Stats: Modeling the World | David E. Bock, Paul F. Velleman, Richard D. De Veaux

KEY BENEFIT: By leading with practical data analysis and graphics, Stats: Modeling the World , Third Edition, engages students and gets them to do statistics and think statistically from the start. With the authors' signature Think, Show, Tell problem-solving method, students learn what we can find in data, why we find it interesting and how to report it to others. Instructors praise this text as clear and accessible, while students report that they actually enjoy reading the book while learning how to do statistics. Additional examples with updated data make this new edition even easier to read and use. EXPLORING AND UNDERSTANDING DATA; Stats Start Here; Data; Displaying and Describing Categorical Data; Displaying and Comparing Qualitative Data; Understanding and Comparing Distributions; The Standard Deviation as a Ruler and the Normal Model; EXPLORING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN VARIABLES; Scatterplots, Association, and Correlation; Linear Regression; Regression Wisdom; Re-expressing Data: Get it Straight!; GATHERING DATA; Understanding Randomness; Sample Surveys; Experiments and Observational Studies; RANDOMNESS AND PROBABILITY; From Randomness to Probability; Probability Rules!; Random Variables; Probability Models; FROM THE DATA AT HAND TO THE WORLD AT LARGE; Sampling Distribution Models; Confidence Intervals for Proportions; Testing Hypotheses About Proportions; More About Tests and Intervals; Comparing Two Proportions; LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD; Inferences about Means; Comparing Means; Paired Samples and Blocks; INFERENCE WHEN VARIABLES ARE RELATED; Comparing Counts; Inferences for Regression; Analysis of Variance (on DVD); Multiple Regression (on DVD) For all readers interested in introductory statistics.

I didn‘t set a number goal this year, & for those of you who pay attention to totals, I track children‘s books & graphic novels which I know many don‘t, so subtracting those would put my total closer to 140. I‘m MOST pleased that StoryGraph tells me 25% of my reading this year was nonfiction, & that 40% of my reading was content I owned (though next year I want to track just the books that have been on my physical shelves for a long time).

eeclayton Wow, congrats! 🎉 11mo

#thestorygraph added some new stats in - you can now see stats for your owned books exclusively. I don‘t actually have all of my owned books in #storygraph - but I‘m digging the fact that what I do have tracked shows I‘ve read 50% of what I own. It‘s a nice fantasy 😂😆🤣

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Ooh I'm gonna go check this out thanks for the tip! 2y

Eyelit @Tahlia_Reads_And_Knits you have to go to your owned books page (go to your profile and then click on your owned books link) and there should be a pie chart icon next to owned books title at top of page 😃 2y

#bookreport
I am drained from just finishing Know my Name, a powerful read.
The others were all great too, Heaven, My Home - second in the series, The Night Fire, Bosch still doing it and The Irish Princess - wonderful historical fiction from Chadwick as always.
Read 2/4 of original weekly forecast!

Cinfhen You stayed pretty much on course!!! How‘s the jet lag?? 5y

Oh yes Yoda - my May Reading Stats are indeed quite interesting!
I‘m on track with my Goodreadsgoal, but a bit behind with my #MountTBR challenge - I‘ve bought too many new books (what a surprise) and am again not reading many of my other books - only two MTBR books in May. We‘ll see what the next month brings. (Hopefully more reading time)

Are you all satisfied with your reading time/Stats in May?🤗

April was a weird reading month. I don‘t feel like I accomplished much. Mostly because I‘m trying hard to resist picking up another book besides Otherland. I‘m making progress, but it is slow going!

How‘s everyone doing on their #MountTBR?

I read 6 books total and I‘m counting 4 as TBRs. I‘m cheating, I suppose with A Wizard of Earthsea, because I‘ve read it before. But I‘ve been waiting forever till I could read it to my son, and we did it!

