Van Gogh's Ear
Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story | Bernadette Murphy
107555 posts | 629 read | 24 reading | 435 to read
BOOK OF THE WEEK ON BBC RADIO 4 PRIMETIME BBC2 DOCUMENTARY WITH JEREMY PAXMAN On a dark night in Provence in December 1888 Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear. It is an act that has come to define him. Yet for more than a century biographers and historians seeking definitive facts about what happened that night have been left with more questions than answers. In Van Goghs Ear Bernadette Murphy sets out to discover exactly what happened that night in Arles. Why would an artist at the height of his powers commit such a brutal act? Who was the mysterious Rachel to whom he presented his macabre gift? Was it just his lobe, or did Van Gogh really cut off his entire ear? Her investigation takes us from major museums to the dusty contents of forgotten archives, vividly reconstructing the world in which Van Gogh moved the madams and prostitutes, caf patrons and police inspectors, his beloved brother Theo and his fellow artist and house-guest Paul Gauguin. With exclusive revelations and new research about the ear and about Rachel, Bernadette Murphy proposes a bold new hypothesis about what was occurring in Van Goghs heart and mind as he made a mysterious delivery to her doorstep that fateful night. Van Goghs Ear is a compelling detective story and a journey of discovery. It is also a portrait of a painter creating his most iconic and revolutionary work, pushing himself ever closer to greatness even as he edged towards madness and one fateful sweep of the blade that would resonate through the ages.

Translation: Tinder. Attacks, inroads, remains

Ever since I've hit my teens, my parents told me to read Meienberg. Now I've adopted this book from my mum and so she finally made it possible for me to read something by Meienberg.

And I totally see both my parents in these texts. Essays that are anti-war, pro humanism and really cynical. My dad met Meienberg in Zurich once and had a couple of beers with him. I'm not surprised they got along.

Progress so far on my 2025 Title challenge. Just finishing Icebound. Don't have any books with a J or a K, so I will have to come back to them later in the year when I hopefully find them. Had Four Ruined Realms on F, but moved it to the Number slot for now. Trying to do it going down the ABCs, with special exceptions on books I really want to read, such as Onyx Storm and Sanctum of the Soul.

Really bad writing can sometimes be amusing in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 way, but a bad story really annoys me.

I‘ll bail in a heartbeat if the story is so bad that I don‘t even care what happens.

Another heartfelt story by one of my favorite authors. Alison Ragsdale captures your heart with her stories. They are always so realistic that I wonder if she has lived it or knows someone who has. Her books always make me shed tons of tears.

My library checkouts for today. I told myself I was going to go inside, turn in one book, and not check out anything else…that didn‘t work! I‘m currently on a stack of five other books, one of those titles I just started today. The two graphic novels on the bottom of the stack shown here, I have no idea what they are about… But they‘ve just now become available again, and the art intrigues me. Black Phillip vibes!

Got a #bookspinbingo at the 11th hour last night. I‘ll be spending the rest of today on the couch reading toward March‘s books because I ran a 10 mile trail run this morning with 1500 feet of elevation (which probably means nothing to most of you but it was *hard*—and beautiful and made me feel super accomplished but I may not walk again for days!). 1. My boys…always!
2. Medications. Between Xander and Zeke, I have a small pet pharmacy at my house.
3. Vet care. I visited the vet 3 times this week (Xander twice and Zeke once). They cut me a break with the most recent visit. And, my vet truly cares.
4. My parents. They brought me a meal and have helped me pick up medications and cover the costs of one of the visits.
5. Litsy. It has been my saving grace this week.

Librarybelle #RantTime In some ways, I feel like a narcissist, as I tend to focus on my personal woes rather than the troubles going on globally. This week was the case, and I was horrified when I finally caught up on the news. I‘m sorry, but a bully session in the White House is not “good television.” And really, should good television even be made in the Oval Office. While I am absolutely scared over Xander‘s blood results, which indicated a value of the ⬇️ 2d
Librarybelle ⬆️ white blood cell count to be low and may be something as simple as an infection (and thus his abrupt dissent into illness) or something like an autoimmune disease or cancer, I am just as horrified as so many rights are stripped away and the false claims of the evils of vaccinations are spread like wildfire. You cannot change facts. You just cannot. Science is not political. End of story. There‘s a lot more I could say, ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 2d
Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ but I think lack of sleep has cut into my usual reserve on posting my thoughts. I‘ll just end with this: History repeats itself. End of rant. 2d

CBee @Librarybelle I‘ve ventured back into the news a bit this last week or two as well. I agree with you 100% and am absolutely horrified. So very sorry you‘ve been dealing with kitty illnesses as well ♥️ 2d

Aims42 With you 💯 on the news and the shameful visit at the Oval Office. What an embarrassment to the US 😖 This is not how our allies should be treated. And stupid Vance, “have you ever said thank you?” What a gaslighting thing to say!? UGH. Okay, I have to be done because there is so much to be said but you said it best: History repeats itself. Glad your kitties are getting the help they need, and so are you! 💛🧡🩷 2d

Female authors for the TBR 🔥🔥🔥🔥💕💕💕💕

Billypar Great video & picks! It's funny, today I stumbled on a decade-old email I sent to my aunt with a list of recent books I read and ratings. Probably 90% male authors. And lots of the same ones over and over that I read in college or were likely on the white-male dominated best of lists from the early 2000s. What a difference a decade (and Litsy) makes, lol. 2d
