Pickpick

Between a so-so and a pick. It was very interesting in places but very long winded in others. I like the science parts best and was meh on the popular culture. It gave me a new respect for Disney and that was surprising.
3/5 read for a social, cultural, and scientific history of the Coyote in America. Expect more stories than science

I‘ve had some cool coyote experiences recently, prompting me to read this, and I‘m so glad I did! It looks at the natural history of coyotes then the US history of the wretched way they‘ve been treated here. Thankfully we‘re largely kinder to them now! This is an excellent read about a uniquely American critter.

Prodigal Summer | Barbara Kingsolver
Mehso-so

I, too, lived in the woods and wondered about the coyotes. But it changed how I think about everything. A miracle lover from the sky wouldn't've understood. I expected some echo of what living in the woods does for, and to, oneself. Nah. Standard Harlequin romance script. The other threads weren't even interesting. The writing was OK. Some of the technical descriptions were lush and alive. Didn't have the psychological draw that Poisonwood did.

Who‘s read this? I‘m only 30 pages in but can‘t feel myself being into it. I‘ve read so many good reviews but I‘m not liking the writing so far. :/

Is it worth continuing?

Lcsmcat I think it is. But I like pretty much everything she‘s written. It‘s been years since I read this one but I remember it having a slow start. Maybe give it another 50 pages or so? 12mo
AlaSkaat @Lcsmcat I‘ve become way too critical of books in the past years. Especially the way they‘re written. One cringe moment or conversation and I want out! I‘ll give it a few more chapters and hopefully be dragged into it. It‘s the kind of story I would enjoy previously 12mo
Susanita She‘s hit or miss for me, but I enjoyed this one. Maybe wait to decide until you‘ve heard from all three women? 12mo

AlaSkaat @Susanita Good idea. It‘s the first woman I don‘t like very much. But I might be wrong about her! 12mo
BarbaraJean Like @Susanita —Kingsolver can be hit or miss for me. I find some of her novels too preachy/agenda-driven, and this was one of those for me! But I agree—give it 50 pages, or give yourself a chance to read all three women so you have a better sense of what‘s ahead. 12mo
Ruthiella Agree with @BarbaraJean 100% . I loved The Poisonwood Bible, but this one was too on the nose for me. It‘s like Kingsolver doesn‘t trust her reader to get her point, so she unnecessarily hammers it in aha and again. 12mo
AlaSkaat @BarbaraJean @Ruthiella that‘s exactly my feelings towards it. Like she‘s trying way too hard to make me understand how the women are/feel… I‘m gonna continue tonight and decide if it‘s for me (edited) 12mo

#litSolace #MidSummerSolace

This was a re-read for me, but it hit much differently in my 40‘s than it did in my 30‘s. I loved the three stories of women breaking the mold in Appalachia and how they came together at the end. I forgot how funny this book was too. Truly some laugh out loud moments.

Thanks for the motivation to re-read @AllDebooks

PaperbackPirate This is my favorite Kingsolver so far! A reread is a great idea, but I still need to read Demon Copperhead. 📚 1y
Bookwormjillk @PaperbackPirate I read Demon Copperhead a few months ago and loved that one too. 1y
AllDebooks I really enjoyed this. It's my favourite of hers so far. 1y

Yesterday‘s #LibraryBookHaul Picked up Nancy #8 for #NancyDrewBR & Doppelgänger which finally came in for May‘s #SheSaid I‘ve been trying to listen to the audiobook & think it will help to have both to finish since I got behind.

In the library bookstore I found a like-new copy of the tagged book for #Naturalitsy #MidsummerSolace #buddyread & a copy of 8 Bears for $2! (We read it for April‘s #LitSolace but I had to return it)
The ???approve!

TheBookHippie Ooo nice!!!! 1y
Librarybelle Yay!!! 1y
jenniferw88 I'm finding Doppelganger really interesting. I've nearly finished, and I think I'll have a book hangover from it! I'm definitely going to try to read her backlist. 1y
AllDebooks I loved Eight bears. As for Doppelganger, it's the best non-fiction book I've read this year. Klein just won the women's prize for non-fiction with it. Enjoy your #bookhaul 1y
