Van Gogh's Ear
Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story | Bernadette Murphy
107845 posts | 630 read | 24 reading | 434 to read
BOOK OF THE WEEK ON BBC RADIO 4 PRIMETIME BBC2 DOCUMENTARY WITH JEREMY PAXMAN On a dark night in Provence in December 1888 Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear. It is an act that has come to define him. Yet for more than a century biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened that night have been left with more questions than answers. In Van Goghs Ear Bernadette Murphy sets out to discover exactly what happened that night in Arles. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious Rachel to whom he presented his macabre gift? Was it just his lobe, or did Van Gogh really cut off his entire ear? Her investigation takes us from major museums to the dusty contents of forgotten archives, vividly reconstructing the world in which Van Gogh moved the madams and prostitutes, caf patrons and police inspectors, his beloved brother Theo and his fellow artist and house-guest Paul Gauguin. With exclusive revelations and new research about the ear and about Rachel, Bernadette Murphy proposes a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Goghs heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep that fateful night. Van Goghs Ear is a compelling detective story and a journey of discovery. It is also a portrait of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged towards madness and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.

Thank you to everyone that gave their feedback on #QueerBC It's been really useful reading it all

I'm going to include more information about the authors and more reminders of the monthly authors. It's easy to lose track when everything is a month in advance.

There were several requests for an end of month discussion or check in post. How you enjoyed the author etc.

⬇️

PuddleJumper 1. I don't have the time to do this and often I don't read the authors until several months later so can't really contribute.

Would anyone want to take this on? Or we could rotate it each month.
31m
PuddleJumper 2. You'd just need to make a post and I can share the tag list with you. Feel free to format it however you want.

If interested email me at eommods@gmail.com

PuddleJumper 3. Thanks again to everyone! I'm really enjoying this book club and I'm so happy other people are enjoying it too.

Looking forward to another awesome year of discovering new authors and books!

Trying something different (again) for my quarterly bingo. I‘ve found I‘ve become a mood reader of late. I‘m five or more pages into about nine books right now. 😅 All are good, all have my interest, but none are the winner of my full attention. So instead of being hyper focused on what I need to read to get a bingo, I‘m leaving it to chance. ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Every time I finish ANY book, I spin my nifty wheel app and assign it a number and it immediately goes on the board. Bingo will be achieved 100% by chance. 😅 6h

My #ReadYourKindle List for April!

Thanks, @CBee, for running this challenge!

rubyslippersreads I really like this idea of choosing by genre instead of specific book. I may try it for April. 8h
Coffeymuse @rubyslippersreads I have my Kindle books in folders by genre for the most part unless it's a Christmas book or a KU/First Pick. Makes it easy to pick out something that looks interesting in that folder! 7h

Hello My Lovely Littens. Happy 1st of April and #StartASpark day. Today we will be talking about adaptations. I love finding out that something I have watched/ am watching has been written in book form. I try to make note of it so I can go look into later. These 6 books were turned into tv shows. I tried to find ones that aren't talked about a lot.

What are some of your favorite show adaptations? What do you wish was turned into a show?

There were so many positive comments left on my post last night that I think it‘s worth making this official.

This is very low key—no tag list, so feel free to participate how often you would like. I am reading one nonfiction a month that looks beyond the history found in schools.

If you would like to participate, post your book and thoughts each month, using #RealHistory and/or #HonestHistory . I‘ll make a bibliography for those interested.

Spring is here, and you know what that means... A new issue of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉!

💥 The long-running, hand-made, anti-authoritarian journal is back with Issue 127, and you do not want to miss it!

UnderworldAmusements 💥 This issue of 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉! contains predictions of the future, a look into saucer study projects, the banality of office work, book reviews, letters from readers, and so much more. 2d
UnderworldAmusements 💥 Published since 1969, and spearheaded by “anarchist without adjectives“ Fred Woodworth, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉! exists solely to criticize authoritarian society and religion in order to argue for the many humane advantages of freedom and rationality. And for you luddites still inexplicably on social media, no computers have ever been used in the history of its publication. That's right, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉! is still 100% handmade! 2d

Looking for recommendations for true crime audiobooks and podcasts!! TIA!

ShelleyBooksie I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara - was so good I had to dnf - creepy as heck. 2d
shortsarahrose Admittedly I read this as a physical book, so I can‘t speak to it as an audiobook. And it‘s only sort of a true crime book. But I really enjoyed it. 2d

Zuhkeeyah I love the RedHanded podcast. Two ladies cover crimes all over the world. Books: Raised by a serial killer, under the bridge, and Sleepers 2d
Zuhkeeyah I second @lil1inblue on the S-town recommendation 2d
ChaoticMissAdventures There is a podcast about Woody Harrelson's dad that I found fascinating - Son Of A Hitman I found it on Spotify 2d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @ShelleyBooksie 😱😱 I‘ve heard it‘s good! 2d
