions, 8y
night_shift @julesG Haven't read Felix Castor anything 😱 8y

I found it pretty hard to wade through. I liked the flamboyant language, it seemed fitting for that of Lucifer's character, but sometimes it was just too laborious and I found myself losing the meaning of the sentence/paragraph. It jumped a LOT and I seemed to get muddled in the non-necessary side stories a bit too much. I was so eager to read this book, the premise was so appealing but it just didn't thrill me the way I anticipated and hoped.

I read this when it first released in 2007, and I loooooved it. I'm re-reading it now because I was in the mood for an old friend and I still loooooove it. Wry, snarky, philosophical, filthy and smart. Lucifer reigns as one of my favorites (forever!)

I really enjoyed this book, it's written like a memoir by Lucifer, who is talking directly to the reader about his current and past situations. Definitely recommend!
