Yes, hope is battered and bruised because she's always the last one standing. Never, ever, bloody ever give up.
Given the state of the world we live in now and what's to come, I've decided that my reading theme for 2025 will be politics and current affairs. I aim to be more informed, more politically active on a local, national and global front, supporting communities and holding true to my firm belief of a fair, equal and just society for all.

Bookwormjillk I love this. I look forward to your reviews. I tried to read about global warming this year and want to continue next year. 1mo
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk having an annual theme really helps focus my reading and learning. I can't say enjoy your deep dive into global warming as it is such a worrying subject. Make sure you balance it out with stories of hope like rewilding and regeneration 🙂 1mo

psalva I‘ve got few words in this moment, so all I can say is I‘m with you. 1mo
Librarybelle ❤️❤️❤️ 1mo
Megabooks I've read more books about politics and political history this year than I have in years (maybe since my poll sci degree). I've also done a deep dive into ex-vangelicals. As much as I want to put my head in the sands at times, I'm glad to have spent this year engaged and learning. Like you, I hope to continue it into the future. Excited to see what you read! 1mo
BarbaraJean Yesssss. I posted a poem yesterday that has this same perspective on hope—it‘s called “Hope Is Not a Bird, Emily, It‘s a Sewer Rat” by Caitlin Seida. That‘s the kind of hope I need right now. Tough and tenacious. (edited) 1mo
kspenmoll Thank you for this.💛 1mo
AllDebooks @Megabooks I've checked my Kindle sociopolitical folder and there's almost 150 titles I've accumulated without realising. Do you have any recommendations? 1mo
AllDebooks @BarbaraJean ❤️ I'll check out the poem. 1mo
Bookwormjillk @AllDebooks yes balance is the key. I also want to read more about social media and how it‘s influencing people. 1mo
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk that's on my list, too. When I've finished it, I'll post a document link to my planned reading. Happy for anyone to join me. I'll be using it for my #Roll100 2025 list @PuddleJumper 1mo
Megabooks Foreign Agents and The Wolves of K Street were released this year and give a good overview of lobbying by outside and inside forces. The Kingdom, The Power, and The Glory by Tim Alberta is one of the best books I've read about Christian Nationalism. Homegrown by Jeffery Toobin about McVeigh was interesting from a historical perspective. The Undocumented Americans is great. The Color of Law is a great look at redlining. 1mo
Megabooks Autocracy Inc. is a short but powerful look at networks of dictators around the globe. Red and Blue by Kornacki is a good look at the 1990s origins of modern political tribalism. They Came for Our Schools is an interesting look at school censorship and how it affects teachers and students. The Quiet Damage about QAnon and the families it affects was fascinating and sad. Fancy Bear Goes Fishing explores Russian cybercrimes. 1mo
Megabooks Jesus and John Wayne is another good perspective on the history of Christian Nationalism. I hope you find a couple of these interesting!! 1mo

#poetrymatters Aug 13: popular

And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou is a popular poem.

Born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, Angelou had a broad career as a singer, dancer, actress, composer, and Hollywood‘s first female black director, but became most famous as a writer, editor, essayist, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist.

MidnightBookGirl This poem will never not make my soul tingle! 4y

I ❤️ Maya Angelou!!

P.S., the poem Phenomenal Woman is not in this poetry book. But that‘s how I think of her, think of each of us, representing the different shapes and shades of wisdom, strength, beauty and love, phenomenally.

#poetrymatters - March 8: laugh

In celebration of International Women‘s Day, I chose Maya Angelou, who was not on a poet but a pioneer, educator, a civil rights activist.

This is an excerpt from Still I Rise. The full poem: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/46446/still-i-rise

Caged Bird
By Maya Angelou

“The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Life Doesn‘t Frighten Me
By Maya Angelou

“Shadows on the wall
Noises down the hall
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all
Bad dogs barking loud
Big ghosts in a cloud
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all.

I go boo
Make them shoo
I make fun
Way they run
I won‘t cry
So they fly
I just smile
They go wild
Life doesn‘t frighten me at all.”

Still I Rise
By Maya Angelou

“You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still like dust, I‘ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I‘ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.”

Phenomenal Woman
By Maya Angelou

“Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I‘m not cute or built to suit a fashion model‘s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I‘m telling lies.
I say,
It‘s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I‘m a woman
Phenomenally,
Phenomenal woman,
That‘s me.”

I rarely read poetry. I feel like it's impossible for me to get into. After seeing Netflix documentery about Maya Angelou I was so impressed by her that I wanted to try to read her poetry. I read the whole book but even though it was pleasant I didn't really get it. I think I'll try poetry again after a few years. Maybe it gets easier in time. 🤔

TrishB I think maybe you either like poetry or you don‘t 🤷‍♀️ or maybe just haven‘t found the poems for you yet! 6y
Martta @TrishB That might be. I just loved Spoon river antology when I read it! It's categorized as poetry but is very different from traditional poetry. I think I need to search around that if I could find something similar. That might be my kind of poetry. 😊 6y
TrishB That does seem to have a lot of love - I‘m not that familiar with it myself! 6y
Martta @TrishB You should really try it if you get a chance! It's truly awesome! 😊 6y

Nice work at my alma mater. Proud of them. (I mentioned this to my husband and he snorted and said "were they triggered by it?" and I think I'm gonna file for divorce)

quietlycuriouskate That Kipling poem gets me riled up every time: of all the self-satisfied, complacent claptrap! I even wrote a rebuttal poem a few years back. 6y
Burghbookaddict My fiance says stuff like that occasionally, too. He's gotten better though since I started giving him a talking to every time he does though. It's probably more because he doesn't want to listen to me than because he realizes why he's wrong, but either way it shuts him up so mission accomplished lol. 6y
Hollie Good for them! 6y
Weaponxgirl I saw this last night and thought it was great! I hate the argument that some said on the news about how it's white washing history. Firstly history was already white washed and secondly no one is saying you can't or shouldn't read Kipling it's more about expanding the canon and seeing how history affected others too. 6y
arlenefinnigan @Weaponxgirl yeah the guy they have in that article saying "well Dickens was a racist, are they saying we shouldn't read Dickens?" - they're not saying you shouldn't read Kipling. They're saying they don't want one of his poems on a 7ft high mural at the Student Union entrance as a statement of their values. 6y

I'm trying to read poems.
Not succeeding that well.
How could I get under the poem spell?
What is the secret they hide so well?
Why can't they just come out of their shell?
Do you have any tips for me to tell?
🤔

LiteraryinPA I‘m not super into poetry, but I really enjoy Billy Collins. His poetry is very accessible and full of images and ideas that seem familiar to me, as if I thought of them myself but never thought to write them down! 7y

And Still I Rise | Maya Angelou
post image

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

from Caged Bird by Maya Angelou - powerful! #LitsyPoetry365
