Knitlandia: A Knitter Sees the World | Clara Parkes
22 posts | 21 read | 46 to read
Knitting aficionado and notable artisan Clara Parkes delves into her storied travels with this inspiring and witty memoir on a creative life enriched by her adventures around the world. Building on the success of The Yarn Whisperer, Parkess rich personal essays invite readers and devoted crafters on excursions to be savored, from a guide who quickly comes to feel like a trusted confidante. In Knitlandia, she takes readers along on 17 of her most memorable journeys across the globe over the last 15 years, with stories spanning from the fjords of Iceland to a cozy yarn shop in Pariss 13th arrondissement. Also known for her PBS television appearances and hugely popular line of small-batch handcrafted yarns, Parkes weaves her personal blend of wisdom and humor into this eloquently down-to-earth guide that is part personal travel narrative and part cultural history, touching the heart of what it means to live creatively. Join Parkes as she ventures to locales both foreign and familiar in chapters like: Chasing a Legend in Taos Glass, Grass, and the Power of Place: Tacoma, Washington A Thing for Socks and a Very Big Plan: Portland, Oregon Autumn on the Hudson: The New York Sheep & Wool Festival Cashmere Dreams and British Breeds: A Last-Minute Visit to Edinburgh, Scotland Fans of travel writing, as well as knitters, crocheters, designers, and fiber artists alike, will enjoy the masterful narrative in these intimate tales from a life well crafted. Whether youve committed to exploring your own wanderlust or are an armchair traveler curled up in your coziest slippers, Knitlandia is sure to inspire laughter, tears, and maybe some travel plans of your own.

Haven't done nearly as much #dayoff reading as expected but I did finally finish the sweater I've been taking forever on (I developed some sort of mental block about it when I got to the sleeves). #knittersoflitsy

Instead of going out to yoga in the unseasonal cold, I‘m going to just sit, knit, and eat some comfort food. Dear Mother Nature, Stop it.

Attention all fiber hoarders.... this is a great book of short love stories. For wool. If you knit or crochet, you will surely enjoy the love of wool only we know. 5⭐️ because it was just perfect for what I needed.

A lovely little book of short stories, all related to knitting and wool. Yes, not for everyone, but, it is exactly what I am needing tonight. The past month has been rough and anxiety is over the top. This is the gentle hug of knitting I needed.

mcipher Sending more knitty hugs your way! Hope things are better soon. 6y

This looks as if I could enjoy it. Perusing the local library I found it. I want to get back to knitting. Maybe this will spark some action.

GingerAntics That does look interesting. I‘ve never been able to do more than basic knitting, but I‘m killer at crochet. 6y
BookofWords @GingerAntics me too! Well not killer maybe like a bruiser 6y
GingerAntics That‘s probably more accurate for me, as well. I just seem killer at crochet as compared to my knitting. lol 6y

Oh @heatherkaz ! I LOVE everything in my package! THANK YOU! All three books are right up my alley. ? The magnetic bookmarks are so pretty. And how you knew Ghiardelli and Lindor truffles are two of my favorite chocolates, I don't know! (My youngest screamed "chocolate!" once he saw my open package. ?)

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful #secretsantagoespostal #wintersolsticebookexchange gift!

#TBRtemptation post 4! In this memoir, knitting aficionado Parkes takes us on 17 journeys across the globe over the last 15 years, from Iceland's fjords to a Paris yarn shop. The popular PBS personality provides part travel narrative part cultural history in her essays. From socks in Portland, Oregon, to the NY Sheep & Wool Festival on the Hudson. If you like your crafts, this may be right up your alley. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

As one who is fairly new to knitting (within the last 3 years) I found this book to be eye opening and also quite inspired. Clara shares her knitting experiences and travels through sumptuous stories, rich with texture and mythical knitting personas. I was excited to hear the names of knitters I was familiar with along with new ones that I instantly followed on Instagram and I've added quite a few knitting "destinations" to my must visit knit list

"A funny thing happens when more than one knitter gathers in a public place. A solo knitter, presuming she is a woman, quickly fades into the backdrop like a potted palm or a quietly nursing mother. Asingle knitter is shorthand for "nothing to see here, move on.
But when knitters gather, we become incongruously conspicuous. We are a species that other people aren't used to seeing in flocks" - Anyone else knit and listen to audiobooks? #multitask

I am an avid knitter, but I haven't read very many books about knitting or by other knitters. This was a fun exploration of places and events that happen in the knitting world, and my list of events to someday attend just got a lot longer.

A nice read while I was spending a day traveling. Some of the events covered in the book are inaccessible to anyone other than fiber industry bigwigs (TNNA for example), so it's fun to read about them.

RealLifeReading How cute! I am not a knitter but that just looks so fun! 8y
affiknitty @RealLifeReading To really enjoy it, I think it helps to be the kind of knitter that reads a lot about knitting, is on Ravelry, listens to podcasts, etc. She does a fair amount of name dropping. 8y