Birdsong28 On book 8/20 😀📚📖 7y
AnneCecilie 9/21 comes from my tbr, and is not a reread. May will be a stronger month for me with two buddy reads from my tbr. 7y
Pamwurtzler I read 2 from my TBR in April & just started another. 7y

Bostonmomx2 I keep trying to tackle my TBR but library books keeps happening. 7y
DivaDiane @AnneCecilie It‘s all good! Bonne chance! 7y

Being nerdy tonight, checking out my 2017 stats. All in all, a great year of reading. For 2018 I'd like to read more books from my own shelves, and increase the diversity of authors I choose, but in general I'm quite happy with how the past year broke down.

I just did a breakdown of my 2017 reads and thought I‘d share. It was a fantastic year! I finally (and reluctantly) tried my first audiobook in July, but found that I really like them. 🎧👏🏻 #yearendstats

Redwritinghood Nice! 👏👏👏👏 7y
Sills Wow this is impressive! 7y
merelybookish Good work! Audiobooks do help one read more, I think. 7y
See All 24 Comments
DocBrown I can‘t believe that with all the reading you do, you only recently picked up audio. I spent a lovely weekend with Nora Ephron, my all time favorite who thankfully narrated her own work — at least the most recent stuff. 7y
Eggs 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 7y
Kalalalatja What a year! And it is very impressive you read 37 audiobooks if you only started in June 😱👏😄 7y
Cortg Fantastic! I just started audiobooks a couple years ago. Most I really like but some disappoint. I‘m getting the hang of what types of books to listen to vs reading with my eyeballs. 7y
britt_brooke @merelybookish Definitely agree. Because I listen to an audiobook when I‘m doing laundry or at the gym, etc. 7y
britt_brooke @mdhughes72 I‘m one of those skeptics who always thought audio wasn‘t really reading ... UNTIL I finally tried it and got used to listening. Now I have to have one going for gym time, doing laundry, etc. I also read significantly less before Litsy, lol! 7y
britt_brooke @Cortg It definitely takes some getting used to. I started with memoirs I‘d already read in print, just to be sure I could properly pay attention. I mostly listen to nonfiction. I‘m also learning that narrators can make or break an audio book! 7y
britt_brooke @Redwritinghood @Sills @Eggs Thanks!! ☺️ I give lots of credit to Litsy. Before this awesome place, I read significantly less than I do now.. 7y
britt_brooke @Kalalalatja Thanks! ☺️ I pop on an audiobook pretty much anytime my sons aren‘t right in my face 😆 - doing never-ending laundry, cooking, exercising. I‘ve kind of become obsessed! 🤓 7y
melbeautyandbooks @britt_brooke - You are so right about the narrator! I use the sample feature on audible so I don‘t end up with someone I can‘t stand to listen to. 7y
britt_brooke @melbeautyandbooks I‘ve been using that now, too. Super helpful! So far, I know I‘m not a fan of Scott Brick. 7y
melbeautyandbooks @britt_brooke He is one that people love or hate. 7y
britt_brooke @melbeautyandbooks That‘s what I‘ve heard. 7y
4ravens I was reluctant to listen to audiobooks, but I'm now travelling a bit for work and often drive long distances on my own, so I think I need to give them a go 😊 7y
Reviewsbylola Nice! 7y
britt_brooke @4ravens I was very reluctant, but it‘s definitely worth a try. Especially if you can borrow through your library system. I borrow them from Overdrive all the time. I have an Audible account now, too, but it‘s $15/month. 7y
4ravens Thanks @britt_brooke I'll look into what the library has. I was thinking of getting the one month trial from audible 7y
britt_brooke @4ravens I did the one month trial with Audible then went to cancel and they gave me a deal to sign up for 3 months for 7.49/month. 😁 They roped me in! I think next month, I go to the reg $15/month, but I‘ve found it‘s worth it. 7y
4ravens @britt_brooke I signed up for overdrive and another service our library has but everything I want is on loan for months 😕 I can see audible in my future 😂 7y
britt_brooke @4ravens Oh no, lol! 7y

My #bookishresolution for 2017 is to continue working on reading more diversely and to continue reading more translations and nonfiction! I'm actually pretty happy with my 2016 stats and hoping to up my spreadsheet game to have more stats for next year 🤓 I'm pretty confident that Litsy will help me with these goals 😁
